2026 Mid-Term Elections

The economy wasn't awful in 2024, but the people thought it was. It is worse now and directly because of Trump's actions.
...but people can be made to think it's not.

People don't understand the economy, not do they understand the President's role (or lack of a role) in it: Hence 2024.

So why would you expect people to suddenly understand Trump's role in their current suffering; Or expect them to act on it at the 2026 ballots?

Many people don't understand the economy, but that is on both sides of the political spectrum.
And the president has a great deal of control of policies that affect the economy. Biden pushed for greater spending. He extended the Pandemic largess well beyond the point that the economy reopened. He also pushed for a lot of new spending in the form of B3. While that bill was never passed, some of its spending was implemented in other legislation. All that extra spending drove up the inflation more than necessary.
Hence 2024.
The 2024 Debacle was due to more than just the economy. Biden's decline and foisting of Kamala onto the party without even a blitz primary did a lot of damage, as did Kamala's poor "vibes and memes" style of campaigning.
So why would you expect people to suddenly understand Trump's role in their current suffering; Or expect them to act on it at the 2026 ballots?
Polls show a generally good landscape for Dems this year. Of course, just like Republicans in 2022, they can shoot themselves in the foot by nominating poor candidates.

The more liberal Platner is crushing moderate Governor Mills at the moment in the polls for the Democrat place to challenge Sen. Collins. Platner is also crushing Collins in the polls as well. But Collins has pulled off a victory last time, when a Democrat won the Presidency too!
Platner is no liberal. Not in any reasonable sense of the word.
He is a far left antisemite who praised Hamas and who has a Nazi tattoo.

Since Maine seems hellbent on nominating Graham "Are We the Baddies?" Platner, I hope Collins pulls through. Nominating toxic candidates should not be rewarded in the general election.
California Governor primary looks like maybe Becerra v Hilton.
Hopefully. If Steyer prevails, California will long for the days of Gov. Goodhair, as much of a screwup as he is.
Collins is leading in Georgia to challenge Ossoff. This is one of the "easy" GOP pickups, which would be very helpful in maintaining a Senate majority. Collins has been in the House since 2023. So... not that long.
Ossoff is leading in the general election polls though.

Speaking of toxic candidates, let's look at Michigan.

The best candidate seems to be Haley Stevens, but she is in third, with Abdul El-Sayed and Mallory McMorrow battling it out. Note that a majority is not required, just a plurality, so El Sayed could emerge victorious with less than a third of the vote.

He is a fauxgressive Muslim who has campaigned with Hasan Piker, a streamer, Cenk Uygur's nephew (Latin "nepos", from which we get "nepotism"), and a notorious antisemite. Despite being a fan of Hamas, as well as of Russian and Chinese regimes, he is being hailed as the "Joe Rogan of the Left". He is very chummy with Abdul El-Sayed.

That's Piker on the left and El Sayed on the right. The photo shows the power dynamic between the two.

El Sayed has also campaigned with Amir Makled, a Hezbollah supporter. Michigan Dems nominated Makled as University of Michigan regent, again showing the rot spreading in much of the Democratic Party machine and base.

(Jasmine Crockett)
She has a mean streak and is ratchet AF. For example, she called Gov. Abbott, who uses a wheelchair, "Governor Hot Wheels".

Hot Wheels is a line of toy cars.

I really like Crockett! She’s whip smart and unafraid. I don’t like the Hot Wheels remark ( which is a recycle from Big Bang Theory re: Stephen Hawking who made occasional guest appearances) but given Abbot’s utter and complete lack of compassion for the people he supposedly supports, im
Not too upset about it.

Still lower than Biden's peak.

That does not mean it can't go higher still if things escalate in the Strait. But for now, it's about 3.6 Roentgen - not great, not terrible.

Biden's peak? That peak was caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. I don't think that history will blame the invasion on Biden. Trump is directly responsible for the current increase in cost of gas. And most likely the impending recession. Trump totally underestimated the ability of Iran to shut off the strait. He pissed off all our allies so that they won't help us reopen it. He killed the old feeble president, not understanding that the next group of Iranian leaders would be far for strategic.

Over the last year, in special elections, Republicans have been losing with larger margins, winning with smaller margins, and losing instead of winning.

Wisconsin Supreme Court 2026: Live Election Results - The New York Times
  • Chris Taylor (D) - 60.1%
  • Maria S. Lazar (R) - 39.8%
  • Total write-ins - 0.1%
CT beat ML by over 20% - that's 10% better than the poll margins.

