California May Have a Random Celebrity Republican as Governor Soon

By "upset" do you mean trample on constitutional rights ?

And then squander millions of dollars of tax payers money chasing a lost cause.

The recall is not about "upsetting" one particular group either. This incident is just another example of his arrogance.
Like straight up wasting 276 million taxpayer dollars because you think your elected leader is "arrogant" and can't wait a year and a half to vote him out democratically?

If the recall is successful then it is a small price to pay to get rid of a governor who is not only arrogant but grossly incompetent.

This is such a stupid recall, and California's process makes it much stupider. The double vote thing is so antidemocratic. Should just make the lt gov the replacement if a recall passes, or hold a separate election for that choice.

Democrats should have changed the recall law after the last time. Need to change the proposition law too.

And replace him with a radio show host?

Recall to save us from semi-competent government via replacing it with completely incompetent government...

Any government that tolerates shit in the streets as okay is not competent.

How else can they do it? They know perfectly well that their joke candidates will never win a free and fair majority vote in a well-educated and affluent state like California. The only way they can possibly win is to exploit a legal loophole that allows a replacement candidate to occupy the governor's mansion with only 20% of voters supporting him, provided people are significantly unhappy with the person who is currently there.

I'm really hoping this system is on borrowed time; as blastula rightly suggests above, it would be much more democratic in a recall situation to simply pass leadership on to the lieutenant governor (in our state, an elected position separate from that of the governor), just the same as if the governor got sick, went missing, robbed a train, etc. I guarantee you we would not be having this recall election right now if Republicans didn't think they could use the procedural follies of the current system to sneak a Trumpist into office against the will of the Californian electorate. Their arguments against Newsom, supposedly so strong and deeply held, would vanish like dust in the wind if they knew that the only likely alternative was a competent Democrat and a woman to boot.

Is it even possible to change the procedure without constitutional amendment or referendum? California's right-wingers have hamstrung the state government with a variety of stupidities that need super-majorities to overturn.

And by the way, while Larry Elder may become Governor with just 19% of the vote, it is theoretically possible for the "winner" to get just 2% (with 50+ names on the ballot, as it is) and defeat an incumbent who gets 49%.

Last time California went through this idiocy, Shwarzenegger got more votes than incumbent Davis, IIRC. Americans lack imagination: since that election result seemed rational, the inherent problem disappeared from view.

All of this is quite true (and unfortunate).

Heard that Larry Elder got his start at WVIZ (PBS) in Cleveland a while ago. Thought that was interesting. Larry Elder sounds like a great professional complainer. He should do a pretty good job as Governor, having complained so much on the radio.

'Emergency Action Warranted' to Protect CA Recall After Vote System Software Leak, Experts Warn SoS

Open letter to CA's Sec. of State calls for 'urgent mitigating action' with an immediate mandate for statewide post-election Risk-Limiting Audits...

Eight of the nation's top cybersecurity and voting systems experts warned in a letter sent to California's Secretary of State on Thursday night that "emergency action is warranted" in response to a recent leak of key voting system software used in nearly 60% of state jurisdictions amid CA's ongoing Gubernatorial recall election.

The bluntly -- and urgently -- worded, 3-page letter [PDF] from the longtime experts in this field to CA Sec. of State Dr. Shirley Weber calls for a specific type of public, post-election audit as the "one critical action" that should be announced immediately, in response to software recently stolen from Mesa County, Colorado and Antrim County, Michigan. The software in question, Election Management System (EMS), was released over the Internet for broad download during a so-called "Cyber Symposium" run by Trump supporter, conspiracy theorist and pillow impresario, Mike Lindell three weeks ago. The EMS software, used in both CO and MI and many other states, including CA, is used to manage virtually every aspect of elections, from ballot creation to tabulation. Forty of California's 58 counties, according to AP's coverage of this matter tonight, use a version of the Dominion EMS that, according to the experts' letter, while "not identical" is virtually the same with only "relatively minor" differences.

"The release materially elevates threats to the trustworthiness of the ongoing California recall election and to public trust in the election," the experts inform Weber, as they urge her to, in advance of the election, mandate a robust statewide post-election audit in each county in the state.

Sounds like some more lawsuits are in order.

Any government that tolerates shit in the streets as okay is not competent.

Nobody else is going to touch this?

Well, I wasn't going to because they are muted for me, but now that I've seen it...

I expect that the ones being touted in the election are anti-mask and anti-vaxx.

Maybe if we are lucky they'll just get Covid, take some horse de-wormer, and it won't be our problem anymore.

The governor is responsible for keeping the streets clean in individual cities?

That's non-responsive to the legitimate issue of human excrement on the streets of San Francisco that Trausti brought up.

Who was mayor from 2004 to 2011?

I love this picture from the article:

At the rate things are decaying here in California, this is what the state is destined to look like under the rule of the Prince of Poop, Gavin Newsom. He needs to go.

Note to self: only hike in the Presidio.

Now I must admit I am a little bit skeptical about the idea that the GOP is now the anti-shit party. I grew up in a staunchly Republican town. There was fucking cow shit everywhere, and if any of us kids complained about it, we were admonished to "grow up and get a job" before we tried to "put on airs" about it.

I am interested to learn what Elder's plan for eliminating shit from Californians might be, though. Where can I see an outline of his plan, and how much is it expected to cost? Is he emphasizing better access to public toilets? Offsetting the costs of internal plumbing and making it more available to low income homeowners and renters? Just pouring gobs of money into cleanup? What's the Republican proposal here?

Wait, are you saying this is a problem that the free market can’t fix?

All around our city right now there are crews replacing water lines to homes that have lead pipes. Along with the crews and the diggers and the orange barrels are dozens of portable toilets for the use of those crews. Seems like a simple solution.
