Pontiac — Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald on Friday filed involuntary manslaughter charges against the suspect's parents in the Oxford High School shooting.

Jennifer and James Crumbley — the parents of 15-year-old Ethan Crumbley, who is accused of killing four of his classmates and wounding seven others — were charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter in the deaths of Hana St. Juliana, 14; Madisyn Baldwin, 17; Tate Myre, 16; and Justin Shilling, 17.

“These charges are intended to hold individuals who contributed to this tragedy accountable, but also to send a message,” McDonald said at a press conference. “We need to do better in this country. We need to say enough is enough. For our kids, teachers and all of us.”

McDonald said Ethan Crumbley was with father James when the father bought the Sig Sauer Model SP 2022 9 mm semi-automatic pistol at Acme Shooting Goods in Oxford on Nov. 26.

On Nov. 29, the day before the shooting, a teacher at Oxford High School reported Ethan was searching for ammunition on his phone, she said. The school reached out to Jennifer Crumbley, but never heard back from the parents, the prosecutor said.

Jennifer texted Ethan about it, McDonald said: “LOL, I’m not gonna get mad at you, you have to learn to not get caught.”

At a noon court proceeding in 52nd District Court in Rochester Hills, Lt. Tim Willis of Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said the parents knew their son was troubled and were told to get their son help.

The mother texted her son after learning about the shooting: "Ethan, don't do it," Willis added.

After a teacher found a disconcerting note and drawing, the Crumbleys were summoned to the school. But by the time they got there, Ethan had allegedly crossed out some of the notes that were most disturbing, including the words “blood everywhere” and “my life is useless," McDonald said.
At the meeting with the Crumbleys, the parents were told they were required to get Ethan into counseling within 48 hours. But the shooting took place a short time later.

“Both James and Jennifer failed to ask their son if he had a gun with him, or where his gun was located, or to inspect his backpack for the presence of a gun,” McDonald said.

After the meeting, Ethan Crumbley was returned to class, along with his backpack — the backpack allegedly used to carry the gun, McDonald said. Ethan went to the bathroom eventually, came out and started shooting, law enforcement officials have said.
Parents are now missing. Police cannot find them. They were supposed to be arraigned at 4pm eastern.

Tonight on Tucker Carlson's show? "Why was Alec Baldwin not more responsible with a firearm?! He's a horrible person and should be arrested."

There should be more criminal/civil actions against parents when their minor children cause harm.

They were so deep in denial about the situation they probably drowned.

I believe Tucker Carlson broadcasts from the Washington DC studio, did they check there?

On the political question, involuntary manslaughter charges for the parents make a lot more sense to me than the terrorism charge for the child. Ultimately, adults should exercise some responsibility over the conduct of their children, particularly when (as in this case) they are well aware of their struggles.

Parents still on the lam according to news reports, while their lawyers says they're not. o_O

I expect that they will be hiding out until they manage to get busted interning for Tucker Carlson.

Is it legal for 15 year old to have a handgun?
It sounds as if it is normal at least.

A fifteen year old may have a handgun, but doesn't legally own anything. All his property is in the hands of his guardian. Even though the pistol was a Christmas present from his parents, in the law, the parents are the owners of the gun and are responsible for its safety. Anything the boy does with the pistol, he does so as an agent of his parents. We even have a crime known as "contributing to the delinquency of a minor" which is basically allowing or failing to prevent a minor from committing a crime.

Adolescence in a modern society is a difficult time. It is especially difficult when one's parents are stupid to the point of apparent brain damage.

Wow, I did not know that. I thought maximum 15 year old can get is parents giving him a gun to shoot at shooting range. This is seriously fucked up.

Someone reportedly helped them hide and could face charges.

School officials maybe deserve charges too, and at least a lawsuit.

I've heard this said, but based on the account available to us through the news, I'm not really sure what more they could have done. They didn't know the kid actually had a gun on him, like the parents did. They knew about the behavior problems, and were trying to initiate a plan of of intervention, which is what you're supposed to do. It's harder to accomplish anything if the parents aren't on board though.

Well, school officials could have detected hints of bat-shit craziness in parents and then assumed the worst - that they had just bought a gun and handed it to their son.

This is expecting too much of the school. Craziness is unfortunately hard to ferret out, and bad faith/gaslighting are done oftentimes because they work, at least on 'normal people' who have not spent years studying, identifying, and disarming it. And you don't get onto a school board or survive versus one by displaying a spine against the Karen brigade.

The day before the shooting a teacher saw him searching for ammo on his phone and reported it to the school.

On the day of the shooting, all this was known:

On Nov. 30, 2021, the morning of the shooting the next day, Ethan Crumbley’s teacher came upon a note on Ethan’s desk which alarmed her to the point that she took a picture of it on her cellphone. The note contained the following: a drawing of a semiautomatic handgun, pointing at the words: “The thoughts won’t stop. Help me.” In another section of the note was a drawing of a bullet, with the following words above that bullet: “Blood everywhere.” Between the drawing of the gun and the bullet is a drawing of a person who appears to have been shot twice and bleeding. Below that figure is a drawing of a laughing emoji. Further down the drawing are the words, “My life is useless.” And to the right of that are the words, “The world is dead.”

As a result, James and Jennifer Crumbley were immediately summoned to the school. A school counselor came to the classroom and removed the shooter and brought him to the office with his backpack. Counselor obtained the drawing but the shooter had already altered it. The drawings of the gun and the bloody figure were scratched out along with the words, “Help me” and “My life is useless,” “The world is dead,” and “Blood everywhere.” Those were all altered by him.

At the meeting, James and Jennifer Crumbley were shown the drawing and were advised that they were required to get their son into counseling within 48 hours. Both James and Jennifer Crumbley failed to ask their son if he had his gun with him or where his gun was located and failed to inspect his backpack for the presence of the gun, which he had with him. James and Jennifer Crumbley resisted the idea of their son leaving the school at that time. Instead, James and Jennifer Crumbley left the high school without their son. He was returning to the classroom.

After all those blaring red flags, they just left him back into class with the backpack that had his gun in it.

Apparently nobody, not the school nor the parents, thought to look into whether he had a gun to go with that ammo he was searching for.

Well, no, they can't. Practically and legally, you can't assume and act on the worst. And there's not a lot to be done anyway. What are they going to do, suspend the kid? For how long will that solve the problem of a child who has decided on mass murder as the thing to do? What he needed was therapeutic treatment, and you have to have the parents' consent for that, or legal circumvention thereof, which takes time.

Well, I don't know if we can assume that all troubled kids might have a gun in their backpack. But it's incredibly wreckless for the parents to not check for the gun. They are gun crazies (sent a letter to editor praising Trump's protection of the second amendment); bought a gun; I'm sure knew that the son was fascinated with guns, knew he was fascinated with bullets; was having problems and they didn't suspect that he might have brought a gun to school? Parents have some splainin to do.

I have a strong feeling that school officials are in trouble now.
