I don't see why machines cannot be programmed to be conscious. How are humans not machines anyway? Consciousness is hardly a defined subject, what it is. This assumes that emotion can't be abstracted to a "value" or a "statement" around a set of values.

Floating point operations are sufficient, because emotions are states with values and "infinite" depth to the number is not necessary for that.

Emotions can be binary states and binary states can be emotional.

It seems to me your conclusion (and your wife's) depends primarily on the statement that emotions require the ability to express exact values for all values, but that's not necessary in the first place.

I get the humor. The kid sees the puppet as conscious and interacts accordingly. I think a machine can be programmed to do the same thing complete with being able to sense it's surroundings, including people.

Indeed, even the environment of the brain beyond the body of which it is a part is essential to the functioning of the mind. If you take a functional human and put it in solitary confinement, it loses its mind, even if all of its physical needs are met.

This sounds like a proof that Punch and Judy are conscious. Which seems to me a proof by reductio ad absurdum that perception is inadequate to determine the existence of consciousness.

Consciousness does NOT have to be real in order to be percieved as real; Therefore perceiving an entity to be conscious is NOT evidence for its being conscious.

The sum total of all knowably conscious entities in existence is one - and for each of us it is a different one.

This is precisely why I doubt that computers can ever be conscious, though clearly they can be intelligent, where intelligence is operationally defined as problem-solving abilities. When Deep Blue beat the chess champ, it was solving problems better than the champ was, but there is no reason to suppose it had any idea whatsoever what it was doing, or any sense of “self” or “doing” at all. In any event, Deep Blue calculated what was before the machine in a radically different way that Kasparov did, because computers and brains do not function in the same way. There does seem to be a growing appreciation of consciousness as embodied, with the constant feedback loops mentioned above necessary for its existence.

No, it's mind just changes. The brain is human and still instantiates a mind and that mind will be more than capable of still having thoughts.

Further you are committing a fallacy... I'm not sure if it's exactly a no-true-scotsman or a special plea, or some third classification in that general family, namely of selecting a contentious definition of "human mind", or of "mind" in general.

The things you mention are not fundamental to the "mindedness" of the thing, nor the "humanness" of the thing, however the stability of capabilities and the nature of thoughts any such thing has will surely change if you separate any such learning system from input originating from conserved environments in which it has learned to operate: the system will "drift".

This does not mean loss, of either mind or the capability we call "consciousness", but it does mean change. It means the system will no longer be conscious of its external environment, but that's about all that may be said for certain.

That said, on the topic of the OP, eventually AI will do a better job. When AI does a better job for better reasons while holding better axioms, AI can be in charge. Until then, AI should stay in artificial environments*

*It won't because humans are dumb and already gung ho ready to give this jankey ass AI we currently have all the rope we need to give them to hang ourselves what with the humanoid bodies with hands we are giving them, or more likely shoot us with the guns we are mounting on them.

The problem is with the word conscious. Most discussions on the subject seem to be saying that something isn't conscious unless it's conscious of its consciousness. Ultimately we judge consciousness on behavior of the organism and determine self awareness based on same. I don't see consciousness and self awareness as binary. There are degrees of both.

It does, and I don't argue that a tree isn't conscious. That's something other people have the unearned hubris to say, but not something I would say because I'm not that foolish or self-important.

If you wish to say something isn't conscious until it is conscious of its consciousness than nothing is completely conscious because no system can perfectly emulate itself as a subset of itself.

As such, self-awareness should be considered separately from consciousness, as an additional capability.

Personally, I see consciousness like I see "truth tables". Its not a question of if some construction has an operant truth, some identifiable mechanism of contingency on preconditions... But just as you say, these operant truths don't reduce to a binary.

You could say, assuming that things were just so, "it's conscious of itself insofar as it is conscious of how much strain is on its branch, expressed in terms of how much of a chemical is sent from the branch to the surrounding phylum and the adjoining region of roots, and the root responds to this awareness by pushing up a chemical that signals different forms of growth at the break, such that the root is aware of strain." You could say "this part of the root is not aware, however, so the consciousness of the strain is local to this section of the root, and other parts of the tree are NOT aware, and so there is no 'awareness' in or of 'the whole tree'"

Again, we don't have the facts in hand to make that statement, but if we had those facts, this is how the statement would, in my mind, flow from those facts.

As a result, consciousness does not 'compare' the way 5 compares to 6, Nor in the way "true" and "false" interact but rather in the way 5x/3=y compares to 1/(1-x)=y,x!=1, wherein you can compare qualities, perhaps quantities given values, but wherein the normal way of saying "more" or "less" doesn't really apply anymore without additional context to the question. If you took the difference of the functions, you would not end up with a value but another function.

A number of species have passed the mirror test, including ants(!) which is considered a marker of self-awareness. However even that is dubious; dogs don’t pass the mirror test, but they DO past an “aroma mirror” test, suggesting that they are self-aware but by odor and not vision. All this is very interesting, and I’m quite comfortable with the idea that other species possess not just consciousness but are aware that they are conscious. I just don’t see this phenomena manifesting itself in our machines. Jarhyn does seem to, however. Jarhyn, would you say Deep Blue was conscious of playing chess with Kasparov?

I would say Deep Blue was conscious "of where the pieces of the board were", and possibly at some loci that it was "playing chess". Whether it was conscious at any locus of "playing chess with Kasparov" depends greatly on whether the code has something active in memory of a form similar to "current game: chess", then it is aware in some locus that it is playing chess. If it has a likewise member of "current opponent for current game: Kasparov", then it is aware, at least ostensibly, that it is playing chess with Kasparov.

Whether it is aware of a great many other truths about the context is similarly answered by whether the system encodes that and bound in its behavior upon that encoding. Some awareness, such as "current opponent" could be a trivial awareness, not including such things as 'Kasparov.playerRank:high", in which case it would be aware that "it is playing Kasparov in chess and that it's opponent is skilled", and to get the operant meaning of those words beyond the trivial, you would have to look at the system's coding.

As to anything beyond being "conscious" of what I described is entirely bound up in what information is reflected in Deep Blue about Kasparov. It might be conscious of, aware of its opponent being Kasparov, but not, for instance, of Kasparov being the person who played many of the games it learned on, it might not be conscious that "those games were Kasparov" and "this is that Kasparov", or anything else about him.

Of course this is more complicated than many would like because the difference between two functions is a function, not a value.
