The US federal gov’t has an estimated $10 billion of equity and options in US companies ranging from Intel, Westinghouse and US Steel to startups like Vulcan Elements under our white nationalist POTUS, Yet nary a peep from the scaremongers of socialism. Makes one wonder.

He's always used Marxist rhetoric. Burn the elites, when is it OUR turn? Only when he promises power to the people, he means corporations.

Investing tax payer money in oligarch industries is not the same thing as socialism.

This is a surprise to anyone? Does this mean the forum will turn against Socialism because Trump likes it?
In order for Trump to like socialism, he would need to know what it is, beyond a word he can use to get a desired reaction. Trump understands Mamdami's economic policies no more than he understands capitalism. We need to keep in mind that Trump believes tariffs are paid by the importer and can't understand why it makes imported goods more expensive.

Okay. But he's definitely not a libertarian pro capitalist. He's taking ownership in companies, telling companies who to trade with, micro-managing HR departments (attacking DEI and etc.), telling them how to name their sports arena, and etc. He is not the pro-business that he touts himself as. Far from it.

Well yeah. In order to be something, he needs to believe in something. All he believes in is what will make him better off. He is a devout believer in self-interest.

I hope that resppnse is tongue in cheek because gov’t owning part of the means of production ( equity in a firm) is socialism.

We see “chicken littling” over the socialistic threats that Kamala Harris and Mamdani posed while keeping silent during actual socialism is practiced.

The actual definition of socialism includes actual control over the means of production, not a passive equity share. I could buy a large amount of General Motors stock, but until I own a majority share, I have no say in the color of next year's Chevrolets.

The tongue in cheek element of this discussion is calling anything Trump has done any kind of socialism. The honest word is corruption. The American people will receive nothing in return for the money invested in private companies.

You are the not the federal gov’t with massive control of regulatory interpretation and enforcement.

1st, the OP didn’t call anything Trump did “socialism”. 2nd, socialism and corruption are not incompatible.

And yet, here we are discussing Trump and socialism. No system is immune to corruption.

In our current situation, we see Trump using regulatory interpretation and enforcement to extort money out of Paramount. There is little doubt that same regulatory power will be used to insure the value of the government's stake in certain private businesses(also know as "a piece of the action"), which really sucks if you happen to be one of their competitors. Once the government starts to determine winners and losers in the free market, the market is no longer free, and we have neither capitalism nor socialism.

Say what you want, but as Steve Schmidt says,
“The hatred of Donald Trump is the only thing uniting the country.”

In the case of US Steel, its just exactly the opposite of government maintaining a passive equity role for that company. Trump negotiated "golden shares" which are worthless equity wise yet allow the US POTUS to take an active role in that corporation's board management. Forcing majority share holder Nissan Steel to benefit American workers by keeping open an unprofitable US located plant open (in Granite City, Illinois).

So I'm not sure what you call the definition of a foreign company (Nissan Steel) being forced to provide jobs for Americans in the US. Should we call this Japanese socialism for American workers? Trump would most likely just call this his "superior negotiating effort" saving American jobs.

But whatever its called, I still don't like it. I don't like it because corruption appearing to work in the short term will no doubt have longer term consequences not at all desirable in the future. Of course Trump will be long gone by then.

Our government has always been choosing winners and losers, its never not been that way in my lifetime. Because if that were not the case, all the lobby's in Washington DC would be obsolete and not useful.

But this seems an odd hill to die on.

We can more easily agree that his actions are wrong and unconstitutional. And being enabled by the entire GOP. At this point, we are more arguing labels in multiple threads instead of the simple and undeniable fact of his Administration's actions are wrong.

My point was and is that there are many people who are warn about the imposition of “socialism” when certain candidates run but who are mute when it is happening now. This silence extends beyond MAGAs.
