Sick Fucks: Philly Police grab black toddler from SUV after destroying vehicle and injuring mom and cousin for no reason, use photo as propaganda

Why wouldn't a person apply to be an American police officer? Are you kidding? It's a great job. Great pay. Beloved and adored by the public. And one of the safest jobs in America. Long hours. Who wouldn't want to be a cop today?

Sane?

We really shit on our public servants in this country, regardless of type.

If only bootlicking authority worshipers could tell the difference between "shitting on" and "holding accountable," we might not have police shooting black people for sport or be one of the top countries in the world in terms of police brutality.

Except you don't seem to be able to tell them apart. Guilty until proven innocent beyond a shadow of a doubt is shitting on, not holding accountable.

I think that cops have a perverse incentive to let looting go on. It makes their side look more moral in comparison.

See the people protesting us are criminals.

A related reason they want to the looting to be unabated is that is makes people afraid, and when people are afraid they support authoritarian brutality to restore "order." That's why the GOP is using video of "riots" in the ad campaigns to re-elect a fascist, and why Trump warns white suburban parents about the evil "elements" that will invade their neighborhood under Biden, and why white supremacists have actually instigated much of the violence and looting.

Not only that, but they deliberately stir the pot to get people to vote authoritarian.

Police do not shoot black people for sport.

They might as well. But instead of getting defensive on behalf of corrupt police, maybe you could lend your voice in holding them accountable.

Please, spare me your religious proselytizing. I don't give two flying fucks about defending the cops. In general, I don't like cops, and I don't get along with them. They make shit up and lie at your arraignment. American police are in effect a gang that does policing, not a proper police force.

But they don't shoot black people for sport. They don't shoot anyone for sport, although, they do shoot a lot of people, of every background.

I care about the truth, because I have this crazy idea that to fix problems, especially in complex systems like society, you have to use your brain. You can't just indulge in whatever Manichean narrative fills the void left by the death of Christianity. One where you can indulge in your hatred of the people you dislike as morally stunted reprobates, and of course, you can be the Saint, or even better, the Repentant Sinner. Sorry, but I never took to that sort of thinking from pretty early on, and I can smell it a mile away. I was raised Catholic.

A dishonest and sloppy narrative does not help hold police accountable. It does the opposite. The truth is important, and telling lies is wrong. And you don't even have to accept that metaphysically or ethically, just consider wholly operational advice.

Since when? We aren't talking about a private citizen here, police officers supposedly agree to have their work scrutinized when they sign on to the job. Any misconduct resulting in death is supposed to be taken very seriously, it isn't like suing your neighbor over a fenceline or something. YOU the citizen, do not have a right to be considered innocent until proven guilty, if we give the police an uncontested right to execute you in the street. Ultimately, the police force itself is unconstitutional to the core, and it has to be carefully kept in line if a free and democratic state is to succeed. They are a threat to our legal rights, not the object of those rights.

Police forces across the country are corrupt as hell. They're operating under KKK ideology, not "protect and serve" and certainly not "innocent until proven guilty." They have become a white supremacist cult with badges and weapons and a government that chooses more often than not to look the other way. Those who are not "bad apples" are irrelevant. They're doing nothing to help. It's not entirely their fault, but the "good cops" do not in any right wing fantasy define police culture right now. They're useless to the problem. The crooked, racist cops call the shots.

I don't believe for a second that you give a shit about the truth. What a fucking joke. And I am anything but religious. Being adamant and saying things you don't like isn't religion. But protecting authority from accountability is fundamental to authoritarian religion.

They had the opportunity to be innocent until proven guilty. They were given body cameras. They decided to turn them off.

I will shit some hot, sticky, brown accountability all up into the mouth of anyone who thinks that, given the badge and gun of the state, that any cop deserves to be trusted when he turns the vehicle of his actual accountability off.

An inactive body camera is an admission of ANYTHING the other guy says.

Police do not shoot black people for sport.

A few of them flirt with it, though.

Hundreds of active and former police officers are part of extremist Facebook groups

Hundreds of active and retired police officers and law enforcement personnel are congregating in private Facebook groups where they engage in open racism, Islamophobia, and even lend support to violent, anti-government groups, according to an investigation from nonprofit news organization Reveal, which is run by the US Center for Investigative Reporting.

After Reveal notified law enforcement agencies, more than 50 departments have reportedly opened internal investigations. In some cases, departments say they’ll be evaluating officers’ online activity to see if it may have influenced past policing conduct. At least one officer has been fired for violating department policies as a result of participating in these groups, some of which bear names like “White Lives Matter” and “Death to Islam Undercover.”

Reveal reports that the groups contain a full range of right-wing political ideologies, from standard conservativism to far-right initiatives that center around outright racism and Islamophobia. Some go even further: some Facebook groups surveyed by Reveal were associated with anti-government and militia movements, like the Oath Keepers. Reveal says that 150 of the 400 or so officers that it identified as belonging to these groups were part of that more extreme end.

The cops are narcissists and abusers just like our current occupant in the White House.

I don't know about the religious aspect of this, but if you haven't correctly defined the problem any proposed solutions are almost certain to fail.

Citizens and police have nearly the same rights to the use of force in self defense. The basic differences are that to varying degrees civilians are expected to retreat if it can be done safely, and that civilians are not allowed force in self defense when they are the aggressor, the police are.

Once again, attacking me instead of addressing the issue.

I think turning off body cameras without permission should mean an automatic dismissal from the police force.

If they actually turn it off, I agree.

The problem is twofold:

1) Current power supplies are too big to support recording for a whole shift and then some. In practice cops turn on their cameras at an incident. Mistakes will be made. I believe this could be addressed but it would require new cameras. Put transmitters (say, bluetooth) in police cars that tell the camera to shut up. Lose the signal, the camera comes on--ideally, make it come on 20 seconds before it loses the signal. (No, you don't need time travel. You can actually run the camera all day with current batteries, the limit is in storing it. Leave the camera running and encoding the video but throw it away when you run out of memory. When you turn on the camera that encoded video is written out. This is nothing novel, that's how parked incident recording in dashcams works.)

2) There are times cameras should be turned off. Think a cop is going to be welcome in a public bathroom with their camera running? And there are plenty of things a cop rolls up on that recording probably shouldn't be done. They need to be able to turn off the camera in such cases. There will be occasional cases where the situation changes. (They roll up on a naked rape victim, while investigating it turns out the rapist was hiding rather than gone.)

I think that there may be a fundamental problem in some ways with our species: those who most want and thus seek hardest to attain power rarely if ever do as well with it as one who does not seek it but has it appointed to them nonetheless.

Police might be better drafted than volunteered as they are. If you don't want to be there, doing that, I suspect you would be less prone to violence, and more willing to make noise when those to your left and right commit it needlessly.

But that is unlikely and probably infeasible due to the training expectations. Then again, it's not like the assholes out there have any decent training. I know a few police forces that while I was aware in the 2007 range wouldn't hire Marines.

There is a fundamental problem with how our society selects and filters police. I don't know the solutions. I somewhat hope the people here offer up some useful solutions. I know PROBLEMS include training that teaches people to readily, needlessly kill; include sending someone forward armed; include the influx of racist gang members and gang cultures including "Executioners". I have learned one thing: real, respectable, human people will not readily talk about, communicate, or think about the lives they have taken.

1: backbuffers are great. Current body cams should have them. Older cameras before the bodycams era did.

2. Put the big fucking babies in diapers for all I care. The camera stays on. And activate storage dump on many events: getting out the car, drawing the weapon, drawing the pepper spray, getting a call.
