Breakdown In Civil Order

Then she said that the criminal-justice system often fails victims of sexual assault....

She cites the statistic that 80% of sexual assaults are by someone that the victim knows, and that 80% of sexual assaults are never reported to the criminal-justice system. She then says that an assault victim has to decide whether or not to tear their family apart, to suffer the extra trauma of turning in a father or an uncle or a boyfriend or whoever.

Jon Krakauer is a great writer of non-fiction. So when I saw his Missoula in a used book store recently I bought it without even checking to see what it was about! It is a detailed look at college rape scandals in Missoula, Montana, apparently typical of how college rapes are handled across the country. The victims who sought prosecution of their rapists were often victimized again for their efforts.
Given that right-wingers don't howl in outrage at that, it's evident that they believe in being soft on this sort of crime.

Or the January 6 attacks. I haven't seen right-wingers howl with rage over the attackers and what they did. I've even seen right-wingers like Marjorie Taylor Greene championing them as martyrs, as if these are criminals that ought to be coddled.

I think pro-police have two takes on cops, one in general... and one when they get pulled over for speeding.

Because those were bad cops, defending the bad people. That these people have no consistency in their positions is part of the problem!

AOC describes it as working by persuading victims of violence not to seek revenge,
The purpose of the state’s monopoly on violence is that victims do not have to take revenge; the state does that for them. The state catches, prosecutes, and punishes. Seeking to persuade victims not to report crimes or to press charges is cruelty to the victim. A policy that is soft on offenders simply creates more victims.
Hurting people to teach that hurting people is wrong. Makes perfect sense.

WARNING: Frivolous exchanges in a thread on such a sober somber topic may be relegated to the Elsewhere disposal.

As for my personal stance — here I separate myself from the sacred duties of a Super-Mod — I'd be hypocritical to argue against useful insults. I myself over-indulge in that alleged variety.

This is a thread on the Breakdown in Civil Order, so that really feels on-topic. :D

Of course, the problem then becomes who is the judge of whether an insult is "useful", and  Quis custodiet ipsos custodes.

Quiche and custard, eaten with the same custard. It's a fancy French cuisine that fuses savoury with sweet.

Probably.

;)

Nope, no breakdown in civil order. Things are just like they have always been.

CNN —

A teen and an adult were killed in a shooting at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School in St. Louis on Monday morning, police Commissioner Michael Sack said.

Police located the shooter, and he was shot during an exchange of gunfire, he said. He was later pronounced dead, Sack said. Police previously said the gunman was in custody.

Authorities did not immediately identify the victims or the shooter, but Sack said during a news conference those slain were a woman who was pronounced dead at a hospital and a teen girl who was killed at the scene. The shooter was a man who appeared to be about 20 years old, he said.

Six other victims were transported to a hospital, authorities said. The commissioner said: “They suffered a variety of injuries from shrapnel injuries to gunshots.”

Which year are you thinking of, when nobody was shot at an educational institution in the USA?

Your post looks to me exactly like evidence that "Things are just like they have always been".

Come on. This didn't even rise to the level of mass shooting. This is nothing in the NRA's Utopian paradise.

What should be done about this?

The term "breakdown" means something. When a car "breaks down", it isn't still running.

Certainly random school violence is something that is newer. My daughter and all other children in schools today have to practice active shooters drills. I didn't need to do that. Didn't need to duck and cover either. I was in the sweet spot for places not likely to die in.

A breakdown, however, implies that riots are common not happen every once in a while. Riots have been a thing for a bit.

In the news this morning. At a ballot drop box armed MAGA types were harassing people dropping off votes.

In the recent past two 18 year olds got into a dispute over a reported $36 pot buy. One drew a gun and started shooting killing someone in a parked car. Yesterday a nearby armed robbery of a video game store. Stealing video games at gunpoint by what looked lie a teen or yiung adult in the surveillance video.

Around here the new normal.

In Seattle it was not just a riot, it was an out of control mob lasting for months. Allegedly protesting black treatment I watched the black mob walk into Chinatown attacking minority Asian business.

and started shooting killing a bystander in a parked car. If we go back to Chicago and NYC ad the days of Al Capone it is nothing new, right?

Jimmy is sounding like the democrats on the border. According to Harris there is no problem at the border, it is 'secure'.

The left has a particular gift for tunnel vision and selective morality.

In the CHOP zaone an area in Seattle declared off limits to police there wrer assualts, murder, rape and suression of any one speaking aginst it. Yet our last progressive mayor compared it to the Summer Of Love in SF.

As she put there was food, music, and street art. Sh likened it to festval. It was not a festval to ocal residents who were assaulted.

All zealots have a particular gift for tunnel vision and selective morality. Your post below is a perfect example of it.

In zones that are on limits to police, there are assaults, murder and rape (as you persistently point out) and suppression of speech. People can be real assholes regardless of their political or ideological viewpoints. Yet for some reason, you seem only to be aware of "the left" with your increasingly rightwing screeds.

He lives in Seattle. The looniness of the left is quite strong there. The one conservative is moving to Boise next month.

I think he's just acting like a snowflake.

The California "homeless" problem just keeps getting worse. The insufferable prick, Governor Newsom is bombarding us with campaign ads on TV and other media about how the state of California is the fourth biggest economy in the world. "Homelessness" has in fact increased despite the prick's assurances it is a top priority and taxing the shit out of us to address the problem.

Meanwhile in the City of Angels;

Images and video show homeless in Los Angeles syphoning water and power in camps sprouting throughout the city's streets - with some of the brazen encampments even boasting working washing machines. Sagging tents, rusting RVs, and makeshift structures have become commonplace along Hollywood Boulevard to Venice Beach - and even in the shadow of City Hall. Over the past year, the camps have become increasingly bold, putting up full-sized tents and cordoning off entire streets, much to the chagrin of outraged locals. Now, citizens have snapped evidence that the urban outposts are stealing water and power from the city to maintain a surprisingly lavish lifestyle while living out on the street, taking water from hydrants and electricity from any outlet they come across.
