Bidengate Breaks... err... down

I have a hard time believeing that the "undecided middle" care all that much about Ukraine anyway. Most Americans don't. I mean, people are dying over there, and all you get is a rolle of the eyes if you want to talk about it. For that matter, Trump explicitly endorsed the genocide China is committing against the Uighurs, and that hasn't been a talking point even on the Left. We as a nation do not consider non-Americans to be truly human.

Damn it! Those things aren't cheap. Okay, so random computer shop gets an uncleaned laptop from Beau Biden Foundation. A five plus year old laptop is unclaimed (has years of emails on it? no passwords?), so the repair guy goes snooping on it. He finds information and contacts the FBI and then of course... an associate of fucking Rudolph Giuliani? Are you fucking kidding me?! Yeah, one time I was having an issue getting a permit in Cleveland, so I contacted an associate of Giuliani to get things set.

Passwords without encryption wouldn't keep a competent computer guy out.

And I can easily see a 5 year old laptop going unclaimed--there's not a lot you can fix on them, it could easily have been a case of repairing it wasn't worthwhile.

A five year old macbook is still pretty pricey.

A professional repair shop takes in a computer for repair, doesn't get any contact info from the person dropping it off? This stinks to high heaven.

Yeah, as more comes out it looks like the whole thing is faked. They got the e-mails by some illicit means (probably Moscow) and are using harmless stuff as support for the spicy stuff they faked.

Another point I heard today. Hunter Biden lives in L.A., not on the east coast.

Suspect provenance of Hunter Biden data cache prompts skepticism and social media bans

But even supposing no global influence effort existed, the provenance of this so-called leak would be difficult to swallow. So much so that major news organizations have held off coverage, and Facebook and Twitter have both limited the distribution of the NY Post article.

The very idea that a laptop with a video of Hunter Biden smoking crack on it would be given to a random repair shop to recover is absurd. It is years since his drug use and Burisma dealings became a serious issue of international importance, and professionals would long since have taken custody of any relevant hardware or storage. It is beyond the worst operational security in the world to give an unencrypted device with confidential data on it to a third party. It is, however, very much a valid way for someone to make a device appear to be from a person or organization without providing any verification that it is so.

The repair shop supposedly could not identify Hunter Biden, who lives in Los Angeles, as the customer. But the invoice (for $85 — remarkably cheap for diagnosis, recovery, and backup of three damaged Macs) has “Hunter Biden” written right on it, with a phone number and one of the email addresses he reportedly used. It seems unlikely that Hunter Biden’s personal laptop — again, loaded with personal and confidential information, and possibly communications with the VP — would be given to a small repair shop (rather than an Apple Store or vetted dealer) and that shop would be given his personal details for contact. Political operators with large supporting organizations simply don’t do that — though someone else could have.

Even if they did, the idea that Biden or his assistant or whoever would not return to pick up the laptop or pay for the services is extremely suspicious. Again, these are supposedly the personal devices of someone who communicated regularly with the VP, and whose work had come under intense scrutiny long before they were dropped off. They would not be treated lightly or forgotten. On the other hand, someone who wanted this data to be inspected would do exactly this.

That the laptops themselves were open and unencrypted is ridiculous. The serial number of the laptop suggests it was a 2017 MacBook Pro, probably running Mojave. Every Mac running Lion or later has easily enabled built-in encryption. It would be unusual for anyone to provide a laptop for repair that had no password or protection whatsoever on its files, let alone a person like Hunter Biden — again, years into efforts to uncover personal data relating to his work in Ukraine. An actor who wanted this data to be discovered and read would leave it unencrypted.

That this information would be inspected by the repair shop at all is very suspect indeed. Recovery of an ostensibly damaged Mac would likely take the form of cloning the drive and checking its integrity against the original. There is no reason the files or apps themselves would need to be looked at in the course of the work in the first place. Some shops have software that checks file hashes, if they can see them, against a database of known child sex abuse material. And there have been notable breaches of trust where repair staff illicitly accessed the contents of a laptop to get personal data. But there’s really no legitimate reason for this business to inspect the contents of the devices they are working on, let alone share that information with anyone, let alone a partisan operative. The owner, and avid Trump supporter, gave an interview this morning giving inconsistent information on what had happened and suggested he investigated the laptops of his own volition and retained copies for personal protection.

The data itself is not convincing. The Post has published screenshots of emails instead of the full text with metadata — something you would want to do if you wanted to show they were authentic. For stories with potential political implications, it’s wise to verify.

Lastly, the fact that a copy was given to Giuliani and Bannon before being handed over to the FBI, and that it is all being published two weeks before the election, lends the whole thing a familiar stink — one you may remember from other pre-election shenanigans in 2016. The choice of the Post as the outlet for distribution is curious, as well; one need only to accidentally step on one in the subway to understand why.

