Trump's Appointments

Teach a man to fish.
The VA has mandatory nutrition, exercise, and behavior modification classes, twelve of them to be exact before considering approving a prescription of any weight loss drug. And this during the Biden administration.
It is my understanding that to this day the medical community, in all their training, still receives little education on nutrition. Now what might that lead us to believe about the general population regarding its knowledge about nutrition when their own doctor knows next to fuck all about it?

These people for all their wacky crap about vaccines do seem to be pushing in the right direction with regards to the obesity epidemic. Will it bear any fruit? We'll see. We'll see if they go after the shit food industry.

Gotta start somewhere though, right? And a good place to start would be with the crap people are shoveling into their gob.
Sorry, no.

You don't control diabetes with diet and nutrition.
I'm trying to phrase this every which way I can to prove you right but I, the NIH, the ADA seem to think otherwise. UCLA is even under the naive assumption that diabetes can be reversed. What's up with that.
Type 2 diabetes is the inability of the body to of the body use insulin made by the body effectively. Type 2 diabetes can sometimes be reversed with diet and exercise. Type 1 diabetes, which is an autoimmune disease, is the inability of the body to produce sufficient insulin to adequately regulate the uptake of glucose in the bloodstream. This leads to serious complications with regards to the circulatory system and other organs, especially eyes. Type 1 diabetics are dependent on medically prescribed insulin to live.

Patients with either type of diabetes benefit from a healthy diet and exercise but these measures are inadequate for type 1 diabetes.

Yes, I know. My only point being that from reading the story it is obvious Makary is referring to type II diabetes alone. It's not a legal document. It's a news article. It needs to be read in its proper context.

Background: There are nearly 300,000 Chinese nationals attending universities in the United States. Some will fall in love with the country; stay here; and maybe earn a Nobel Prize while teaching at UCLA, USC, Columbia or Purdue. Some will return home and use their knowledge of American culture to help make changes for the better in China. And, for those who think only of next quarter's trade deficit, they are changing yuan renminbi into dollars to pay for their education here!

Three hundred thousand! With Two TH's! This triumph for American universities is an example of what once made America Great!

But this isn't a thread about America's universities and their welcome for foreign students. It's about the hatred-drenched morons in the Trump Administration.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Contemplating Trump's Cabinet nominations one is struck by how many would be inconceivable if even a glimmer of sanity prevailed.

Here are five of the most startling choices. In saner times any one of these nominations would be a major scandal. But during the absurdity of Trump-47 Americans are just thankful the choices weren't even more laughable.
  • Pete Hegseth -- Secretary of Defense
  • Matt Gaetz -- Attorney General
  • Robert F. Kennedy Jr. -- Secretary of Health and Human Services
  • Kristi Noem -- Secretary of Homeland Security
  • Tulsi Gabbard -- Director of National Intelligence
Four of these five were actually approved by the United States Senate! Only Matt Gaetz had to withdraw -- apparently a known child sex trafficker was too much for even the GOP. He might have been OK for SecDef or DNI, but a few GOP Senators drew the line since Atty-Gen is responsible for enforcing child sex trafficking laws. Or maybe his crimes were too small-time: Had he been an elite pal of Jeffrey Epstein would he have been accepted?

There was one nomination that passed 99-0 in the Senate:
  • Marco Rubio -- Secretary of State
Rubio is an ultra-right-wing asshole, allied with the Tea Party, who made major lies on his biography, denies that climate change is man-caused, helped gerrymander Florida, and is so vitriolic in his hatred for China that he is not allowed to enter that country. In other words he is a moderate by MAGA standards, and is the hope that sanity may prevail. When the imbeciles in the Situation Room are debating a nuclear strike against Shenzhen, it will be Rubio who stands up and recommends caution.

But now it is Rubio who has plans to deport Chinese university students. Not just to reject new applications, but to deport students already here with valid student's visas. Did he do this as part of a fellatio ritual to prove his loyalty to Trumpism? Or is this just his own hatred in action? Maybe instead of hoping he will be the adult who discourages bombing Shenzhen, we should set our hopes lower. Will he object to nuking other enemy cities, like Copenhagen or Ottawa?

Asking for the context of people in the Trump Administration will likely only lead to anxiety, depression, and weight loss.