Waukesha is a Republican-leaning suburb of Milwaukee, but this happened:
  • Alicia Halvensleben (D) - 51.2%
  • Scott Allen (R) - 48.8%
Victory by 2.4%.

Yabut for all that only ONE seat (Halvensleben) changed hands.
Complacency is a huge threat to Dems. Almost as big a threat as Republican cheating.

I suppose I should be pleased that people are calling these changes gerrymandering. Not trying to hide it under the carpet.
But it disenfranchises a segment, however small or large of the voters.
I do not understand why those who scream the loudest about gerrymandering are happy with 'their' side doing it. Somehow it becomes virtuous.

I meant "Biden's peak" in the sense of a peak that happened during his term. And whatever the reason for it was, it contributed to the sense of malaise over the economy that plagued his presidency.

Of course, things could have been much worse. Had President Sanders, Warren or Harris been elected in 2020, fracking would have been banned and that would have made dealing with supply issues stemming from Russia's invasion 1000x more difficult to handle.

There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Derec, than are dreamt of in Fox News.

A best-case scenario is a big push of construction of renewable-energy systems, something that would make fracking less necessary.

Virginia court rules in favor of Democrats on redistricting
A Virginia court ruled in favor of Democrats in a case concerning the Old Dominion’s congressional lines on Sunday, denying a last-minute Republican effort challenging Democrats’ redistricting referendum and the composition of the new House map passed by voters.

Richmond Circuit Court Judge Tracy Thorne-Begland denied a request by the Republican National Committee (RNC), Virginia GOP and others to block the results of a redistricting referendum held last week, when voters narrowly passed a set of congressional lines that gives Democrats four additional pickup opportunities in November.

The Virginia congressional delegation currently has a 6-5 Democratic edge, but the new map would give the party a 10-1 edge in November.

FTFY.

Nuclear power plants are FAR better for the environment than renewable-energy systems.

A big push of construction of renewable-energy systems isn't the best-case, despite being a better-case than fracking for fossil fuel.

Platner stands alone as Gov. Mills steps aside. Platner will face incumbent Sen. Collins who has more lives than a cat in Maine.

Personally, this says two possible things.

1) The Democrats are going to drown the US in blue in November.
2) We just lost a seat gain.

To me, Gov. Mills was the right candidate for the right state. An Independent has generally been the best we can do in New Hampshire and Maine. Maine consists of a couple cities and a lot of expensive houses, and woods. As Governor, Mills proved she could win statewide office. But Platner, a firebrand coming from nowhere said what people wanted to hear in a primary. The left-wing is tired of electing compromise all the time. And even with the party backing Mills, the people were wanting the other guy. So excitement is great, especially if coming out of reliably blue, but still moderate Maine.

BUT!!!! We've seen the right-wing get excited and/or just go out and pick the wrong person. This has cost the GOP a handful Senate seats in the past couple of decades, from Moore to Walker to O'Donnell. Having excitement needs to carry a lot of excitement to get people over a more moderate candidate, which Collins is... despite supporting the people who axed Roe v Wade, but moderate enough. Most Republicans will vote for Collins, period. So you need turnout. And while left-wing turnout can be good (see Abrams' miracles in Georgia in 2020), a state like Maine is lacking in that category of voter to get the turnout. You desperately need the moderate vote. And Platner isn't exactly the model candidate. The irony, is that GOP is advertising these posts of his, which I think oddly enough will make some lesser aware right-wing voters think he is their candidate. So maybe an offset? But add in the issue of name recognition, Platner is well behind that with Collins.

If the wave is large enough, it'll capsize Collins. But with Platner as the candidate, it may take just that. I think Gov. Mills could have won with a smaller wave.

Whatever the cause? A better question to ask is why did the oil markets panic like that with the Russian invasion of Ukraine... meanwhile show a decent amount of restraint over the Pandora's box that is the Strait of Hormuz that Netanyahu and Trump opened with Iran.
Of course, things could have been much worse. Had President Sanders, Warren or Harris been elected in 2020, fracking would have been banned and that would have made dealing with supply issues stemming from Russia's invasion 1000x more difficult to handle.
Are we even fracking that much these days? Oil needs to be above a certain level to justify the cost of fracking. The fracking boom took foot during the Obama Administration, continued through Trump, but it certainly has lightened up.