The Hunter Biden timeline

  • There has never been even a hint of evidence that Hunter Biden did anything wrong. He’s a Washington lobbyist who sits on various boards and had done a few small jobs for Burisma during the Obama administration. The head of Burisma at the time was trying to assemble an “all-star” board of directors and approached Hunter Biden. Was this an attempt to curry favor with the White House? I wouldn’t be surprised. But that has nothing to do with Hunter Biden’s work for Burisma, which he says was mostly about corporate governance.

This part isn't exactly right. If his device was 2017 then it would at least be running OS X Yosemite (heh https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OS_X_Yosemite), meaning that encryption isn't easily enabled, but instead must be manually disabled. It's beyond unbelievable.

US spies say the Hunter Biden email controversy shows how 'exploitable' and 'grotesquely vulnerable' Trump and Giuliani are to Russian intelligence

It doesn't really matter if the story is fake news, because it is truthy. It fits into the story that Hunter Biden is a successful career lobbyist from a young age because he is able sell access to his father, a corrupt politician for sale to foreign corporate interests, which also makes them both traitors. It's such an easy story to believe, especially when you add in Hunter Biden's coke habit, which suggests he lacks moral character.

The idea that some blue-collar small-business everyman, who charges a very humble fee for computer repairs, discovered evidence of some international conspiracy and blew the whistle, risking his own safety? What a hero. Forget about the boring forensic details - that is hair-splitting just intended to distract people from the fact that the good guys have caught the Bidens selling out the country to foreigners.

On top of that, the "Ted Cruz is going to subpoena Twitter and Facebook" narrative is going strong. The GOP has found a way to make this bigger than the veracity of the NY Post story; it's now about sticking it to the immensely unlikeable CEOs, who have too much power and who are framed as enemies of the right wing. Even if the NY Post story is exposed as unmitigated bullshit, the real story will be the fact that the leftist media was so quick in crushing it before anyone actually knew it was unmitigated bullshit.

And this is true, I think to a point. Most Americans don't know that Hunter Biden exists. This didn't exist with Hillary Clinton, people knew she existed, so it was easier to make with the Clinton Fndn lies. Hunter Biden sells to the base, not nearly as much to people who can't decide between Trump or Biden or whether people will chose between voting or not voting at all against Trump.

This ridiculous story is falling apart quickly, NY Post Journos themselves are already distancing themselves from it - but it's a really fascinating case study in what a real conspiracy looks like: an extravaganza of incompetence.

It's worth it to take the time to look at certain RW politicians, media heads, Bannon, etc...who are pushing this story and their faces as they gleefully drool over something of which they have no verification (I looked for the alleged verification, there is none), just to see the spectacle in all its moronic glory.

And now Giuliani's ex-pal Cohen is spilling some more beans about Giuliani. Giuliani is a hard drinking drunk who is an easy mark for foreign ops and con men. Giuliani will soon lose all access to anybody worth knowing in Washington when Biden gets elected. He will linger like a dog turd on the front lawn for awhile, occasionally showing up on Faux Nooz to fill a five minute segment for Faux, but he is going to fade away unless he gets into legal trouble for this.

I think I'm going to have to keep this line from the black book thread handy.

It’s what everyone does. It’s what the whole thing is. There is no scam here. It’s grifters grifting grifters all the way down.

I suppose this could be considered an October Surprise in the sense that it's fucking amazing that anyone would consider this to be a viable strategy.

According to that thread, the Feds have had the laptops since 4/2019. This is definitely the new October surprise.

I liked this reply.

As high up as it gets is Trump... and his word is worth nothing.

These people realize there are laws about defamation of character right?

And it seems kind of odd for Hunter Biden to accused of raping and torturing "little" Chinese children. Raping wasn't enough for an outlandish accusation?

Why can't he be sued into oblivion over stuff like this?

If Bidengate was a spreadsheet, it'd be riddled with circular references errors.

Fox News is citing email posted by the New York Post who, itself refers to the hard drive they claim was on Hunter Biden's laptop as being "purportedly" from Hunter Biden's laptop. WTF?!

Fox News said:
The New York Post initially published the emails and other controversial messages that Fox News has also obtained.
NY Post said:
The email, labeled from Robert Biden — Hunter’s first name — is among a trove of messages, documents, photos and videos purportedly recovered from a MacBook Pro laptop that a Delaware computer shop owner told The Post was brought in for repair in April 2019 and never picked up.
The NY Post link goes to their own story alleging where the alleged information came from!

The other funny thing is that for a drugged out guy, Hunter seems quite lucid in that long couple dozen point email he allegedly wrote.

And I'm not certain why the NY Post, Wayne Root, or Fox News cited his point 20.

from alleged Hunter Biden email said:
To that end they need to know in no uncertain terms that we will not and cannot intervenedirectly with domestic policy makers, and that we need to abide by FARA and any other USlaws in the strictest sense across the board.

So a Newscorp owned network is confirming a Newscorp owned tabloid.

Subtle. And yes the Murdoch echo chamber is now in full effect.
