17% of Americans think interracial marriage is immoral

What makes you think "Democrat"="Liberal"?
In the modern American parlance, "liberal" doesn't mean what it means in the rest of the world. It basically means, left, but not far left. Which is close to being congruent with Democratic Party.

How much of this is black women upset about black men going with white Beckys?

The results would probably be different depending how the question is asked.

I'm betting most people would not think sexual relationships between 2 different races are immoral. But marriage is about bringing children into the world. Bringing biracial children into the world changes everything with regards to morals. I can honestly see how it is not moral to expose a child to the rasism that they will experience by not being accepted by either race after they are born.

Today on "Working Real Hard to Make Racism Look 'Moral'"

What's worth noting is that contrary to what some white liberals believe, the number for Democrats is not zero. If you haven't already noticed this, then you haven't been paying attention when in the company of other white American liberals. I'd draw a comparison between this and Christians vs atheists on the topic of racism. Christians are statistically more likely to be racist, but this does not mean all Christians are overtly racist nor does it mean that no atheists are.

Would people really be surprised by this? I bet you no black American would be, in the slightest.

The irony being blacks are more probable to be among the 12% of Democrats opposed to interracial marriage.
In fact, 18% of blacks said it was immoral, while only 17% of whites did, which includes the 28% opposed among Republican that are overwhelming white.
If we do the math, that works out to something like only 7% of Democrat whites being opposed to it, versus about 18% of Democratic blacks opposed to it.
Or an uncomfortably high number of whites verses blacks, of which both are backwards.

Of course it's wrong!

Homo sapiens should not engage in sexual relations with neanderthals!

Even so, the poll considers categories by party identification and by ideological identification. Among those who identify as "liberals", the percentage of people who find interracial marriage immoral is lower (6%). Then again, the OP also considers the percentages of Democrats, even if it uses the word "liberals".

Correction: Sorry, it's 6%, not 9%.

Agreed. Don't ask me how I know this, but trust me when I say that it's the kind of thing which really pisses off the museum staff.

Any port in a storm, including Denisovans.

I missed the part where they also asked for ideological self-identification. I guess I was going with Underseer's conflation of the two. Although, the intersection of the two sets is quite large.

Which is irrelevant when one is talking about Democrats. Blue dog democrats are not "left". There are plenty of centrist Democrats. And the "intersection" of "left" with "Democrats" is not as large as you make it out to be..

Guess which party is more likely to find interracial marriage wrong? The answer will surprise almost no one, except perhaps for some portion of Republicans who believe that liberals are the "real racists."

article said:
There was a bit of a divide along party lines on the subject, with 28 percent of Republicans and just 12 percent of Democrats replying that interracial marriage was morally wrong.

Gosh, it sounds like you're trying to change the subject.

No, he is pointing out that you are making a baseless assumption that the Democrats who oppose interracial marriage are "white liberals". Not only is that baseless, it is refuted by the very study you cite which shows that black Democrat are more than twice as likely to oppose inter-racial marriage than white Democrats.

In his defense, there is a standing meme by Trausti and Derec in the forum that blacks are racist too. It's part of their #ThemToo movement. What you're bringing up might or might not be a separate topic but certainly worthy of some thought. So what are the stats?

Nor anyone who lives in (or at least grew up in) the South. Remember 'Dixiecrats' and the 'Solid South'? Used to be that the Democrats would have been the most statistically racist, no question.

Oh, I'm pretty sure the residents of Detroit and Chicago and Baltimore and DC are... aware.

And yes, reticence to intermarriage is not restricted to people of one skin color. Don't know what point y'all think you're making, of course it does. Come to point, were I a black parent living in one of our more segregated cities, I would be nervous about my child marrying into an all white family and neighborhood. I wouldn't think they were doing something immoral, but I would worry a lot about their well-being.

I find the statistic kind of encouraging. What would that statistic have been at the time of Loving? Ten years after that? Ten years after that? Etc. In other words, it shows progress.

I would have thought it much higher, given the U.S.'s current political shitfest.

You're never going to get 100% agreement on anything. For example, you'll find a certain percentage of Americans who think that slavery should still exist. So the fact that 18% are still ass-backward on this is relatively positive.

If it's immoral to bring children into this world because they may face racism or discrimination by other people, then you're basically saying that minorities shouldn't have babies.

The difference is that a biracial baby stands a chance not to be accepted by either race. Thats not the case with a minority baby.

Meh - you don't have to worry about that. True racists don't care about percentages - you be a nigger if they can tell you're not 100% lily white. IME, black folk are quite accepting of those "polluted" with white blood, though the reverse is ... not so much.
Personally I have always had an almost irrational attraction to bi-racial/multi-racial women. An evolutionary biologist once told me it's a built-in evolutionary preference for "hybrid vigor". I just think a lot of them are unusually beautiful.

That's not a "meme", it's reality.

Memes and reality are not mutually exclusive. Regardless as to whether a person thinks it is true or not, it still does remain a meme that you transmit to others in the forum.

If you do the maths without ignoring the fact that whites make up 70% of the total population while blacks constitute 12% you will discover that your previous result is way off the mark.

Using data from the 2016 National Popular Vote Tracker, the Economist/YouGov Poll the article in the OP is based on (scroll down to page 92) and How we voted — by age, education, race and sexual orientation I calculated that 9.8% of Democrat whites and 32.7% of Republican whites are opposed to interracial marriage.

Those results are very likely inaccurate as well. For one thing I assumed - as you did too - that the percentages of Blacks, Latinos and Others remained constant across the board. That is an unlikely scenario, but we do not have access to stats showing whether that is the case or not, and anyway, I enjoy messing about with spreadsheets.

Personally, I am pleasantly surprised by the overall figures. Guess Who's Coming to Dinner is not quite as topical as when the movie was released 50 years ago.

Here in Georgia, mixed race children are extremely common although most people identify them as black. I have a white female friend who is married to a black man, and she confided in me that she gets angry at her husband sometimes because he identifies their children as black. I told her to tell him that are "blackish", after the TV show by the same name. I am married to a third generation Arabic American. My late mother in law didn't like that her sons married non Arabic women. It was more about culture than about ethnicity. She eventually bonded with me because we both grew up in New Jersey. Jersey girls are their own breed. :D And speaking of racism and segregation, most of New Jersey is far more racist and segregated than any of the southern cities I've lived in. White people in NJ are just a lot more subtle about their racism. There are many towns in northern NJ that are all or almost all white. Imo, the south has progressed far more than the north when it comes to racist tendencies. I'm not saying that we don't have racists here, but there are racists everywhere in the US.

I don't remember the name of the black comedian who is married to a white women, who said that some of his friends didn't like that he married a white woman. He told them not to worry because all of his kids were considered black. I don't know if it's because of the old racist rule about "one drop of black blood" or what, but for the most part, mixed race black/white people are identified as black. I tend to think that being blackish is considered very cool these days and some folks choose this identity even when they have more European DNA as compared to their African DNA. Anyway, I don't think that black people who don't like mixed race relationships feel that way for moral reasons. I think it has more to do with culture, just as it was with my late mother in law.
