Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Talks African Ancestry, Cultural Appropriation & Democratic Leadership - That Grape Juice
Started off with the Virginia governor's recent controversy over some youthful costuming as a KKK member. She didn't think that he handled it very well - he should have been more up front about it.

About Elizabeth Warren, AOC says that she herself has mixed ancestry, and is thus neither black nor Native nor white. Then about the Select Committee for Climate Change, she stated that she was too loaded down with other committee assignments to do that one well. But her good friend Rep. Joe Neguse is on it. Then capitalism vs. socialism. AOC likes a democratic economy, something that includes worker-run cooperatives. Something that may be interpreted as a form of capitalism. Then how she'd like multiple parties, though I was disappointed in her lack of mentioning Duverger's law and proportional representation.

AOC, Gloria Steinem Say Donald Trump Trolled Himself in State of the Union
We got the instantly powerful Congresswoman leaving Capitol Hill after her first State of the Union speech, and she wasted no time eviscerating the Prez.

She told our photog Trump got trolled when female Representatives stood and cheered after he applauded their strength in numbers. As AOC says, the women are almost all Democrats who are in a righteous battle against him.

She found the speech "weird" and turned Trump's own fantasy against him. You'll recall, Trump talked about what America would be like if he wasn't POTUS. Well, AOC also has fantasies of what America would look like without Trump.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez gets her first political biography with 'easy to read text' from the publishing house behind the Boss Babes adult coloring book
  • Workman Publishing is releasing its first political biography of freshman Congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
  • A representative said it won't resemble a traditional biography
  • It will 'look and feel like an of-the-moment gift book with a bold cover, easy-to-read text, and tons of vibrant photos in a small package' the representative said
  • 'AOC: Fighter, Phenom, Changemaker' will hit shelves in November 2019
  • Workman also is behind the Boss Babes adult coloring book, which includes coloring and activities that feature women they deem 'bad-a** ladies'
  • The coloring book features women like Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and tennis star Serena Williams

I can't help but be very fascinated by AOC. She's had a remarkable career so far, and she talks about things that other politicians are reluctant to do. My main criticism of her is that she seems thin on the ground on some issues. But she seems capable of learning.

U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Remedy for Walking in Heels – Footwear News
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took to Instagram last night to show her 2.8 million followers her remedy for wearing pumps for over 10 hours. “If you want to know what life as a congresswoman is like, I am currently stepping on bags of frozen broccoli in my kitchen because my feet just got wild cramps from walking around in heels for 12 hours,” AOC wrote over a snap of her foot and, as stated, a bag of greens from the freezer.

The 29-year-old New York Democrat explained she doesn’t have to wear pumps for her job, but sometimes she prefers to. “People are asking if I’m required to wear heels for work, the answer is NO I don’t have to wear heels, I was just trying to wear cute ankle boots and feel my jush today, okay?!” She then added in parenthesis, “But I also have yet to see the speaker wear flats 👠.”

AOC followed that up by posting a photo of herself in the ankle boots during an outing. “True life: I toured LGA construction and lobbied for solar panels and living wage jobs in ankle boots and now I’m stepping on frozen broccoli for it,” the Bronx native quipped.
High heels seem like an awful kind of shoe. Why wear them if one can get pretty-looking flat shoes? Women can now wear pantsuits in business settings, so why not flats?

When she's on the go, AOC does wear flats, like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Walks in Puerto Rican Day Parade in Flats – Footwear News and when she visited the border camps earlier this summer.

Appearing on a “hip-hop” radio show in New York, Ebro In the Morning, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez agreed with the interviewer, Ebro Darden, in his claim that there were “white supremacist Jews” who aligned with “racism.”

According to Fox News, Darden remarked, “How do you have white supremacist Jews?”

“How do you have these individuals who are legit aligning with racism and white supremacy, but they’re Jewish?” he asked. “It’s something that most people can’t wrap their brains around. But it’s a real thing.”

“He then asserted, “What’s going on with Israel and Palestine, while it’s very, very, deep, it is very, very, criminal, and it is very, very unjust.”

Ocasio-Cortez appeared to agree wholeheartedly with these claims, saying, “Absolutely.”

No evidence asked for, and none provided. Israel is “very, very criminal, and it [the situation it has created] is very, very unjust.”

Ocasio-Cortez appeared to agree wholeheartedly with these claims, saying, “Absolutely.”
angelo, here is the source: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez On Impeaching Trump, Nancy Pelosi, Recent Backlash + Breaks Down Her Job - YouTube AOC covers a lot of stuff in it, and I find her very intelligent and knowledgable and thoughtful.

