2028 Presidential Election

(c) El Rapo croaks.

Increasingly, it won't matter how or why, as long as he's dead and everybody knows it.

but I'm not sure he'd be such a good choice, although one of my dogs would be a better choice compared to the mentally disturbed person we have in office now
Of course Newsom is a stinker of a choice.

The fucker is as limp as Schumer in his own way.
WTF are you talking about? Schumer was the first Senate Majority leader to get two reconciliation bills passed in the Senate. Without Schumer, Biden would have signed virtually nothing.
I think you missed the part where Schumer rolled over on the shutdown and let the GOP win literally everything they asked for in exchange for a fucking pinky promise.

Schumer does not know how to play hardball, and it shows.
What would that have looked like?
Maybe not rolling over or doing nothing? We have literally DECADES of Republican playbook to work off of for working an agenda.

Take your pick?
So, you got nothing.

I remember the same stuff back in 2005. Why aren't the Democrats impeaching W. Howard Dean had a plan, and the Democrats in 2006 took a large majorities on the path to a supermajority in the Senate in 2008 because of that plan. It wasn't as gratifying as impeaching W for Iraq, but it worked, ACA (in all its imperfection) happened because of that, even despite the Great Recession. Under Biden, the Democrats had almost no majority. It was razor thin and Pelosi/Schumer managed two reconciliation bills that got through an agenda that otherwise would have been impossible to enact with the filibuster happy GOP.

Schumer didn't exactly cave in the spring and the Democrats didn't cave in the fall. If we have an election in 2026, the polling numbers are looking good enough that the thoughts of taking the Senate back are happening despite the wickedly difficult Senate election map this year. Schumer knows the Democrats can't do anything substantial unless they can regain power in one of the Houses. Schumer isn't stupid, he isn't caving, he is more effectively than Harry fucking Reid ever was while still managing to appear Senatorial. He is far from being wickedly liberal, but if that is what you want, you are in the wrong country.

ETA: Yes, Sen. Reid was the majority leader in the Senate when ACA was passed.

So, they managed to (checks notes) do the bare minimum that ANY congress critter could manage with a simple majority, the equivalent of 3 inch putt in golf, and you're applauding them specifically for "being the only ones capable of doing it".

You're not making a case for yourself.

Talk about lowered expectations.

The fact is, it's easy enough to recognize the difference between the successes of the Republicans, however repugnant, and the serial failures of Democrats.

To be fair, a lot of that has to do with the fact that all the shareholders for the media are wealthy investor-class individuals, none of which want Democrat policies enacted because that means they have to actually be on the hook to pay for their benefits. As a result, the privately owned media will never support messaging for socially conscientious policy, no matter whether that elephant in the room happens to wear a donkey costume for the time being: no matter what Democrats do, it will be smeared by a media that names "Democrats" and "Congress" for fuckups and "Republicans" and "Congress" for successful policies.

But as long as "centrists" refuse to recognize this bias and refuse to consider progressive candidates or persistently call people and peers away from such problematic sources, this will continue.

What the Dems should have been doing with their majority is seating people on committees who had interest in separating corporate power from Washington. They should have been focused on nominations. They should have removed the filibuster on judicial appointments and gotten the SCOTUS appointments that were their due because as we can clearly see what an effect that had.

We saw Schumer and Pelosi give up a majority of the SCOTUS and the federal judiciary, because they were too much of cowards to nuke the filibuster for such nominations.

Clearly, the filibuster for judicial nominations hasn't saved the dems from the appointment of Republican stooges like Eileen "doesn't look like anything at all" Cannon, whose selective vision osnlegendary. So clearly the thing you suggested, maintaining the filibuster, didn't fucking work except to keep Democrats from balancing out the court system.

Of course, I'll maintain that the thing that the people should consider Dems as candidates for have nothing to do with their congressional resumes and everything to do with their military resumes at this point.

The bare minimum would be zero reconciliation bills. The norm is one reconciliation bill. They got two which was unprecedented.

That is about as short-sighted as it can get.

What filibuster on judicial nominees? That doesn't exist anymore. Hasn't been since 2013ish (Dems canned it), except SCOTUS, and that was canned later (by GOP).

