The world was stunned today when it found out Google+ still exists! One of the very few failures of Google to reinvent Facebook, a data aggregating website that tracks users in very unethical ways (wait... how did you know that guy who works at another company was someone I have worked with on a project... I don't post about work or who I work for on Facebook! In fact, I don't even have any co-workers as friends on Facebook!)

Regardless, apparently Google+ was voyeuristic and exposed itself to who the fuck knows. Google announced it was shutting it down because hackers could get the data for free instead of paying for it, which completely defeated the purpose of having it. Google noted it would have shut down Google+, which has an estimate 43 active users, earlier, however, they had lost track of the server that ran the site, and just couldn't really muster enough of a fuck to track it down.

I was still working for Google when G+ was rolled out internally, to great fanfare and claims that it was a facebook-killer. There was a very uncomfortable silence and a few embarrassed laughs. It was always awful, and everyone knew it. IIRC, it was a 20% time project that should never have been sanctioned.

And the people at MySpace cackle silently as their sinister plan to regain social media dominance takes another step forward.

Oh! I remember Google+! I think I might still be friends with RayJ there. The only times I remembered Google+ existed after a brief fling with it was on the occasional notification of posts from friends for a while, and then no notifications for... wow, years now.

If only they'd waited a few more decades to do anything to remind us of Google+ because by then we'd all be like, ooooooh, blast from the past!

It’s the only social media I used and I’m going to miss it. I found it fun to pass the time and see others thoughts and opinions. Whenever I heard it was a ghosttown I referred to it as the worlds most haunted ghost town. It seems I was wrong.

Eh, Google has many abandoned ghost projects.

I still kind of miss the old google dashboard, with all the little widgets. Used to be my home screen.

I had the general impression that most Google+ users worked for Google or one of their competitors.

I still use Google+ from time to time, mostly to argue with theists.

I think you should use Facebook again from time to time.

My account was canceled because I posted an anti-Nazi image, which I am told is against Facebook's community standards.

Obviously, I got reported by some butthurt conservative or theist who managed to report me enough times to trigger the automated moderation. No sane human moderator would ban someone for posting an anti-Nazi meme, then tell them that being anti-Nazi is against their community standards.

I could contest the ban, which would probably trigger intervention by a human moderator.

But the thing is, after years of reading articles in the tech press about people raising privacy concerns with respect to social media, and oh yeah, Facebook inadvertently undermining democracy because they're not very discriminating about who they sell what to, I kind of decided that Facebook can take their community standards and shove it right up their automated moderation system.

Your account looks normal from here. They keep your profile page active but ban you from signing in or what? If so, I'd damn well be fighting about it. If they want you gone from FB, they need to deactivate your page or remove it or something. Fuck that noise.

I can deactivate my account, but first I would have to protest the ban and get my account reinstated so that I can log in and change the settings on my account.

I say fuck it and fuck them. Being anti-Nazi is against their community standards, and oh yeah, they're a threat to democracy and American sovereignty.

Hey, I was actually able to log in for a split second. Now I'm banned for applying conservative arguments about non-white people to white people. Still can't deactivate my account.

Anyone who wants to connect with my on Twitter can shoot me a private message, although after my initial fascination with Twitter, I'm using it only sporadically.

Ah, I was able to deactivate my account even though I'm banned. Cool.

I guess that's good at least. But why FB would ban you is beyond me. *I'M* still there, after all. I've had posts deleted a couple of times, but that's it. You must have had some really vindictive shits in your friends list.

Jebus, trying to have an argument in Facebook is like trying to scuba dive in a bath tub. Yes, it can be technically done, but it isn't going to be worth the hassle.

I posted in discussion groups that include a lot of conservative Christians. I'm pretty sure there's a large number of them going through my post history reporting every single thing.

The fact that I was being "hunted" like that by conservatives means that I was probably getting to people and getting under their skin.