Also, anybody can be racist. A certain Leonard Jeffries is a black racist. He believes that black people are nice "Sun People" and white people are nasty "Ice People".

As to commonly-used racial categories, these are sometimes gerrymandered by ethnicity. From Duana Fullwiley: Race in a Genetic World | Harvard Magazine,
“I am an African American,” says Duana Fullwiley, “but in parts of Africa, I am white.” To do fieldwork as a medical anthropologist in Senegal, she says, “I take a plane to France, a seven- to eight-hour ride. My race changes as I cross the Atlantic. There, I say, ‘Je suis noire,’ and they say, ‘Oh, okay—métisse—you are mixed.’ Then I fly another six to seven hours to Senegal, and I am white. In the space of a day, I can change from African American, to métisse, to tubaab [Wolof for “white/European”]. This is not a joke, or something to laugh at, or to take lightly. It is the kind of social recognition that even two-year-olds who can barely speak understand. ‘Tubaab,’ they say when they greet me.”
So in a day, she goes from black to mixed-race to white. Duana Fullwiley | Department of Anthropology has a picture of her.

Let us first review what genetic races humanity could be said to have. I consulted  Caucasian race,  Race and genetics, and  Human genetic clustering, and the latter two have some research that recent advances in gene sequencing has made possible. That has made possible a much finer-grained look at human genetic variation, but I will skip over that.

The races of humanity:
  • African (south of the Sahara Desert - "black")
  • Macro-European (Europe, Middle East, northern Africa - "white")
  • South Asian (in Indian Subcontinent, with the northern part having a Macro-European admixture)
  • East Asian
  • Macro-Australian (Australia, New Guinea, Melanesia)
  • New World
South Asian and New World could both be called Indian, though one will then have to distinguish them. Like Asian and American Indian, or dot and feather Indian. I don't like using Christopher Columbus's big blunder, however.

I'll now turn to what race Jews are. Blood brothers: Palestinians and Jews share genetic roots - Science & Health - Haaretz.com From the genetics, Palestinians are Macro-European, meaning that most Jews are also Macro-European.

If one avoids ethnic gerrymandering, then "white" must mean Macro-European, and that means that most Jews are white. So Jews can have no trouble being white supremacists.

This also means that "white Hispanic" is no contradiction, since many Hispanics have large fractions of Macro-European ancestry.

In the US, Hispanics are usually not considered white, even Hispanics with mainly or mostly Macro-European ancestry. But by genetics, such Hispanics are "white Hispanics".

Turning to the ancestry of Puerto Ricans, I've found History Shaped the Geographic Distribution of Genomic Admixture on the Island of Puerto Rico and Recent Genetic Selection in the Ancestral Admixture of Puerto Ricans From the first one: "Average ancestry values for the Puerto Rican population were 15.2% (±7.2), 21.2% (±14.4), and 63.7% (±15.2) for the Native American, African, and European contributions, respectively."

Meaning that Puerto Ricans are, on average, 63.7±15.2% Macro-European, 21.2±14.4%, African, and 15.2±7.2% New-World. The amount of the various ancestries is different in different parts of the island. African ancestry predominates in the east end of it.

AOC herself is light-skinned with straight hair, so she's likely largely Macro-European. But she has some nieces with frizzy hair, and that is an African feature.

Of the rest of the "Squad" members, Rashida Tlaib is a Palestinian, making her Macro-European, or non-gerrymandered white. Ayanna Pressley is an American black, meaning that she is largely or mostly African with some Macro-European admixture. Ilhan Omar is a Somali, and she is likely also an African - Macro-European mixture. As to their great antagonist, Donald Trump is Macro-European, as are his three wives.

Turning to the Presidential candidates, the question of race has come up with Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris. EW seems to be mostly Macro-European with some New-World ancestry, and KH is more complicated: part South Asian, part Macro-European, and part African. But the African part is diluted enough to give her light skin and straight hair. Tulsi Gabbard is also mixed.

AOC is from New York, and she knows, there have been tensions between blacks and Jews in New York going back decades. There are many blacks there that despise orthodox Jews, and many orthodox Jews who return the sentiments. Not all Jews and Blacks feel this way, but enough do that it is a notable undercurrent of life in parts of New York.

But by genetics, such Hispanics are "white Hispanics".

Only when they kill a black teenager in self-defense. Otherwise, they are still considered "non-white" and entitled to race-based benefits such as easier college and Med school admissions.

Some ~ 1/1024.

Kamala is overcompensating by going "blacker than thou". Instead she could have used her interesting ancestry to be a uniter, not a divider. She chose to be a divider, which is disappointing. Tulsi is just a nut with no chance of getting within the sniff of either the White House or the Eisenhower Executive Building.

