Sen. Dianne Feinstein's Deterioration

Re: McConnell’s glitches. It seems that they may very well be a consequence of a concussion he suffered during a fall some while ago.
One thing noted by Gupta on CNN was that McConnell grabbed the podium during his freeze. Kind of like it is the only thing he can ponder and his head is all fuzzy, so he grabs the podium to remain steady. Concussion was 6 months ago, it must have been a doozy of an impact.

The only question I'm pondering about is if this is happening often (as we can tell by the reaction of his staffers) why isn't he using a cane.

Or a walker. Or a walker made to look like a podium. That would be soothing for him. Regardless, we can't be having this dude going all blue screen of death up there. This is only what we've seen in public. I'm sure it's happened other times out of the public view. Could you imagine walking into the restroom and seeing that?

United States Senate election in California, 2024 - Ballotpedia - I count 31 candidates.

RealClearPolitics - Election 2024 - California Senate - Open Primary
Polling Data, Poll Date, Schiff (D), Porter (D), Lee (D), Bradley (R), Garvey (R), Early (R), Reese (D), Liew (R), Reiss (R), Ferreira (I), Spread
LA Times 8/24 - 8/29 20 17 7 7 7 5 1 -- -- -- Schiff +3
PPIC 6/7 - 6/29 16 19 13 6 -- 7 -- 5 4 3 Porter +3
Emerson 6/4 - 6/7 15 14 6 4 -- 3 -- -- 1 1 Schiff +1
LA Times 5/17 - 5/22 14 17 9 -- -- 18 -- -- -- -- Early +1
So Adam Schiff and Katie Porter continue to be neck-and-neck, with Barbara Lee behind them. The Republicans continue to be divided, giving a good chance of two Democrats advancing to the general election. With these poll numbers, it's likely to be AS and KP.

The Let's Talk Elections podcaster mentioned endorsements, and I checked on  2024 United States Senate election in California

I found that BL has 108 endorsements, KP 20, and AS 61.

Looking at Congresspeople who endorsed them, BL has 20 endorsements, KP 1, and AS 29.

BL's are nationwide, including progressives like Jamaal Bowman, Pramila Jayapal, Ro Khanna, Ilhan Omar, Mark Pocan, Ayanna Pressley, and Jan Schakowsky.

KP has only Senator Elizabeth Warren.

AS has only Californians.

AS's endorsers trend somewhat more conservative than BL's. From govtrack.us for 2022, the quartiles of their ideology scores:

BL: {0.0315083, 0.0607469, 0.125973, 0.168639, 0.260614}
AS: {0.0802334, 0.146851, 0.163811, 0.222059, 0.292508}

Mann-Whitney test score: 0.00861102 -- the difference between the two datasets is statistically significant.

This candidate has very odd spellings with no hint about them. She seems Southeast Asian, but that's about it.

If you read through her X feed, it becomes pretty rapidly clear what her prioirities are: she's running to oppose the rapid escalation of the "cold" war between the US and China. Why a Vietnamese-American candidate would be freaked out about the idea of renewed warfare breaking out across maritime Southeast Asia should be obvious enough. Single issue candidates like this are often found on our ballots, probably expecting not so much that they will win as hoping that their candidacy will result in greater awareness of the issue they are on about.

Her website looks like she is running in 1994, not 2024.
Also, she can't spell. "Enformation"? LMAO.

What even is this word salad?

I didn't say I was voting for her. But it's not that difficult to see what she's generally on about. Pretending you're too dumb to deduce the meaning of a slightly garbled or mispelled sentence just because a Vietnamese woman wrote it is just silly, and doesn't really give the impression that your command of the language is much better than hers.

Found some more on that odd candidate.

Seems like English isn't her first language.

That her word salad is "generally" decipherable is not the issue here. The issue is that someone with this level of command of not just written language, but also ability to compose coherent thoughts, should not be anywhere near Congress. Or the office of the dogcatcher for that matter.

It wasn't "slightly" misspelled or garbled. "Slightly" misspelling is when, for example, you misspell "misspelled" as "mispelled". Slightly garbled is when somebody rearranges their thoughts but neglects to edit the sentences properly. That too happens on here.
This woman is on a whole another level. So much so that she might be pulling a Poe. Her being of Vietnamese descent is not an excuse in any case.

And yes, I take issue with your claim. My command of English language is much better than hers.

From recent elections, it seems to me that incoherence is now helpful in gaining office. So I don’t understand the problem unless it has something to do with an immigrant woman of color running.

Not even the most stupid Congresscritters on either side of the aisle are quite this incoherent.

Ah, it would not be ld without playing the race card.

Besides, this is her photo. Doesn't seem to be much "color" there.

However, judging by her facial expression, she might be trolling us all ...

And indeed, she will not be. There are always a few oddities on the ballot.

That looks like the English of someone who learned it as an adult.

Seems like English isn't her first language.
It goes well beyond that. English is not my first language either.
Either she has some neurocognitive issues or else she is pulling a Poe.
I see no indication of mental issues. The basic problem is that there are two aspects to learning a language:

1) Learning to map new sounds onto existing concepts.

2) Learning new concepts--either language structure or cases where their native language has one word and the new language has more than one.

The latter is much harder than the former and when the new concept lacks a consistent mapping it's nearly impossible for an adult to be reliable about it. This is why speakers of Chinese and some other Asian languages are notorious for mixing up gender--"he" and "she" are not separate concepts to them and they are not consistent with what other words are used. (Consider another pair from Chinese: open/turn on are one word. But any given object is either opened or turned on, a consistent pairing exists. That person over there, however, could be "he" or "she", there is no pairing between "over there" and gender.)

The same thing happens to us when we learn a language with more divisions than we have.

It didn't stop Helms or Thurmond from serving 1 and 3 more terms, respectively.

Newsom will be in a rush to appoint someone. Schumer has less than roughly 12 months get some judges approved and now having a constant presence in the seat she was occupying will make a big difference and McConnell likely can't block that anywhere as easily as they could prevent someone tag teaming with her with the seat.

It was a bit of shock when I saw the news this morning about Feinstein. Not unexpected though. She did a good a job as one could expect, especially when you look at all the knuckleheads currently occupying the Capitol. And she managed to keep her nose clean, for the most part. RIP, Dianne Feinstein.

Apparently Gavin has said he is going to appoint a black woman to finish out her term. What is the deal with appointing black women to high positions these days? Biden did the same thing for the VP and Supreme Court spots (and his press secretary too, KJP, but I'm not sure if he declared he was actively seeking a black woman for that). Are black women at the top of the progressive stack now, and if so, how did they get there? Why focus on another black woman, as opposed to say an Asian woman (or man) or maybe a Hispanic gay guy. Or <danger...crazy talk ahead> appoint someone qualified for the job without regard to their race, gender or sexual orientation. Like that MLK guy used to say.

Might be the historical / contemporary lack of black women in positions in power.

On hand, it seems like a specific group that is a tad bit unrepresented. On the other hand, black women vote for Democrats at absurdly high levels. So it would be politically pragmatic to recognize a group of people that overwhelmingly support your candidacies.
