Well, it's true; cold gasoline has a higher energy density than warm gasoline, so you get more gas per dollar if you fill up when it's cold than you do if you fill up when it is hot.

Most gas stations now store the stuff underground, though, so usually the temperature difference between day and night is minuscule.

And of course the energy per unit mass of the gasoline doesn't change, only the mass/volume ratio (it is your density, as Darth Vader might have noted).

As gas is sold by volume, you do get it at an effectively cheaper price if you buy it when it is cold.

My personal opinion is that one of the reasons Trump is so obsessed with remaking the White House, building monuments, painting the reflecting pool is that his staff/handlers/cabinet/advisors steer him in that direction because these are not important things. This is an interesting opinion piece on the NYT on why Trump has no idea what to do about Iran because Trump expects that everyone has a price and that everything is transactional but he has no idea, can't comprehend, people who are "True Believers"

But that’s wrong. Not everyone is transactional. Some people — for better and for worse — actually have beliefs that they’re willing to die for, and Trump is painfully, obviously baffled when he encounters belief like that.

It turns out that there is an immense difference between your median South American autocracy and Twelver Shi’ism, the dominant religion of the Iranian regime. Threatening death to people who are willing to die for their cause doesn’t have the same effect as threatening people who seek mainly wealth and power.

Why hasn’t Trump been able to force an end to the Ukraine war? There are true believers on both sides.

The pope’s steadfast adherence to Catholic doctrine is yet another example. One gets the sense that he’s almost amused at the idea that Trump’s bellicose rhetoric should have any influence at all on his public professions of Christian faith.

At home, Trump has obviously been flummoxed by judges who stubbornly stick to principle and seem immune to his bluster. Constitutional fidelity is alien to him. He cannot understand why the justices he appointed will not do exactly what he wants.
