A Dutch woman is being detained in Qatar on suspicion of adultery after she told police she had been raped.

The 22-year-old, who was on holiday, was drugged in a Doha hotel and woke up in an unfamiliar flat, where she realised she had been raped, her lawyer says.

She was arrested in March on suspicion of having sex outside of marriage. She is due to appear in court on Monday.

The alleged rapist is also being held, but says the sex had been consensual.

A Dutch foreign ministry spokeswoman said the woman, who she named as Laura, had been arrested but not yet been charged.

:(

The woman had gone dancing at a hotel in Doha where alcohol was allowed, "but when she returned to the table after the first sip of her drink... she felt very unwell" and realised she had been drugged, her lawyer Brian Lokollo told Dutch broadcaster NOS-Radio1.

Her next memory was waking up in an unfamiliar apartment where she "realised to her great horror that she had been raped," Mr Lokollo added.

The woman may also be charged with an alcohol-related offence, news website Doha News reported.
It is an offence to drink alcohol or be drunk in public in Qatar, although alcohol is allowed at certain hotels and expatriates can obtain a permit for purchasing alcohol.

In 2013, a Norwegian woman in neighbouring United Arab Emirates was given a 16-month prison sentence for perjury, extramarital sex and drinking alcohol after she told police she had been raped.
She was later pardoned and allowed to return to Norway.

As bad as it is in the U.S., it could certainly be worse :(

I really don't understand why any Western non-muslims would want to vacation there

I don't either, to be honest. I think it would be a beautiful country to visit, but there is a lifetime of beautiful countries to visit without the risks associated there.

Tens of thousands more idiot Westerners will visit and stay a while for the 2022 World Cup, a country where the persecution of non-Christians is rated as 'severe', immigrants are tricked (or trafficked) into labouring under slave conditions, the death penalty for gays, and of course everything else you'd expect under an Islamic theocracy.

It's the moral responsibility of fans and players to boycott that World Cup, but they won't.

No, they won't. And they'll send the world selfies showing them doing all kinds of fun shit.

But damn, what a statement to the theocracies AND FIFA it would be if there were mass boycotts, although to quote you, "...but they won't."

No, they won't, though I agree they should.

Who says they are still keeping the World Cup? The people that made the deal are going to prison.

I'd be pleasantly surprised if it was taken away from Qatar, but given that FIFA seems to select host countries only from among human rights luminaries*, I'll believe it when I see it.

*It should be noted that I have not once used the term 'human rights luminaries' non-ironically.

But we could hope, can't we? Such a move might have a chance at doing some real good.

Is that within the realm of realistic possibility?

The U.S. should get it. We don't have to build a damn thing. Or some other country that will incur negligible costs. Mexico could do it. Or dare I say that Mexico and the U.S. could share it. But that doesn't make for a catchy name and it would set soccer back several generations here.

"My kids ain't playin' no goddamn Obama-ball!"

Maybe they should practice boycotting the 2018 World Cup in Russia in order to get it right for 2022.

Qatar is not really suitable for tourism. It's modernization was mainly the building of large hypermarkets.

Confirming what I've suspected for a long time: most of the time when you hear westerners telling you they are taking a trip or "vacation" to Qatar, what they're ACTUALLY doing is laundering money.

Foreigners can drink in hotel bars, but any locals caught drunk in the streets are flogged if found guilty. (Saves a fine I suppose).

Like I said, those people are going to jail. The logistical problems with Qatar can be used as the excuse to leave... after giving them some money to make up for building stadiums they'll never use.

Sadly, there will likely be nothing that indicates their human rights record had anything to do with moving the World Cup to the US or Europe.
