California May Have a Random Celebrity Republican as Governor Soon

I am interested to learn what Elder's plan for eliminating shit from Californians might be, though. Where can I see an outline of his plan, and how much is it expected to cost? Is he emphasizing better access to public toilets? Offsetting the costs of internal plumbing and making it more available to low income homeowners and renters? Just pouring gobs of money into cleanup? What's the Republican proposal here?

Bingo! This^^^^

How is the new governor going to resolve this problem without raising taxes to pay for the fix?

I don't pretend to understand foreign countries like California.

But just saying "We'll cut unnecessary spending", isn't very clear. What current spending is unnecessary? $276,000,000 on a recall, perhaps?

Based on what Elder has said, I would presume that any spending that supports schools with things like enforcing mask mandates, covid testing, etc. would be considered unnecessary spending.

Does that come up to $276,000,000?

Seems unlikely. But I don't pretend to understand California dollars.

Around here, where I live, you can live like a king on $50K. According to a TFT poster, Seattle pays $100K per homeless person per year.

Now I must admit I am a little bit skeptical about the idea that the GOP is now the anti-shit party. I grew up in a staunchly Republican town. There was fucking cow shit everywhere, and if any of us kids complained about it, we were admonished to "grow up and get a job" before we tried to "put on airs" about it.

And you think the Republicans can't solve cow shit problems?

India, 1975, lots of cows in the streets. No cow shit in the streets.

Simple fix, poor enough people that they'll scoop up the cow shit to use as cooking fuel.

Still the same in 1982, I haven't been there since to see if it has improved.

All around our city right now there are crews replacing water lines to homes that have lead pipes. Along with the crews and the diggers and the orange barrels are dozens of portable toilets for the use of those crews. Seems like a simple solution.

As with most fixes of homeless issues this isn't going to work with the nutters.

The nutters are a small part of the total homeless.

I don’t believe I claimed that that would be all the unnecessary spending. Just a start based on the priorities the candidate has said is important to him.

Wait, are you saying this is a problem that the free market can’t fix?

I care more about the problem than I do about ideological battles over this and that; if someone has a comprehensive, cohesive, and effective plan that would mobilize the "free market" to address the needs of the homeless folks in my community, I'd be more than willing to listen. In theory, a policy which has the support and backing of the business community could be a much more effective policy than one which they're all fighting and trying to sabotage by whatever means are at their disposal. But I'll want to hear the plan. I'm not signing a blank check over to people who have done nothing at all to gain my trust.

To a certain extent, they have been trying to do this; there are public toilets in all of the downtown areas of SF now. But, it's still pretty hard to find a clean loo, even if you're just a normal pedestrian. There aren't nearly enough (usually one per district), they aren't well-maintained, and they all close at 7pm. So I'm not sure they're doing much more than throwing matches into the sea.

And I note that the Republicans have fought the Pit Stop program tooth and nail, so if Elder intends to put his weight behind it, he'll be facing a bitter fight with his own party as a result. And I've yet to see any evidence that he intends to do anything about this at all anyway. Since when has any Southern Californian politician given two shits about what happens in San Francisco one way or another?

How small?

How do you, personally, distinguish between the abusers and the nutters?
Tom

Abusers are a special problem in that they tend to ruin facilities for other people's use until the city or whatever business and send someone along to clean the room, but I'm not sure they constitute the majority of the problem. I mean, how many times a day does a person need to shit in the first place? There are a lot of druggies, but not that many druggies. I think the shit problem is caused at least in part by homed, sane, relatively clean citizens and tourists who just can't find a bathroom when they're stumbling around Van Ness or Market at 1 in the morning, or are just failing to clean up after their dogs (the city doesn't really differentiate, and neither do most of the catastrophe-maps you see).

I've heard that the problem is getting better, though. There was an article a few weeks back reporting that the number of poop complaints to the city have decreased 80% from last year, this year.

Nitpick: It seems safe to assume that most right-wing politicians do give a shit or two about San Francisco (though not in the one way, but in another). Any harm that can be blamed on Democratic governance sells Trump apparel (or whatever the latest Tucker Carlson sponsors are selling). Trumpists, and Repubs more generally, are eager to find problems in noted "liberal" cities like S.F., and some may even effectively promote sabotages to help ensure failures.

Of course the republicans have a solution. Eliminate minimum wage, welfare, and medicade. Then most people will be too poor to buy food. No food = no shit. The people still able to buy food at that point are obviously the True Americans, and have their own bathrooms.

Are you kidding me? Its hardly just a Republican thing. Many here on this forum seem to take delight in the Covid-19 deaths of anti-vaxxers, especially several prominent right wing radio hosts. Physician heal thyself.

How is laughing at dumb cunts causing mayhem and chaos? Furthermore, I find a there is a distinction between pain and suffering and self inflicted pain and suffering. The former is motivated by vile cunts, the latter isn't. Hope that clears things up. Or to put it another way; physician go fuck thyself with thine false equivalence.

It occurs to me that a partial solution might be to redefine what constitutes a restroom.

Normal toilets have a problem with being used by druggies and general uncleanliness. How about a different tactic:

Install squat toilets in out of the way but open air locations and change the law so that using them is legal.

No enclosure, thus no druggies.

Squat toilets are far less of a cleanliness issue as the only contact is with the bottom of your footwear. If it could be made durable enough, include a spray hose to wash it down if need be.

The problem is people going in public, the toilets being semi-public shouldn't be a problem.

The anti-vaxxers are completely apathetic to the plight of children and elders who are unable to be vaccinated. They are apathetic to the overwhelmed health care establishment. They have swollen the death totals.
The spread of covid is preventable. Having a covid resurgence was preventable. Apparently, it's here and it's due to get worse next month.
If the unvaccinated make up the bulk of the serious cases, that is on them. And just possibly it will have a salutary effect. It may force them to confront their own madness.

Disagree--we like seeing them hoisted by their own petard. We don't favor general cruelty.
