Republican Jadon MacCormack, who made headlines earlier this year with a slew of inflammatory, hateful remarks and social media posts, lost his primary to former Pomfret First Selectman Anthony Emilio Tuesday.
Among other comments and posts, MacCormack
called for the execution of LGBTQ people,
called Catholicism a false religion, said the
Salem witch trials were morally justified to counter the threat of witches, and
agreed with a post accusing Israel of worshipping the devil. MacCormack was the party-endorsed candidate.
In a
social media post shortly after 9 p.m., Emilio thanked supporters for the honor of representing the party in the 50th District race against five-term incumbent Democrat Pat Boyd.
“Public service is about much more than winning political points, it is about respecting every resident, listening to different perspectives, and working together to find solutions that strengthen our communities,” Emilio wrote. “As I look ahead to the general election, I will work to earn the trust of residents across the entire 50th District, regardless of party or political affiliation.”
The Associated Press called the race for Emilio as early returns showed him receiving nearly 80% of the vote. With over 80% of the precincts counted, the public results counter on the Secretary of the State’s website
showed Emilio with 298 votes to MacCormack’s 78.
Emilio was a last-minute petitioning entry into the race, after MacCormack won the party endorsement at the district convention. Shortly afterward, a social media post titled “Happy Straight Month,” made in direct response to Pride Month, contained numerous comments that drew criticism from both sides of the political aisle.
