My computer did a Win10 update while I was away. It's been sitting like this for more than 3 hours now. I guess I'll let it sit overnight if necessary. But if it's still like this in the morning what do I do?

As a note the twirly dots are twirling.

Posting on my Tablet.

like most things, deprive it of electricity hit it a few times then restore power

I'll add a few details. It's a Dell notebook. Inspiron 15 something. Got it with Win7 just a few months before Win10 came out.updated to Win10 as soon as I could. It's not really old.

The photo is of the external monitor. The notebook lid is closed.

There are tons of things attached by USB hubs. 2 external backup drives, printer, external keyboard and mouse, etc.

If it's like this in the morning, I see three options.

1 lift the lid and press the power button.
2 Unplug everything, lift the lid and press the power button
3 unplug everything, unplug the power, take the battery out and then put the battery in and plug the power in and then press the power button.

My best choice?

I'd do it now

What extra issues could happen by waiting?

This computer has become very slow in the last 6 months. It could just be doing stupid slow.

While Microsoft is very impatient pushing out their updates, computers tend to be very patient things. If it's stuck, what harm waiting. It' 5 minute to my typical bedtime.

I had a crazy thing happen to my PC.

I have Windows 8. I always leave my puter on. When I came home after being away for several hours, there was nothing but a white screen and the words: "To access Mail, sign on", with the little box to sign on in (or sign in on - I am easily confused). I have no idea what this "Mail" is. I never saw the screen before.

I couldn't shrink the screen or click it off. No matter where or how I moved the mouse, nothing happened. I did a hard-boot and everything has been fine so far.

Sorry, I know this has two-tenths of fuck-all* to do with your problem.

*Stole that bit from bilby.

Mistake #1: Running a version of Windows later than 7.

Mistake #2: Loading the October disaster.

I usually allocate fuck-all in eighths. Usually three eighths as a maximum. ;)

Install Linux. Win 10 is a bad joke.

^ This.

A fixed version of the October update just dropped. Apparently some versions of the update deleted people's files.

The computer was still hung when I came down this morning. I did my option 3 above. It turned on and told me that the update failed and the computer would revert to the version before the update attempt. It did that in about 15 minutes and all was fine.

I knew that windows would try to update again soon so I just said do it now. It took about 30 minutes and it seems to have updated though I did get a message that it could not apply my "Personalized settings". Not sure what those were. It appears to be as it was.

What?

Now I don't get it. I posted the above right after my computer was up and running after what I described just above. Now there is a notification that that Windows is going to do ANOTHER update. WTF? It supposedly just updated in the last 30 minutes.

Mail is the preinstalled windows app that wants to be your e-mail client. If it isn't, and you don't use it, it is safe to ignore.

My computer appears to have figured itself out for the moment. No new updates.

I will admit my new Lenovo ThinkPad issued by my employer has me hoping that the Dell meets a premature death. The Lenovo fully boots, updates Outlook and opens Skype4Businesss in about 45 seconds. This Dell takes a good 15 minutes to be ready to use.

LINUX is for sissy girly-men. Manly knowledgeable men use BeOS.
