Well... it's Trump... again. #47, here we go.

We barely fought in WWI. The French lost a generation in that war of nonsense.
Europe lost a generation. The British, Germans, Russians, Italians, and all of the territories that were then part of the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires suffered horribly, from 1914 to 1918.

The Americans fought a couple of battles on the Western Front in 1918, having waited until it was clear who would win, before joining in on the victorious side in order to claim a place at the table when the spoils were being divided.
Now, now. Don't be like that.

Two former Wells Fargo executives were fined $8.5M by the Biden admin for covering up the bank's infamous fake account scandal. Trump just slashed those fines to a paltry $150,000 after Wells Fargo gave $1M to his inauguration. See how this works?

The Never Ending Sport: just for kicks, try to imagine Lindsey Graham, McConnell, Teddy Cruz, Georgia Marj, Juvenile Delinquent Vance, and let's throw in Karoline Leavitt, even though it's anachronistic, reacting to Obama making a screen shot of himself as Pope. There'd be smoke coming out of their ears. They'd be shaking their heads and talking about how evil and anti-religion it was. I'm pretty sure Marj would read an impeachment resolution in the House.

Any democratic president doing that would be impeached. It's got to be illegal.

BTW, Happy Star Wars day (May the 4th be with you)!

Just don't confuse it with Cinco de Mayo, like this guy did. That's tomorrow:

Not only did he confuse Star Wars with Mexico, he also doubled down and confused Cinco de Mayo with Mexican Independence Day (this is actually on Sept 16, Cinco de Mayo is its own holiday). Common mistake in the US since Cinco de Mayo is a much bigger holiday here, but if you're going to go around playing justice warrior, at least get your facts straight first!

Trump only did it because it is obviously best for the common man.

Presidential actions are only illegal if Congress says they are via the impeachment process. The Supreme Court has already ruled that "official acts" by the President are legal. And ANY act Congress chooses to impeach over is illegal, no matter how harmless or benign.

Do you are right, but unless Congress chooses to do something about it, it doesn't mattter that you are right.

It remains a mystery how Trump -- criminal con-man, narcissist, ignorant buffoon, psychopath -- got enough votes to win the White House a second time.

The American electorate rejected the left-wing populist W.J. Bryan; rejected the right-wing populist George Wallace; and rejected the right-winger Barry Goldwater, despite that Goldwater had more integrity and displayed more intelligence than almost any Republican today. Ross Perot, with a plan similar to Trump's but an IQ half again as high, was sent home with less than 19% of the vote.

So how can the election of this cretin be explained?

America was once a vibrant melting-pot, with good-spirited people, with communities working together, with mainstream media sending mainstream messages. There were two "big-tent" political parties, often working together. Political discourse featured respect. Will Rogers was a famous political comedian a century ago: Can anyone imagine such a comedian today saying "I never met a man I didn't like"?

I think many voters chose Trump less because they liked what they were hearing from the right and more from disgust at what they heard (or thought they heard) from the left. Bill Maher has been warning about this.

... as Bill Maher once said. "I'd vote for Biden's head in a jar full of blue water before I'd vote for Trump."

Despite dining with the Orange Buffoon, Maher is NOT a Trumpist. I found this video about an "unwoke" man being jilted at the altar both amusing AND instructive.

I've had opinions about political issues all my life but throughout my 20's, 30's and even 40's I was focused on career and other personal matters. I could name very few top officials and seldom read a newspaper. At this message-board we're now mostly "news junkies" but many Americans are as apathetic about politics as I was when I was young. There must be a better way to get through to some Trump voters than screaming at them about how stupid they are.

So what happened? I suspect it is not all the "conservatives" fault.

Your lack of voting (as a nation) suggests that is true.
There must be a better way to get through to some Trump voters than screaming at them about how stupid they are.
Perhaps you could tell your friends that then? It might be a good start.

In my recent post I should have stressed that the race AWAY from sensible centrism is NOT the only cause of our dysfunction.
Indeed media may be most to blame. Extremist views are promoted by Facebook algorithms, by politics being controlled by big money donors, and by successful trolling from enemies like Russia. When I blame media, I'm not pointing fingers at specific personalities, but blaming the unfortunate SYSTEM that technology has evolved. What optimists hoped would be a revolution of information has instead become a revolution of DISINFORMATION.

Yes. I have always been a fan of compulsory voting. IIUC, non-voters aren't handcuffed in compulsive countries; penalties are so weak the compulsion is more a gentle moral effort. Australia?

Thailand has "compulsory voting" but many ignore the minor penalties. For my daughter to vote in Chiang Mai she'd need to change her "house registration" which would tend to forfeit her property rights in her birth province.

What friends? 8-) Expats here in the Kingdom don't vote, aren't from swing states, and/or are VERY set in their prejudices. I HAVE wasted hours in an effort to sway RVonse towards rational thought. This effort has been spectacularly unsuccessful. Focus must be on apathetic "Undecideds" -- are there any such here at IIDB? -- MAGATs just double-down on their ignorance. @RVonse -- Do you agree that Trump would make the best Pope ever? 8-) Are you thrilled that it will soon be uneconomic to show foreign-filmed movies and TV in the USA?

I have one 35 year-old American friend, doing IT projects for American companies while living (with a work permit) here in the Kingdom. (He acknowledges that he is severely autistic, a fact quickly and clearly visible upon acquaintance. No complaint there -- I and some family members are also autistic.)

He had never heard of the J6 insurrection -- :realitycheck: -- and proudly admitted to not following politics at all. Yet when I offered to inform him of the lamentable turn in the last decade he interrupted -- uninterested in any facts -- to recite 20th century memes like "GOP respects property rights and is better for business."

He is less obdurate (if less informed) than Mr. Vonse but, as with most expats, I doubt if he bothers to vote.

Am I imagining it, or does Rump look less orange lately?
The pompadour is certainly turning white, and in harsh light, a lot more scalp can be seen.
As for the face, only his personal bronzer would know. I understand that the White House buys only from Cle de Peau Beaute, in the two-kilo tub size. Trump's favored shades are, in order, Flamin' Hot Funyuns, Extra Toasty Cheez-It, Chernobyl Tan, and Ripe Ugli. Contrary to urban legend, there is no Gibbon with the Squirts shade.
