Far-Right Victory in German State Sends a Signal to Europe

A vote in eastern Germany has given fresh momentum to hard-right parties hoping to win elections across Europe next year, analysts said.
When a far-right party won a landslide victory on Sunday in a small state in eastern Germany, its reverberations could be felt from Downing Street in London to the Élysée Palace in Paris. Rarely has the result of a regional election been viewed with such portent for the fate of democracy in Europe.

This wasn’t just any European country; it was Germany, a country that has relentlessly isolated far-right political parties since the calamity of Nazism. And it wasn’t just a strange outlier, but rather the latest step in a steady, decade-long march that has brought the far right ever closer to the fulcrum of power in Europe.

With elections scheduled across Europe next year, the striking success of the party, Alternative for Germany, could be a harbinger of further far-right victories, according to analysts, as well as a template for how they can be engineered. Its populist, anti-immigrant message echoes those of nationalist leaders in Britain, France, Italy and Spain, all countries where voters harbor many of the same grievances as those in Germany.

French voters will elect a new president next spring. An election is due in Spain by August, and in Italy by the end of next year. Far-right candidates are surging in all of them, threatening incumbents blamed for systemic problems with their countries’ economies.
Because the AfD appeared to fall just short of an outright majority, according to near-final results, it may not end up governing Saxony-Anhalt, the state where the election was held. Rival parties have vowed that they would not form a coalition government with the AfD, whose leaders have used Nazi slogans and minimized the Holocaust. The AfD is designated as a “suspected” extremist group by German intelligence, partly because the group portrays Germans of immigrant backgrounds as second-class citizens.

Worries among centrists about France, where President Emmanuel Macron will step down next spring, are no less acute. Marine Le Pen, the candidate of France’s main far-right party, the National Rally, holds a commanding lead in first-round polls, and has even finished first in recent second-round matchups. That puts her closer to power than at any time in her 14 years of seeking the presidency.

The article is supposed to be available to anyone but one of you told me that the NYT is now asking for more information before letting others read it, which is why I posted so much. But it is a long article and I'm sure we can find more information on this topic in other news sources. Things aren't looking good for Europe if this trend continues. How far will it go? What other countries will be impacted and will the US recover from our current insanity? Scary times for sure for many reasons.

What is the NY Times definition of a far right party? Border security with immigration control, safe cities, and sensible government spending did not used to be called "far right". But those values which used to be called moderate values are now called "far right" by most of the liberal media these days.

Yeah, sure, those are the things that today’s far right stands for. Such mild, moderate fascist racists.

Europe has been tilting back and forth on whether they want to return to the glory days of 1920s/1930s Nationalism. I'm certain it is "woke" that is to blame.

New York City is perhaps the safest city in the U.S. now and it is FILLED with immigrants, especially TONS of Muslims. Go NYC!

Just wait until global warming REALLY kicks in. ‘There will be vast numbers of climate migrants moving north, mostly from the brown countries that white racist fascists hate. That will really piss off the Nazis and fascists.

Storm clouds are gathering in Europe. The natives are waking up to the islamic invasion happening around them.

You’ve bought the sanitized brand propaganda that is being spread by the musk-Thiel chatbot armies. Good Boy.

The right wing unity is admirable though. Atheist and agnostic conservalibertarians happily march arm in arm with Doug Wlison types in support of the Trump GOP, AfD nativists, etc… I guess once the big money found the right buttons to push…

Right wing and sensible government spending should never be put together.

25% of the total national debt, which it is the highest it has ever been, is attributable to Trump.

No other party will form a coalition with the AfD.

Why does everyone have to learn the hard way? Can't they look to others for what doesn't work or do they think they have a special plan that will work. Don't these fucktards want Dexit? Ally themselves with a proven loser in Russia?

The AfD are popular in EAST Germany. The bit that wasn't de-nazified after the war, but that instead went straight from one totalitarian shithole to another.

Polling in Sachsen-Anhalt and Thuringia are a concern for Germany and Germans (particularly In the East), and the replacement of moderate right wing support with support for outright fascism across the democratic world is a concern too - but it's not (yet) time to be alarmed about Germany.

I am still a LOT more worried about the USA, than about anywhere in Europe.

Peinliche Panne: Merz halbiert versehentlich falsche Partei

"Embarrassing goof: Merz accidentally halves the wrong Party".

That is related to his earlier (2018) statement that he would be able to get back so many AfD voters back to the CDU that it's support would drop by half.

I guess he accidentally divided by half instead ...

Anyway, AfD managed to get 39 seats and thus missed majority of 42 seats. But there is no other stable costellation. You'd have to herd everybody from center-right to far-left (including the Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht, the splitter party from "Die Linke") in order to get a 44 seat majority. I doubt that will work.

There are also Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern elections on 9/20, and both are in the East.

They are especially popular in East Germany. But it's not like hardly anybody votes for them in the West. In this year's Landtagswahl in Baden-Würtenberg AfD got respectable 18.8% and finished third, above SPD which collapsed and barely got into the Landtag. In Rheinland-Pfalz they also finished third, with 19.5%. In both cases, they pretty much doubled their vote from last elections.

Do not forget that what is "right" in Europe is "center" in the US, and what is "center" in Europe is "left" in the US. Or so I've been told.
That's correct; And what is "far right" in Europe is "right" in the US.

Which is why everyone who is horrified by Trump, is also (so far, needlessly) worried by AfD, Reform, National Rally, One Nation etc., etc.

We saw all this ninety years ago, but that time around the USA fascist far right were a marginal (though well funded) group, whereas this time they are in control of the Whitehouse and both chambers of Congress.

It still ended in world war.

Y’all have fun. I’ll be dead by the time everyone decides which side of what they’re actually on.

This is true to an extent. But an outdated take in others. "Far Right" politics drinks from the same social media trough the whole world over these days, spreading many of the same tropes, memes, "facts" and shock stories from Moscow to Berlin to Seattle. Here in California, the current Republican candidate for governor is a former Englishman, once part of Cameron's inner circle but now turned Trump lackey. He has a posh accent, but no ideas or plans that would alarm any American neo-Nazi. It's not like his outlook is all that different as near as I can tell, you're just allowed to say more things out loud here.

Meanwhile, Austria: “Don’t look at us this time.”