Wait... you mean you didn't know there are two types of diabetes... and that it wasn't leaked from a lab in China... and that...

The point is that it is very rare for T2D being controlled through diet and exercize alone. It's a pie in the sky goal that sounds great on paper but will hurt and possibly kill people in the long run.

Diabetes can be “reversed”?
Type II diabetes can be mitigated. Type I diabetes needs insulin from infancy. Neither form can be “reversed” afaik, though rigorous attention to diet and exercise plus conscientious monitoring, can eliminate many of the effects of Type II diabetes, and in rare cases make it functionally disappear altogether. All people with Type I diabetes require insulin for life.

The fact is, You don't control diabetes with diet and nutrition alone.

Of course, changes to diet can help.

Suggesting that you can control diabetes ONLY through dietary changes, is like suggesting that you can fix a gunshot wound by just elevating the injured limb. Sure, the EMTs will tell you to do that. But they won't tell you that that's the ONLY thing you need to do.

It’s the way the UCLA story phrased it: reversed but not eliminated.
Given the context of the story and the fact that 90-95% of all diabetes is type II, it is a fair assumption that Makary is only referring to type II.
It’s safe to assume that the vast majority of Type II cases can be effectively treated with a sufficiently rigorous regimen of diet and exercise. But even the most dedicated fans of strict diet and exercise programs, often struggle to stay on point with it. And most Type II patients are not of that sort, or they would probably never know that their insulin production was sub-normal in the first place. Withhold insulin, and many will die in short order, and most will live shortened lives. .
Most people who have type !! diabetes aren't treated with insulin, unless their blood sugar rises substantially. Most are treated with other medications. Insulin is mostly used to treat type I diabetes, which is often diagnosed in childhood. People with type II do produce insulin, just not enough to control their blood sugar effectively. And yes, obesity and eating habits can be risk factors for type II diabetes. Does the idiot JFKjr even realize that not all people with diabetes take insulin. The majority of my former patients who had type II were on other drugs for DM. Early stage or pre stage DM can sometimes be controlled by diet and losing weight. It's complicated.

These idiots want to ban lots of Rx. drugs and they also want to ban certain tasty junk foods. While it's true that most Americans eat too much of these junk foods, nobody should have the power to take them away from us. Obesity is an epidemic, one that isn't easy to treat, but JFKjr has no idea hot to treat it or the many factors that cause it, including genetics.

And do it very expensively, too, further burdening our healthcare system and putting more people in poverty.

Interesting to note, down in “political views” he donated to Obama in ‘08.

Nitpick: JFKjr is the handsome lad who saluted at his father's funeral, and then at age 38 killed himself and two passengers flying a private plane in bad weather.

The crackpot with the worm in his brain is RFKjr, the cousin of JFKjr.

Thank you. I was in a hurry and wasn't thinking when I wrote JFK instead of RFK.

And Type I patients? Just let ‘em die?
Yeah. They talked of death panels--and now they're trying to implement them. Blame the person for the situation and their death becomes due to their "inaction" (never mind if they actually could have acted) and not the government's fault. We've already seen it with abortion--permitted for medical reasons only but by definition there are no medical reasons.

I do agree the medical community is lacking in nutritional information. I've been forced to learn a lot on my own because they have no answers for "so what should I do?"

But here you go off into cuckoo land.

Type 1 diabetes is due to a lack of insulin production. The only options are insulin or die. You can't make your body respond better to what isn't there to respond to.

And note that the distinction of food groups is based entirely on process, not on the merits of the end product. The problem comes from the fact that they typically have too much fat, too much sugar and are too attractive so people eat too much. And people aren't active enough. I eat a pretty bad diet (lack of options, not by choice) but my weight, cholesterol and A1c are fine and a stress test just came back normal. But I did inherit a nasty gene that mimics the effect of high LDL cholesterol. (Which is why the stress test in the first place.)

Type 1 is a lack of insulin production. Insulin or die, there are no other options. Lifestyle is pretty much irrelevant other than it's one of the things Covid can do to you.

Type 2 is your body not using the insulin properly. Exercise and keeping your weight where it should be can make a big difference. Typically handled with medication although in bad enough cases insulin might be needed.

Thus note a huge gap between "diet and exercise can control diabetes" and "diet and exercise can remove the need for insulin."