I agree. Probably for very different reasons though.
The fucker is as limp as Schumer in his own way. The fucker just met with Shapiro of all people and spent the better half of it sucking fascist dick.
Charming image. What do you mean concretely?
Newsom is, and has always been, controlled opposition: someone that idiots will vote for (and if it's the primary, ONLY idiots), and which will do nothing in office if they actually get it.
He is a Hillary, a Biden, a Pelosi and a Schumer.
Biden did quite a lot while in office. He caved too much to the left fringe, especially on spending, but nobody can accuse him of doing nothing.
Schumer and Pelosi likewise did a lot while leaders in Senate and the House, respectively.
Hillary never got elected, but I assume she would have had an active presidency had she won.
What are you on about here?
We need a Walz not a Newsom.
Ugh. I think Newsom would be a mediocre president, but Walz would be a poor one. Although, the Knucklehead could probably not even get elected to try to prove me wrong. Why do you like him?

I think you missed the part where Schumer rolled over on the shutdown and let the GOP win literally everything they asked for in exchange for a fucking pinky promise.
The real mistake was the shutdown itself. Given that Trump wants to reduce the size of the federal government, shutting down parts of it played right into his hands. An ongoing shutdown was harming the Dems and their constituency far more than the GOP.
Schumer does not know how to play hardball, and it shows.
He had a weak hand, and he tried to play it when he should have folded, as Kenny Rogers sang.
Neither does Newsom, really. He's as plastic as Pelosi when we need steel.

So, fuck literally everyone who has given any single inch to this administration, or to anyone who would give such an inch.

Without the immediate formation of a serious, well-organized resistance to this, the US will become a Nazi nation. Maybe it's too fucking late.
We are fucked.
We have two optionns,
(a) Fight back, and play into his hands, risk the inserection act.
(b) Continue peaceful risistance, appear weak, and he invades more citys. (and more countrys)
No.

We organize. We support every Democrat candidate for any office ( I really really hate writing that but it’s necessary) at every single level, especially keeping an eye on who is running for local and county positions that can control access to voter rolls. All politics is local, so support candidates who understand the job and the US Constitution and state constitution. Support isn’t just money or votes but showing up and spreading the word about why you support any particular candidate.

So… a vast improvement over present conditions.
Not that I disagree with Newsom’s vacuity*, but we need to learn the lesson of electability that Trump should have taught us; Central Casting Candidates beat smart sensible people every time. That’s Newsom vs Walz.

* he is a relentless mocker, so not an entirely empty vessel.
Why do you think Walz is "smart"? Or "sensible"?

Totally agree. We're fucked today because we got lazy and overconfident, and got our butts kicked badly in 24. We the people to the left of Maga need to get off our high horse and vote in 26. Make your vote count. Organize. Donate. Support your local politician. Vote in 26. Vote in 28. It's okay to vote third party in primaries. But for god's sake, vote dem in the general or we will be fucked tomorrow. The republican congress is not going to rein in MAGA.

Support your local politician. Vote in 26. Vote in 28.
‘26, if a fair vote occurs, is last call for democracy. And if that election fails to attain a Dem majority AT LEAST in the House, it’s game over.
I know that sounds alarmist, but when it comes to Donald Trump and his cabal, I have rarely been wrong.
All the things that Harry indicates must be done, with each individual acting on their strength and in concert where needed.
I am still VERY doubtful that the coming election will happen without flagrant, probably violent cheating, and that even with a massive win by democrats, that they will be seated in January.

No, we're fucked. SCOTUS is set for 15 to 20 years, at least. But, we need to get things in motion to reduce the damage coming in the next couple of decades.

Trump and the GOP are unilaterally tearing down global institutions that helped provide unprecedented prosperity to more people than ever before. And they are doing so... for no real reason. We must work to remove these people from power at the booth, because the cost of their actions is going to be incalculable.

I think the election happens, the seating of the winners, to be seen.

Democratic majorities could expand the Supreme Court.

I don't think they will. And they shouldn't. We might as well just get rid of the court at that point. The trouble with sociopaths is they just abuse systems to their advantage, destroying them, and the only way to fight back is to make it worse. But that obviously doesn't help much. The GOP broke SCOTUS. The GOP are breaking the separation of powers.

They won't but they ought to.

Expanding the court doesn't make it worse, it makes it more capable of representing a diverse and large population, and with the potential to make it more difficult to game the political balance of it.

First, Alito and Thomas must be impeached and removed. The reasons are obvious and do not need to be repeated. If the dems take the senate that will give them huge control over who gets onto the court.

If necessary expand the court.

You aren't going to impeach Thomas or Alito. They weren't bribed into providing their opinions. They were paid to bother staying on the court in the first place for less money. Their opinions were never in doubt. Their asses in those seats is what is being paid for.

Never mind the supreme court; You need to expand the presidency.

Have three presidents at a time, with a majority vote required to sign legislation into law, and a unanimous vote required for executive and/or military orders.

Of course, that would mean almost nothing could ever get done, but that's not a bug, it's a feature.
