which makes it a doubly shame that it's more or less tanked at the boss office.

Pacific rim 2/10
But why, oh why, did they bother with dialogue? The story, such ridiculous idiocy. They´d been better off skipping the story all together. The film is about massive robots smashing up monsters. Why make it more complicated than that? What´s not to understand? Why explain anything? The talking just hurt my brain.
The only reason I suffered through this ridiculous film was because it´s the favourite movie of a girl I´m bonking right now. Favourite film of all time.... lol.

that bothered me too - pacific rim is a movie guilty of one of the worst of film sins to me: going out of its way, totally unnecessarily, to create glaring plot holes and illogical situations where there don't HAVE to be any.
there's a certain amount of "just go with it" BS that i expect from my action spectacle films, but PR went way over that line and conjured up idiocy where a much better alternative scenario was just as possible, or where nothing said at all would have been preferable.
after having seen the immaculate glory that is mad max: fury road... i now wish i could see a pacific rim written and directed by george miller.

I remember that movie coming out and thinking it'd be awesome, as an adolescent. I never actually saw scenes of the film for twenty years. I think it was the inspiration for The Expendables.

While it holds few surprises for most viewers, it is very well-executed, with attractive and charismatic leads in Romain Duris and Vanessa Paradis. Worth a look.

I saw Gone Girl last week, and I almost thought Ben Affleck could act in it - but the acting he did was to be for the most part be a guy who was way too laid back for the situation. I assume that Fincher is a good director for getting acting skills out of actors.
I am trying to imagine others actors past or present who would be very good for the role. Maybe Gary Cooper. Robert Mitchum would be interesting. Or Burt Lancaster. Going a bit more recent, a 35 year old Michael Douglas.

November Man, 6/10: Starring Pierce Brosnan as some sort of super, maverick CIA agent that finds himself at odds with his bosses over a CIA operation from previous years. A familiar plot in these types of action movies. Watchable but not particularly interesting.

I never liked the "giant robots punching stuff" subgenre of anime. I expected to not care for Pacific Rim, and suffice it to say that the movie met my expectations.
However, I can understand the appeal.
Lots of people loved those old Japanese giant monster movies, or the Japanese giant superhero television shows, or the Japanese giant robot television cartoons. Clearly, the movie was meant to be a nostalgia kick for them, and the filmmakers probably didn't give a crap if people like me liked the movie. I'm actually OK with that as long as no one makes me watch it again.
PS -- You're having sex with a woman who is a nerd. Enjoy it. Being in a relationship with another nerd inevitably means dealing with the fact that they like different nerdy things than you do. It's just how it is. If I were dating a woman with a kaiju obsession, she would have to contend with my Ghost in the Shell obsession. It all evens out.

I´d say the problem with Pacific Rim is the budget. The charm of all the Kaijufilms is the fact that they´re so incredibly crappy. These are people making due with what they have and hilarity ensues. When they made the first Godzilla movie they wanted to make a Japanese King Kong, but couldn´t afford stop motion techniques. So they get a guy in latex suit. Also, ill-fitting suit, since the guy originally intended to wear it left the production. They couldn´t afford another suit. All this comes across and I can´t help but love them for trying.
The sleekness of Pacific Rim turns it into a snoozefest. Why bother having A-list actors deliver b-movie lines?

i have to disagree to an extent that the sleekness was the problem - and once again i'm going to turn to mad max as my comparison point to explain why.
you can have an incredibly simple premise with big actors tossing out mostly garbled nonsense dialogue surrounded by a big budget action spectacle, and have it be THE MOST AMAZING GOD DAMN THING (aka mad max: fury road) as long as you just write a decent, internally consistent screenplay that has a halfway decent structure and doesn't go too far out of its way to be utterly pants-on-head retarded.
that is why PR is an utter failure: because its screenplay is TERRIBLE, it's miserably logically inconsistent, and the structure is an absolute mess.
"giant robots punching giant monsters" is to me an inherently awesome premise, i'm on board with the idea itself, but PR was about the worst executed disaster of a piece of shit film (that wasn't intentionally so) that i have seen in a very long time.

Like the first in the series, this one is largely for the kids, but has some intermittent entertainment value for adults as long as you aren't in too demanding a mood. It's not really a 6/10 movie, except for the fact that Amy Adams automatically adds at least one point to the score of any movie she has a sizable part in.

I´m actually terrified of watching the new Mad Max. Mad Max 2 is one of my favourite movies of all time. It´s so wonderfully subversive. It´s basically a gay BDSM film without actual penises. And gay couples showing affection to each other and everything. It´s got hints all over it. Some subtle... some not subtle at all. It´s like they went to a gay BDSM-club to look for actors and let them wear the same clothes. It´s got gender bending, and feminist issues. It´s an incredibly brave move. And this was in a time when it was NOT-OK-AT-ALL. It worked because it was too out there. It went right over the mainstream viewers head.
I´m afraid that the new Mad Max won´t be as subversive or interesting. Mad Max 1 & 2 were great. Mad Max 3 was shit. The big budget killed it. The sleekness of it and high production value prevented them from taking risks storywise. So they didn´t and it sucked. They dropped all the gay stuff and most of the BDSM and focused on the teenage boy appeal, ie widest possible appeal. That made it uninteresting.
I´m afraid Mad Max will only be an action movie. Is it? So far all I´ve seen is that it is. I would find that tragic and sad and I would walk out. Possibly while composing a hate mail to Miller accusing him of destroying what was best of my childhood. Yes. Strong opinions.

jupiter ascending. it was awful - the plot was ridiculous, the female lead unbelievable, etc.....and channing tatum with the pointed ears and eyeliner - smokin' hot. i watched it twice.
If that's how you feel then you definitely shouldn't see the new Mad Max film. You will walk out.
On second thought, watch it at home; that way, when you walk out it will be funny.
