Dutch woman arrested in Qatar after making rape claim

The latest news from Qatar us the women in question has been deported. I guess it is an improvement over flogging or stoning.

A Dutch woman who spent three months in custody in Qatar after reporting that she was raped is to be deported having been found guilty of adultery.

The 22-year-old from Utrecht was given a one-year prison sentence by a Qatari court, suspended for three years. She was not present at the hearing. The woman was fined 3,000 riyal (£600).
The man she accused of attacking her, a Syrian national, was sentenced to 140 lashes for having extramarital sex and drinking alcohol. He was not charged with rape.

Well I guess that's one way for them to pretend there is no rape in their country. Sickening.

I'd be pleasantly surprised if it was taken away from Qatar, but given that FIFA seems to select host countries only from among human rights luminaries*, I'll believe it when I see it.
Even without the human rights record Qatar is a terrible place to hold the World Cup. The climate is too hot and the country itself is so small, the entire population would fit into the stadiums they are building for the tournament.

Confirming what I've suspected for a long time: most of the time when you hear westerners telling you they are taking a trip or "vacation" to Qatar, what they're ACTUALLY doing is laundering money.
Why don't they just but a car wash? Or a laser tag.

The U.S. should get it. We don't have to build a damn thing.
True. There are enough new handegg stadiums that could be adapted at minimal cost. I would not mind catching a game at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium for example.

Or some other country that will incur negligible costs. Mexico could do it.
They'd be like any other country that would have to build/renovate a number of stadiums. If you want to do it quickly and at minimal cost a recent host is your best bet. Or a country that already has a sufficient number of newish high capacity venues like the US.

Or dare I say that Mexico and the U.S. could share it.
While countries sharing the tournament has been done once before (Japan/South Korea), both Mexico and US have hosted alone before.

This is progress.
Floggings are frequent for drunken locals.
The Floggings may have been more for the drinking than the rape (sorry extra marital sex).

My only question is why she would choose Qatar as a holiday resort? It's a desert with some shopping malls, and hotels.

Ok, so the real story was this:
This girl said she was going on holiday with a girlfriend to France, but in reality went to Qatar. She and her girlfriend (in any case her pretty hot girlfriend) were high class escorts going there for some big money (think over $1000 an hour).
Apparently she broke into an argument with a customer and this escalated. Her girlfriend tried to discourage her from going to the police, but she still did.

Police did what they always do in Qatar: Sex outside marriage is forbidden, so both are guilty. Family of the guy tried to persuade the girl to marry her so called rapist so they would both get dismissed (seems to be common practice in Qatar to prevent being jailed; after your release you divorce again), but girl refused (or rather her mum, because that seems to be mandatory in Qatar).

Interesting, what would have been the punishment for her being a prostitute?

Tens of thousands more idiot Westerners will visit and stay a while for the 2022 World Cup, a country where the persecution of non-Christians is rated as 'severe', immigrants are tricked (or trafficked) into labouring under slave conditions, the death penalty for gays, and of course everything else you'd expect under an Islamic theocracy.

It's the moral responsibility of fans and players to boycott that World Cup, but they won't.

No, they won't, though I agree they should.

I agree, based on the slave labor alone. It truly boggles the mind, particularly in light of the Zola concerns and discussions or moving the games. Of course the games won't be moved but there has been more general concern about Zika-- because it could potentially have negative effects on competitors and more importantly: fans. Why care about slave labor? They'll be long gone by the time the games begin. It's easy to ignore human rights restrictions, especially if you are rich enough to travel for such events.

No gays in Iran, no rape in Qatar. The Middle East is doing well.

The US could pull off the World Cup with probably 6 months head notice (heck we are holding the 100th Anniversary of Copa America right now). The US was in the running and probably should have won it outright. I don't think it is a coincidence that FIFA fell after the US lost the bid.

A Dutch woman is being detained in Qatar on suspicion of adultery after she told police she had been raped.

The 22-year-old, who was on holiday, was drugged in a Doha hotel and woke up in an unfamiliar flat, where she realised she had been raped, her lawyer says.

She was arrested in March on suspicion of having sex outside of marriage. She is due to appear in court on Monday.

The alleged rapist is also being held, but says the sex had been consensual.

A Dutch foreign ministry spokeswoman said the woman, who she named as Laura, had been arrested but not yet been charged.
Honestly, it is hard to contemplate why a woman would lie about rape in a country where a rape victim is held as having committed a crime.

So, there are two issues here. First is the treatment of women in Qatar. The second is what happened in THIS case. Was she on holiday or an escort, which is a fine job to have, I make no judgment on that.

The discussion of what happened in THIS case should not be filtered through an agenda or a narrative. Why are so many of us (me included) here addicted to narratives? So damn annoying!

Why is her speculated line of work an issue? I had not even heard a suggestion that she was an escort until your post. Why did you bring that up?

We are 'addicted' to narratives because we wish to understand events, which are often best understood, made to make sense, by understanding the people, the circumstances, what shaped the events. At least partially to figure out if/how this might have a personal impact. Could this have been me or someone I love? How can I avoid this thing happening (if it's bad)? How can I get this thing (if it's good)?

Toni, Funkytrip from the Netherlands has claimed this, but has not posted his source which I would guess is written in Dutch.

I am in no way minimizing the treatment of women by wanting to get the ACTUAL facts of this case known.

Do you not want to know if she was an escort instead of a vacationer?

Is there any source for this information? Even if it is in Dutch?

because the sentence was lesser than the actual crime she committed.. prostitution.

To tell the truth, I cannot see how her profession is an issue. It is an extremely common, age old tactic, to suggest that rape victims are really disgruntled prostitutes. As if prostitutes aren't often rape victims. As if rapists are more truthful than prostitutes.

But of course, in many places, a rape victim is as good as a prostitute, once she's been had. And in fact, rape is often a tool to 'convince' victims to do it for money. Because why not? They're obviously garbage now.

Emotion over reason

How?

If she was raped, it doesn't matter what her job is. Further, they didn't arrest her for prostitution. They arrested her for adultery.

Qatar and the UAE are rampant with prostitution because the the the locals and expats) can't keep their brains in their trousers There is no proof here that this was anything to do with prostitution. Considering she reported being drugged and waking up in a strange place this would imply that what happened was not by consent.
