I'm very much a westerner. I'm not a Canadian nor did I give him a standing ovation. I don't even know what his speech was about. Nor am I asking, because I don't care. However, I can well imagine a speech given, such as one about the value of free speech, that I'd cheer for myself. Just because he's a Nazi doesn't make him wrong about everything.

You want russians to listen to your lectures about how we are bad and how you are great?

Could someone who holds politically unpopular views give a similar speech to the Russian government? Here in the West, I expect that kind of freedom and so I am fine with others exercising similar freedom. That's one way we are better than Russia.

And frankly, I don't expect Russians to listen to lectures from westerners like me. I fully expect the Russian government to censor people with views like "The genocidal invasion of Ukraine by Russia is a crime against humanity on par with the U.S. invasion of Iraq."

How well would expressing that opinion go over in Moscow?

Why does Russia have memorials to Josef Stalin? He murdered more than a million of his own people. Millions more were forced into labor camps, deportation, famine, bloody massacres, and detention and interrogation by Stalin's henchmen.

Barbos is incredibly ignorant of Russian history, let alone the gradual revival under of Stalin under Brezhnev and the full-throated revival under Putin. When I visited in 1965, after Khrushchev had been replaced by Kosygin and Brezhnev, I visited Stalin's grave behind Lenin's Mausoleum on Red Square. Stalin's corpse had been moved out of the Mausoleum, where it had lain next to Lenin and was buried there. There was no headstone, just a plinth over the grave. Brezhnev had a headstone put over the grave with his bust as his gradual revival began.

As for Stalin not being as bad as Hitler, that is pure myth. Stalin was initially an ally of Hitler at the beginning of WWII and even conducted a modest antisemitic campaign to please Hitler. The alliance lasted from 1939 to 1941, when Hitler launched Operation Barbarossa on June 1 of 1941. During the 1930s, Stalin had millions of people murdered, usually by shooting executions, but he also used deliberate starvation during the Holodomor in his collectivization of farming, which was initially implemented by Stalin henchmen Kaganovich, Molotov, and several others. When Hitler occupied UKraine, he continued to use Stalin's ruinous collective farm system. Most of Stalin's murders were carried out against ethnic Poles, Belarusians, and Ukrainians, but he did start seriously rounding up, incarcerating, and killing Jews before his death. Stalin established the Gulag system of concentration camps. Mass deportations of populations were common.

Stalin was essentially the Hitler that won the war, and his reputation was whitewashed in the West because he was an important part of the Allied victory against Hitler. However, Stalin may well have "liquidated" just as many, if not more, people than Hitler over the course of his reign, some estimating that the number was as high as 20 million people.

In his history classes, I doubt that barbos heard much of anything at all about the Holodomor in Ukraine--Stalin's planned starvation of Ukrainian farmers in the early 1930s or Stalin's Great Terror of 1937. Millions died, although estimates vary--between 3.5 and 5 million people. The Holodomor was particularly vicious, because it created widespread cannibalism in people desperate to survive. It was carried out operationally by Stalin's thuggish henchmen, Vyacheslav Molotov and "Iron Lazar" Kaganaovich (who was later liquidated by Stalin). They even had quota lists for how many were expected to die--so-called "useless mouths" that were blamed for eating food without contributing to the Marxist-Leninist state. The resistance movement in Ukraine, the OUN, was well-motivated by the treatment of Ukrainians under Stalin's rule. They hoped that Poland would invade, but Poland signed the Soviet-Polish Non-Aggression Pact in 1932, dashing all hope of a foreign rescue. Ultimately, Ukrainian nationalists turned to the Germans as possible liberators, but Hitler had no interest in a Ukrainian nation and crushed them after he invaded Ukraine. Those who were not arrested collaborated willingly in Hitler's oppression of Jews and others, or were forced to do so. Not all of them cooperated, and some units reportedly refused orders to commit atrocities.
