MOSCOW (AP) — Russian authorities have burned more than 50 books and pulled more than 500 other volumes from college libraries on the grounds they contain sentiments "alien to Russian ideology."

The books, most of them humanities textbooks, were published with money from the Soros Fund, which in November was declared an "undesirable agent" and forced to stop its work in Russia.

The books were removed from libraries in two colleges in the northwestern Komi region and some were later burned in the school's courtyard.

I rather like George Soros. He has done a lot of good things.
His hand in the devaluation of the British pound was unconscionable. Treating a country's currency like it was a plaything.

On September 16, 1992, Black Wednesday, Soros's fund sold short more than $10 billion in pounds,[36] profiting from the UK government's reluctance to either raise its interest rates to levels comparable to those of other European Exchange Rate Mechanism countries or to float its currency.
Finally, the UK withdrew from the European Exchange Rate Mechanism, devaluing the pound. Soros's profit on the bet was estimated at over $1 billion.[44] He was dubbed "the man who broke the Bank of England".[45] The estimated cost of Black Wednesday to the UK Treasury was £3.4 billion.[46]
On October 26, 1992, The Times quoted Soros as saying: "Our total position by Black Wednesday had to be worth almost $10 billion. We planned to sell more than that. In fact, when Norman Lamont said just before the devaluation that he would borrow nearly $15 billion to defend sterling, we were amused because that was about how much we wanted to sell."

Well, the British government takes a lot of the blame for their reluctance to act when they should probably have done so.
If Soros was smart enough to take advantage of the situation, don't put all the blame on him.

Just to clarify, this is pretty isolated and weird incident. Yes, there are plenty of idiots in Russia. US does not have monopoly on them.

As long as President of United States says "Russian economy is in shambles and it is good" expect sporadic anti-american actions here and there.

Ya, people burning books is always the other guy's fault. Sort of like how those damn Jews were getting all up in the Germans' faces and provoking them.

That is a lame excuse for engaging in censorship and book-burning.

The Russian authorities are unbelievably stupid if they don't appreciate the negative political symbolism associated with censoring books on ideological grounds. The local officials simply dialled the stupid up to 11 when they decided that burning the books was a good way to carry out their orders.

We burned the Germans books (WWI), the Germans burned our books (WWII), everyone loves burning books. There is no viable excuse for it... unless it is that crap by Toni Morrison.

That was not an excuse.
Once again, these are not central authorities. These are some idiots at some god-forgotten college.
As I said there is fair amount spontaneous anti-americanism in Russia nowdays. But when presidential candidates promise shooting russian planes in Syria down, and laughing at Russian economic troubles, what do you expect?

I merely provided context. Yes, these people are idiots. But was it smart for Obama to express his satisfaction with Russian economy having troubles?

Well, perhaps the Russian people need to nut the fuck up and concentrate more on what they think about themselves as opposed to basing their sense of self-worth on what other people think of them.

Obama is a nice man, but they can't live their lives hoping for his validation.

Perhaps Obama should nut the fuck and stop trying to score political points using Russia's troubles?

We're talking about the Russians. They're the ones with no internal sense of self-worth who are basing their identity and actions on whether or not a man values them. Obama being a jerk is no excuse for them acting out and hoping that he'll notice and care about their cry for help and validation and then maybe change how he acts because deep down they're really, really sure that he's a good man who loves them as much as they love him.

If the Russian people want to be values and respected, they need to find it within themselves to be valued and respected because of what they do themselves, not because of what some guy thinks about what they do.

It has nothing to do with self-worth, I don't know why are you bringing it up. Common sentiment in Russia is that US is responsible for all troubles. And to tell you the truth there is a lot to this theory.

Well maybe the Russians should lay off the vodka, get their heads out of their asses, and realize that most of their troubles have to do with the neo-czarist, former KGB-agent dictator they have.

What you said in your second sentence contradicts your first sentence. They are blaming the US for everything that's wrong with them instead of looking to themselves and they are acting out in the hopes that Papa Obama will notice them and give them a hug and let them know that he thinks they're all special snowflakes.

What I'm saying is that they don't need Obama's approval in order to feel special. The only person who's approval they need is the person they see when they look in the mirror.

Edit - By that second paragraph, I meant that they need their own approval. I wasn't talking about getting the approval of the FSB agent who's monitoring them from the secret room behind their mirror. I apologize if that was unclear.
