Why do I meet so many people who actually think this? Is is just fun to say if you're not liberally inclined?

Or do they think it's like Atlantis or something like that?

Or is the San Andreas Fault something mysterious and full of woo?

Or is it something else?

I live on the border of Pennsyltucky so there are lots of folks around here one could classify as redneck. So is it just an educational thing?

Perhaps it's just a silly meme that does the rounds. I live in the San Fernando Valley and every so often you hear people looking forward to having a beach front property when the "big one" hits, meaning the San Andreas will split causing a good chunk of the CA coast to split. I don't think anyone really believes it, just a bit of idle chit chat.

People say this in California. I think it is meant to be sort of sardonic, or grimly cynical. "Well, we'll do such and such before the Big One hits and we all fall into the Ocean".

Yes. Be afraid. Bad stuff will certainly happen in the land of 72F winter / 80F summer. Any minute now, attack from North Korea, or earthquake. Not to mention the constant lack of thunderstorms (ok, that bugs me, I loved Pittsburgh thunderstorms... phenomenal), and people don't smoke cigarettes everywhere.

sigh.

Recently, since two or three years ago, several earthquakes have been shaking the lands surrounding the Ring of Fire.

Unfortunately, alarmist guys might be right at this time, when earthquakes have been increasing in number and magnitude. However I see nothing unusual about those earthquakes and activity of volcanoes because that entire area has been named the "ring of fire" for the same reason.

North Korea will nuke California and set off an earthquake that will sink the state into the pacific.

Staying with the OP.
Would California separating from the rest of the USA raise or lower the USA's collective IQ?

That probably depens on post-independence migration patterns.

If rural and on average less educated populations were to emigrate en masse to the 49 states because they don't want to live under no goddamn coastal liberals while urban folk in the rest of the country would grasp the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to emigrate to a country that's run by a sane government and otherwise pretty much like home, it might lower the USA's collective IQ quite significantly.

Without migration, the effect would probably be negligible.

Maybe that's why idiot rednecks love Trump so much. Being the violent racists they are, they want CA and all its Mexicans and all its tolerant (aka "liberal") to die. They know that Trump's infantile and mentally unstable tweets and policies toward North Korea have drastically increased the odds of a nuclear attack, and they like that.

Just kidding, Trump supporters are way too stupid to grasp how Trump has increased nuclear threat and terrorists threats against the US.

You don’t need to die. Just float away.

The fact stated in my last sentence shows why it isn't at all surprising that you think the continents are floating.
Conservatism and scientific literacy are like oil and water.

I lived in San Anselmo (North Bay area) before moving to Colorado. Woke up one morning, went out on the deck, and the whole ground felt strangely like styrofoam. Right then and there I decided to move.
I never thought "Gee, this state is going to fall into the ocean", but having been through several earthquakes in The City (San Fran) I was keenly aware of the San Andreas and other faults, and had no interest in going through the aftermath of a major quake. The feeling that morning was the last straw.
