California Doing California Things

Not suitable in Los Angeles. We have some mass transit but the "homeless" use it for shelter and make it dangerous for others to use. Besides, I prefer the comfort of my own car. We need to vote these climate cultists out.
The problem is transit systems need to be good to get people to use them.

Consider a city I've been in many times that has a transit system that does work: Shanghai. Walking + subway almost always beats any other means of reaching anything that's not local. The bus stops are farther apart which means a bit more walking--but it also means buses aren't that much slower than cars. And the vast majority of people pay by means of RFID stored value cards--no messing with change or anything, if you're used to the system you can pay your fare while simply walking past the machine. Detection is basically instant if you get the card close enough to the scanner, no issues of alignment or anything and it doesn't even need to be exposed.. It just works. The same cards work on the subways, you just let it swipe across the detector. I can't imagine wanting a car in such an environment unless you frequently haul around stuff.
The LA metro is heavily used - ridership is around 61 million, the nation's fifth busiest system - just not by people like TSwizzle. It's not much to look at, tis true, but it's also not nearly as bad as SoCal suburbanites would have you believe.

The clowns that govern California and Los Angeles, the likes of governor Newsom, mayor Bass and the LA County board of supervisors have truly fucked up again. A few wildfires have broken out in Southern CA, the fire that is getting the most attention is the fire in Pacific Palisades. The fire here is the worst in the history of Los Angeles and has been devastating. It has destroyed a chunk of Malibu buildings too. The marxist mayor of Los Angeles Karen Bass (who was in the running to be Brandon's pick for VP) had fucked off to Ghana to attend a new prime minister or something last week. Ghana, really mayor Bass? In any event Bass, Newsom and the LA County board are squirming as the spotlight turns to their sheer incompetence in running government. A general lack of fire fighting resources aside, the FD were unable to get water out of the hydrants.

As the most destructive fire in Los Angeles area history rages, Mayor Karen Bass faces criticism over the timing of an overseas trip and budget cuts made months ago that affected the city’s fire department. In June, Bass approved a budget of nearly $13 billion that included a $17 million reduction in the LAFD’s more than $800 million budget for 2025. L.A. Fire Chief Kristen Crowley noted in a December report the funding deficit has affected the department’s “ability to maintain core operations,” including training and response to large-scale emergencies.
The report also highlighted that the department had been unable to perform required brush clearance inspections to mitigate fire risks, and residential inspections for fire safety compliance were reduced. “Ultimately, loss of funding impairs the Department’s ability to mitigate wildland fires and other hazards effectively,” the report stated.

Imbeciles. But people keep voting for them.

A 2% reduction in LAFD’s $800m budget is responsible for $150 billion fire?
How silly is that?
I guess I’d be looking for someone to blame too, if I lived in Santa Monica.

Things Tswizzle thinks are "Marxism":

- Reducing the budget of the public services paid for by taxes.
- Visiting other countries on business.
- Being on fire.

Jokes aside, I'm glad you're okay buddy. Was worried when I saw the news. Looks fucking apocalyptic down there.

I’m sure that with that extra 2% they could have kept wind gust speeds far below 100mph.

So one of the worst fires in LA history... and you are stunned the water system which is designed to provide water to people and put out local fires... couldn't manage stopping a massive record setting wildfire?

Standing among the smoldering ruins of Pacific Palisades Newsom is confronted by a very distressed resident. His response, "I'm literally on the phone with the president".

What an insufferable prick Gavin Newsom really is. What the fuck is Brandon going to do? He has already checked out.

Mind you, Newsom's hair is impeccable.

Critics on social media have alleged that Mayor Karen Bass cut the city fire department’s budget by $23 million this year. The accusation has spread quickly, with many looking to cast blame for the devastating wildfires that have destroyed thousands of buildings in Los Angeles County this week and resulted in at least 4 deaths.

In her story on criticism’s of Mayor Bass during this crisis, reporter Linh Tat addressed the budget question.

“On Thursday, a spokesperson for L.A. City Councilmember Bob Blumenfield, who was budget chair last year, said the city increased the fire department’s overall budget by approximately $53 million in the current fiscal year. However, $76 million – intended to pay for fire department personnel – was placed in a fund separate from the fire department’s regular account when the budget was adopted because contract negotiations with department employees were still taking place at the time.”

As a result, if you just compare the LAFD’s budget last year to this year’s, it looks like it went down $23M. But that’s because when the budget was adopted last May or June, the city was still negotiating those new contracts. The $76M that was set aside in a separate account ultimately was moved once the MOUs were finalized.

What should he do, in your opinion?

Resign.
Are you saying that would prevent wildfires somehow, or are you incapable of focusing on a topic for more than one post?

Okay, maybe I was unclear.

My question is: What should Marxist Karen Bass, Gorgeous Gavin Newsom, and Sleepy Joe Biden do about the wildfire situation in California? You're criticizing what they have done or not done, but have yet to suggest an alternative approach of any kind.

It seems to me that addressing wildfires at all requires recognition that the climate has changed in ways that greatly exacerbate fire risk, and a willingness to spend taxpayer money on improving and expanding public safety. Within this thread, you are generally a supporter of a political party that rejects uncensored scientific study of the climate, income taxation, and more than a bare minimum of public spending. You're attempting to portray these wildfires as exclusively the result of Democratic policy, but they seem to me to be a failure of both policy and education, which go far beyond any question of partisan policy. There is no party that believes in supporting fire prevention or preparation if it comes at a significant cost or requires specialized knowledge. Especially during the times of year when there aren't many big fires yet but elections are around the corner.

I'm not Californian so I don't really know.

But didn't Californians like you insist on a recall of Newsom referendum? Didn't Newsom blow away his nearest competitor, a Teaparty radio show host?
Why do you think that there's a better alternative to Newsom?

You asked a question, don't get all pissy when you get the answer. Newsom should resign because he is a fucking moron fixated on busllshit and can't govern. He is a failure at government.
So you did misunderstand my question. That's okay, I will ask it again.

I did not misunderstand that question. I literally answered the question. The insufferable prick should resign and I mean that. And I told you why he should resign.

You then throw up a non related bullshit question.

To clarify. I thought it was very clear that since what you were criticizing his wildfire response, my question was probably also about the wildfire response not a random change of subject. Clearly, this escaped you. That's fine. I'm not mad. I can see how I left room for ambiguity, and apologize for confusing you. But now that you do understand what I was asking, why don't I ask it again? For the third time. And perhaps you will have an answer this time. Yes? Perhaps a "literal" answer, since you prefer those?

My literal question is:

What should Marxist Karen Bass, Gorgeous Gavin Newsom, and Sleepy Joe Biden do about the wildfire situation in California?

A literal answer would be most welcome.

Brandon can't do anything, he has checked out. He checked out a few days after his disastrous debate with Trump. Many would argue that Brandon checked out long before that but I will be kind. In any event, he will be out of office.

The other two clowns are supposed to govern. The first clown, Newsom is supposed to govern the state. He has failed spectacularly. Which is why he was the subject of a recall. Marxist Bass is another naked emperor. She too is supposed to govern. She has failed spectacularly on just about every issue we have in Los Angeles. Wildfires are nothing new in California.
