Which movie did you watch today and how would you rate it?

The best new movie I have seen in quite some time. Magic on film. It would ruin it to give any kind of synopsis, but there will certainly be plenty of analysis in years to come, and nearly every frame is something you could put on a wall.
 
Leave The World Behind, 2/10; Streaming on Netflix stars Ethan Hawke and Julia Roberts (Kevin Bacon is in it somewhere) in some sort of supernatural mystery horror. I'm not sure because I bailed after about 30minutes. The movie runs just over two hours and if you can stick it out, well done. Family of three takes a vacation and rents a fancy property. They are on the beach and suddenly things start to go a bit haywire. A huge ship rounds aground on the beach. A bit weird. Then the internet and phones are not working. Then the owner of the rental property and his daughter show up looking for shelter during these strange events. Family is very suspicious but relents and gives them shelter. Subtle backbiting from the daughter unnerves family. The film gets horrible reviews so I don't think it's just me.

I think I reviewed this once before but I've just watched it again so...

The Invisible Man 2020

I really like this horror thriller. 8/10

A woman is in an abusive relationship with a famous tech genius. One night, she finally escapes from his well protected compound.

After it is reported her ex killed himself, she starts experiencing weird happenings around her and finally ends up being placed in a mental health lockdown facility where the whole thing comes to a culmination... maybe.

The suspence is palpable and the final plot twist is so satisfying.

Yeah, I really like the movie.

I didn't think it was that bad. It certainly wasn't great, but I watched all of it and wasn't upset that I'd done so. I do get what you mean by the first half hour or so though. I groaned several times and almost shut it off, but I hung in there and it did get better.

Again, it's not great, it's okay.

I don't know how to rate this one. Probably the best line that describes the movie is "It's about infinity... and I don't know what else."

At times it's an interesting watch. There are definitely several themes throughout that the film does a good job with and it's visually beautiful. The actors do a good job, but the cadence of the dialogue they're all forced to speak in nearly the entire time is tedious and eye rolling. Sometimes it works to humorous effect, but by half an hour into the film it loses its impact to the point where everyone is just droning. There are a couple of exceptions to this, but it's only one character; and a couple of others break the monotony briefly at times.

I'll give it a recommend because it's different and well made. Some people will hate it, some will be indifferent, some will love it. Whatever the case, it's understandable for anyone to feel any way about this movie.

I gave it 50 minutes. It started off promisingly enough even though it elicited some groans here and there, but it soon collapsed under its own stupid weight and became completely unwatchable.

Zack Snyder did a good remake of Dawn of the Dead. 300 was entertaining on first watch. Watchmen was was pretty cool. By and large though, he puts out visually distinct, but uniquely stupid movies. Army of the Dead was especially bad. It was as if he set out to offend anyone with an IQ above room temperature.

Anyway, I can't give this flashy turd a recommend.
 
I hated Asteroid City and Life Aquatic.
To me awkward is just awkward, not funny.

"Weekend At Bernie's" crossed with "The greatest Story ..."
If you liked Weekend At Bernie's you should watch Weekend At Jesus’s.
If you liked "The greatest Story ..." Don't watch Weekend At Jesus’s.
Weekend At Jesus’s is a lot of fun at the expense of a dead guy too many people think was real.
You know the plot:
J gets put to death for rabble rousing. His fellow cult members need to prop him up, fake a resurrection to keep the cult going.
The rest is alleged history. Only in this movie it's played for laughs. Low budget but it works.

The God Complex (2009)

Let me hear you say R'amen I love this movie.
These filmmakers are defiantly not believers. It says what I want to say, but funny. If you are sitting on the fence about religion, you need to see this. Makes a lot of good points using humor. (unlike me) 'Science' and 'Intelligence' are the villains, but win in the end. God is the ultimate anti-hero. Church groups should be protesting. To give this film some much needed publicity. Low budget, but well thought-out humor.

Zach Snyder can direct. He just can't write a story for shit. The "Part one" in the title is a bit of a red flag as well.
 
I just watched Doubt (2008). (I mention the year since several movies have this same name.)

I noticed it starred Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams -- with these great actors it became a must-see. This was before Amy Adams was a super-star, but she did get her 2nd nomination for Best Supporting Actress Oscar for this film. Viola Davis, with only one real scene, was also superb, and also received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress Oscar for this film.

Did others see this great film? Like the Streep character, I also have doubts about whether the alleged misbehavior was real. What do others think?

As soon as I started watching the film I realized I had watched it already! (I now know I watched it about five years ago.) But I could not remember the story or its ending, so I kept watching.

This is a common occurrence for me. Do others ever forget a movie completely like this? (My memory is very flawed in other ways as well -- though I can remember details of computer architectures I studied 50 years ago!)

Of course, a benefit of faulty memory is it makes it easier to enjoy re-watching a movie! Most of my favorite movies have been re-watched multiple times. (My memory isn't completely defunct. I think I have the entire Casablanca script memorized by now!)

IMDB rates Doubt at 7.5. I might rate it a bit higher due to the superb performances. But not much higher: Some ambiguous endings annoy me, and this most be one of the most ambiguous film endings in history!
 
Oppenheimer. Not yet sure how I feel about it. Not sure I care about his sex life, but, whatever.

The Italian Job, 7/10; The 2003 version, released 20 years ago, yikes!! Stars an ensemble cast including Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron and Donald Sutherland. A reasonable crime caper as a crew of amiable rogues try to get their own back on a former associate who has double crossed them. The movie opens up in Venice with a sophisticated heist and dramatic chase through the Venice canals. Focus moves to Los Angeles as the crew try to get their gold back from their former associate as he tries to move his swag through Los Angeles. The movie has some good action scenes and chases, the performances are good and is easy to watch.
 
I've always liked that movie too. Heist movies is one of my favorite genres.
 
I just watched Under Fire (1983): Nick Nolte, Gene Hackman, Joanna Cassidy all play journalists covering the revolution against Nicaragua's Somoza. It's called a "political thriller" although it has much more gunfire and blood than most political thrillers. Although the plot was a bit confusing and scattered, I'd rate it slightly higher than its 7.0 IMDB rating.

Ed Harris -- one of my favorite actors -- has only a small role in the film (1983 was the same year as his "breakout role" in The Right Stuff), but he may show up instead of Joanna Cassidy when Googling this film.

1983!! How did I pick a 41-year old movie to watch? I Googled to find two lists of Nick Nolte's Best Movies. Under Fire ranked #6 on one list and #12 on the other. With Gene Hackman and Ed Harris also shown -- giving the film three of my favorite actors -- it was an easy decision to watch this film.

The film that turned me into a Nick Nolte fan was Good Thief. It shows up as #1 on one of the Best-Nolte-Movies webpages, and doesn't appear at all on the other!
 
One Life: Anthony Hopkins made this worth watching. a quieter, more british version of Schindlers List.
Aquaman and the Lost City: //shrugs It's fine, but wait for streaming.
Wonka: Probably manufactured magic, but I'm sure you just won't care. Excellent stuff. :D
 
God I hate musicals.
I just watched season 2 of 'Strange New Worlds'. (the current Star Trek series)
The musical episode was unbearable.

The only musical I ever liked is 'Across The Universe'. (2007) It's all Beatles music. I bought the DVD.

I also like 'Yesterday' (2019), but it's not technically a musical. It is a parallel universe fantasy about an unknown musician taking credit for the Beatles music.

'A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum' (1966) was bearable.

Those three are the only musicals I can stand.
