I tried watching Trump's rant; I really tried. I'll never understand why he has charisma with so many Americans but I can't deny that he does.

But fucking listening to the cunt drone on - it sounded as though he was even bored of his own fucking voice. And then there was what he said which was basically,

"I want you to be angry about this!"
"Now be pissed off about this!"
"Remember this? Be mad about it!"

Nothing about what he has accomplished as President (lightbulb moment) but just a glorified Twitter rant in all caps.

I'm sure MAGA jacked themselves off raw throughout all of it.

Your first two sentences are exactly how I (and 90% of my friends) feel. How is it possible that this most obvious con man, liar, grifter, racist, and sadist has the approval of even a sliver of the electorate? He says a lot about my country that has been awful news to swallow. Can't imagine how Aussies discuss this revolting human -- I've always found a streak of profane glee in Australian humor, and God knows that's a sensible way to discuss Donald.

We discuss him as little as possible. Most of us anyway. There is always in any sizeable community those who like to discuss the undiscussable.

Trump called on legislators to stand and show their support if they agree that the "first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens." That garnered a prolonged standing ovation from Republicans and silence from seated Democrats, prompting Trump to say they should be "ashamed of themselves."

This was one of a few times where Omar correctly called out Trump for murdering--or at least making excuses for the murder of--American citizens in her state. What exactly was Omar yelling?

“You have killed Americans,” Omar, a Somali American who represents a Minnesota district, shouted multiple times at Trump, before gesturing at him and adding, “You should be ashamed.”

So: policies that result in Americans being killed (or excusing those outcomes), followed by rhetoric accusing others of not caring about American lives—then when someone objects, call them crazy. That’s not Tourette’s. That’s deflection. It looks a lot like gaslighting.

As for Trump’s “first duty” framing, it’s worth addressing directly. Let’s pretend it was an honest question. What actually is the first duty of the American government? According to the Founders, the purpose of government is to secure the unalienable rights of individuals—life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Security and liberty have always existed in tension. If Trump said he was going to confiscate everyone’s guns because “the first duty of the American government is to protect citizens,” many conservatives would immediately see the problem. Protection alone cannot override constitutional limits. The first duty is to uphold the Constitution and protect rights within that framework.

As for the “illegal aliens” framing: the Constitution constrains the government’s power over all persons within its jurisdiction. Citizens, lawful residents, and even undocumented immigrants are all entitled to due process. If the government treats categories of people differently, it must do so within constitutional limits. So whether we are talking about citizens or undocumented immigrants, the issue isn’t whether rights exist—it’s how the government fulfills its obligations under the Constitution.
