Both Kimmel and Carson were employed by CBS. For better or worse the FCC regulated and still regulates CBS to make sure they are a public service good. The bar is much lower for Fox news or even CNN because they are not viewed to going over public airways by the FCC.Comedians and writers of humor have commented on politics for centuries. Humor is a powerful way to educate. No, political commentary is not a prerequisite for comedy, anymore than dancing is a necessity for a singer. But the best comedians have not been bashful about revealing their political feelings. Mark Twain, H.L. Mencken, Will Rogers, and even Benjamin Franklin were humorists who wrote much about politics. Closer to the present, Mort Sahl and George Carlin were top comedians who specialized in discussing politics.
I watched many episodes of Johnny Carson decades ago, but about all I remember of him now is "he was the guy he used to bend out of view to take snorts of cocaine even when on camera." Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart have given us rather more substance to remember them by.
Modern comedians could learn a thing or two from late comedian Johnny Carson. Carson was just as funny as anyone else but he never alienated half his audience because he was careful to be a political athiest. Carson lasted over 30 years in the business.
If I were the CEO of Disney or some other outlet I would tell my employees exactly the same thing. Don't let your customers know your politics so you won't lose half your business.
We can see that you, as one who admires Trump, think that financial gain should be the only motive for a comedian or TV talk-show host. But those of us with a broader view of human motivation are repulsed by the selfish greed that motivates adherents to Trumpism.
And especially discouraging is that you treat the "partisanship" today as similar in quality to the D-vs-R partisanship of the 20th century. To you, @RVonse , Trump and his merry band of criminals and fascists are just another instantiation of the Eisenhower, Reagan or Bush Administrations.
The U.S. is mutating before our eyes into a banana republic not unlike Myanmar, Iran, Hungary, Saudi Arabia, El Salvador or Russia. And this transformation is proceeding at a pace much faster than even pessimists expected. And yet, as we witness even here at IIDB where most posters have 95+ IQs, millions of Americans don't see it, even now. Where do you all get your news? Alex Jones, QAnon, Karoline Leavitt and idiots_are_us.com ?
So if you want to be a comedian who is constantly grinding the ax for one party I would not pick a public network like ABS, CBS, or NBC that in the past was closely regulated by the FCC. I would continue to grind away on a cable network instead. Because like it or not, you are not providing a public good if you are making fun of half the public population.
