What TV are you watching and how would you rate it? [Revive from FRDB]

Ripper Street, for the second go through. Matthew Macfayden's voice is good ASMR. 😀

Started watching House recently. While I like the cast, the overall effect is deja vu. It seems one episode would have sufficed. After nearly a season, every show seems the same. It's like listening to The Edge play guitar.
The interesting thing about House is the running themes underlying the series, with the internal interactions of the cast. The price to pay is the monotony of the repetition. Maybe it’s lupus?

"If we keep giving her X, we'll kill her. But if we stop, she's as good as dead." *

Also, since when do doctors break into patients' homes to conduct searches? This has happened in at least four episodes so far.

*Maybe it's lupus?"

Because everybody lies. And the only way to get the truth is to seek it for oneself . They will cure this patient whether they want it or not!

Or Lyme disease perhaps?

I tried it, but couldn't get into the main character (I was able to do that with The Wire) and the plots were repetitive and unrealistic even by tv medical program standards. With him being wrong so often, it is hard to understand how he could be so damn smug.

One would think the Insurance industry would have taken him out by season two. The exceedingly expensive treatments for several wrong diagnoses before finally finding the right one must have driven the patients' bank accounts and the insurance industry up the wall. House would have worked better as a British series, with a lot fewer episodes, so they could work on the character development without so much of the same old same old.

Newest season of The Boys.

Despite all the criticism of it by both the left and the right, it's still a good show and very entertaining. Yes, it's very political, but it always has been. The right hates it because it's a note for note reflection of Republican politics. Far leftists are disenchanted because they see the show as not being critical enough of the right.

The formula is getting a little stale though, but that can be said for nearly any show that runs for more than three seasons. I'd like to see them wrap up in this one because I think they've wrung everything they can out of it.

If you haven't seen it, I'd highly recommend giving it a shot,.

My DVDs for Monty Python's Flying Circus arrived. All seasons. I don't know when I'll get around to watching them.

I've purchased the DVDs for several classic shows over the last few months. No Idea when I'll watch them

MASH
All In the Family
Monty Python
Are you Being Served.
Faulty Towers.

I'll get to them some day.
Bit sorry you invested in the Monty Python. I loved them and The Goodies but don't feel they aged well.

Life of Brian and The Holy Grail, OTOH, will never die.

I know I've said this before but it bears repeating. DO NOT EVER mention this show in front of your parents in a family setting for the first time. That includes if you, your sister and respecting partners are closer to 50 than 40 and your parents are cracking the 80s. You still run the very real risk of some fucking idiot

(my sister)

saying the phrase "let's watch the first episode together". Game of Thrones will not save you.

Don't ask me how I know, I just fucking know.

I like how the right-wing finally caught on. Hey... wait a second...

The show isn't that good. But I can't stop watching it. Effectively there is Starlight / Huey and then Homelander. The trouble is, the character development has been rather crap the entire run of the show. No one has grown at all. They might have for a bit in an episode or maybe even part of a season, but in the end, it is the same group of hapless characters (it is not The Wire). Also, invulnerability seems to vary from time to time.

Huey's been well developed; from a do nothing wimp to a largely realistic freedom fighter who's still shocked at it all. Starlight went from starry eyed naive girl to rebelling against the system/corporation. Butcher has gone from a crude and gruff but noble fighter to someone circling the drain. Much of the same goes for the antagonists. Many went from utter sycophants to phony sycophants who have to hide their fear and growing doubts about what's going on. Night Train went from arrogant killer to giving up his life for core principles.

I think part of the reason the show's been so good is because of character development.

But like I said, it doesn't seem like there's much left to do. They're dragging things out and repeating events. It's time for resolution.

Oh, as for the right wingers, how they didn't catch onto the show by the middle of season one is as puzzling as their love for Trump... uh, Homelander.

Stargate SG1 does not hold up well. Its a bit hokey and the dialog is not very good.

Don't know how they kept a straight face.

The stoic Tilk and Carter who goes to other planets in combat wearing eye makeup.

I have no streaming services, only broadcast DTV. The scifi channel Comet broadcasts SG1 Monday-Friday.

A problem I've had with it is it seems to reuse the plot where the team gets imprisoned often, and they have to escape. It can be fun sometimes but it also can get old. There are some episodes I enjoyed though.

Apple TV is the bomb! We're watching:
1. For all mankind; 4.5/5
2. Pluribus, season 1: 5/5
3. Widow's Bay, S1 through episode 3; so far 5/5

Well, they were pretty stupid.

You would think they'd learn not to turn on alien devices, but then they'd have no plots.

Same with ST Voyager. Jayneway was always meddling and getting into trouble. Good plot devices

ST SG1 writers did invent an interesting mythology.

That isn't really being developed. He isn't all that hardened, and he is the heart of the group, period, as in the only heart other than Starlight.
Starlight went from starry eyed naive girl to rebelling against the system/corporation.
But they've exposed her as being vindictive as a pageant contestant. Again, they've been a bit inconsistent with her. Had they nixed the pageant thing, then yes, she'd be the only person (other than Homelander) that has gone anywhere.
Butcher has gone from a crude and gruff but noble fighter to someone circling the drain.
He has always been going down the drain.
Much of the same goes for the antagonists. Many went from utter sycophants to phony sycophants who have to hide their fear and growing doubts about what's going on.
The entire show, except Huey and part of Starlight are antagonists. Frenchie is one of the worst people in the entire show. The Deep has always been a weak syncophant. His current existence makes no sense. Homelander has taken out much more important people for less. Plot events just happen, sometimes to shock the viewer, sometimes just randomly, without much of any purpose. Huey being alive makes no sense. The all powerful and unstoppable guy takes out the non-supporting characters.
I think part of the reason the show's been so good is because of character development.
The character development has been inconsistent, sometimes disappearing all together. A season would wrap around and then nothing would have actually changed anywhere.

That said, I still watch it. Hard to explain why other than wanting to see how things finish (if at all) with Homelander.

Daredevil Season 2
WTF man? Overall, enjoyed the show, but... flaws. The biggest of which, the big bad brutally murders a dozen or so protestors, and Daredevil convinces the guy to go to the beach and retire for a while. This is of course, on top of everything else. Though, to me the biggest issue was the boxing match. Yes, Kingpin is supposed to be tough, but a pro-boxer is going to have muscle memory and skills. Guy in the ring had no answer to a guy who only had brute force on his side.

Granted, last time in prison, he rather quickly took it over, so maybe plan B was better overall. But it seemed quite tone deaf over all of the murder, including the former Police Chief and a surgeon.