One is reminded of Jesse Jackson's "hymietown" slur or Al Sharpton inciting the deadly Freddie Fashion Mart arson because a Jew dared open a store in Harlem.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez interview on Trump, immigration, dating and more | abc7ny.com
Starts out with AOC meeting constituents and letting them take selfies with her. Many of them know who she is. With all the nasty comments about her online, many people are pleasantly surprised to find that she's much nicer in person. To unwind, she likes to cook and go to restaurants. Kamala Harris also likes to cook, and if she gets elected President, the two could exchange recipes.

AOC likes New York City as a place where people with different origins and backgrounds and incomes can coexist - some 200 languages spoken. She thinks that it's a good example not only for the rest of the US, but also for the rest of the world.

AOC in her own words: An interview with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez - YouTube - nice interview. What she finds hurtful is not so much certain politicians' bigotry but the willingness of certain people to become bigots in response. Their family members feel like they have lost a member as a result.

She recommends to the Democratic leadership that they should seek new voters. She did that, and that was the key to her success, with primary turnout increasing by 68%. She has no regrets about opposing Amazon giveaways, noting that Amazon didn't need them to move in.

She talked about her Congressional lapel pin, and how she has committed herself to serving the people of the United States and her district. About describing the border camps as "concentration camps", she stands by what she says. As to ousting Trump and pushing a progressive agenda, she thinks that they go together, because ousting Trump with no change in policies may get us a Trumpian leader again. She's also not afraid of "radical" - lots of things that we nowadays take for granted were once considered that.

As to Kamala Harris, she may be culturally black, but her genetics are a mixture. Her mother is almost pure South Asian, while her father is a mixture of African, Macro-European, and maybe also New World.

As to Europeans, there is evidence of at least three contributing populations.
Genetic testing reveals that Europe is a melting pot, made of immigrants
Massive migration from the steppe was a source for Indo-European languages in Europe
A Paleolithic population, an Neolithic-farmer population and a steppe-herder population. The Paleolithic people got there first, likely coming from the Middle East. The Neolithic population followed, started expanding around 10,000 years ago with the invention of agriculture. The steppe population started expanding around 5,000 years ago, with horses and wheeled vehicles.

Most Europeans have components of all three, with Southern Europeans having more Neolithic ancestry and Northern and Eastern Europeans having more steppe ancestry. Looking at other Macro-Europeans, Middle Easterners don't have much steppe ancestry, so they are likely much like Southern Europeans - largely Neolithic. That is likely also true of the Macro-European component of the northern Indian subcontinent. The Southern part is much more South Asian, at least from these cluster analyses.

Back to that recent interview with AOC, that Congressional lapel pin was on the long sleeveless black dress that she was wearing.

Her interviewer asked her whether we should do away with cars or internal combustion engines (my recollection), and she seemed diffident. She then reiterated that we have to get off of fossil fuels. Seems like she is not very familiar with synthetic fuels.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez 60 Minutes interview: 5 key moments - Vox
“If people want to really blow up one figure here or one word there, I would argue that they’re missing the forest through the trees,” Ocasio-Cortez said when asked about the matter on 60 Minutes. “I think that there’s a lot of people more concerned about being precisely, factually, and semantically correct than about being morally right.”

Ocasio-Cortez, because of her age and gender, often seems to be held to a different standard than other politicians. She clarified to Cooper that being factually correct is “absolutely important” and said that when she makes a mistake she admits it and restates her point.

“It’s not the same thing as … the president lying about immigrants,” she said.

AOC doesn't strike me as someone who would date someone who thought of her as 'just a bartender' given her obvious intelligence, education and drive.

But fair point: Michelle Obama did not sign up to be First Lady when she married Barack. She had no intentions of a political life.

Certain common themes emerged from interviews with them: All spoke of achieving bipartisan cooperation and nearly every one attacked Ocasio-Cortez for her role in Amazon’s decision not to build a campus in Queens. They similarly disparaged her Green New Deal proposal to combat climate change and provide jobs to the unemployed and uninsured as both unrealistic and bad for the economy and Medicare-for All as policy that would hurt her constituents with sky-high taxes.

The candidates also criticized Ocasio-Cortez for having too national of an agenda and not spending enough time addressing issues in her district, which includes parts of Queens and the Bronx, like public housing, infrastructure and criminal justice reform. The congresswoman did not open a district office until March, two months after she took office. Although, despite the candidates’ claim that she is wildly unpopular in the district, an April Siena College poll found a majority of her voting constituents viewed her favorably and 48% of all voters would re-elect her.

She had phone-banked for Obama and she noted that Obama came in at a very bad time, and that he faced a lot of Republican obstructionism.
