Breyer, announced his retirement at the end of the current term. Breyer's announcement provides Biden the opportunity to change the demographic makeup of the conservative-leaning bench.

I find it a little odd that we have white people here who seem to think and feel they are supporting the desires of non-whites by agreeing with Biden's plan, but in fact they are largely in direct opposition to their desires, according the polls. If you are going to claim you are supportive of the needs and desires of non-whites, shouldn't you change your tune and instead advocate for Biden to consider all races and sexes for the nomination, as the majority of non-whites would prefer?

I'm skeptical of that poll. I discussed this issue with some Black female friends this morning after we worked out. They are delighted that Biden has promised to choose a highly qualified Black woman for the next SCOTUS justice. My closest friend there is excited that the sister of Stacey Abrams is on the list. I am going to try and find more info on her, since I didn't even know that Stacey had a sister who was qualified for the position. For me, it's interesting just learning about all of these well qualified women, despite the fact that only one will be chosen. I always enjoy learning more about successful women, and since most Black women have had more obstacles to deal with, than most White women have, I especially like learning more about them.

For most of my life, almost everyone in a powerful position was a white male. You apparently have no idea how happy most women are to finally see more of us in powerful positions. The courts should always reflect the diversity of the country. We're getting there, slowly but surely.

Also I’m trying to remember all the outrage when Trump promised to replace Ginsberg with another woman. Sure plenty are disgusted with his choice, and the fact that her confirmation was rammed through. But zero outrage that Trump openly stated he would replace Ginsberg with another woman.

Why?

That's a great question. My take: For the most part being conservative is based on maintaining power structures: The Church, Patriarchy, Whiteness, our Corporate Overlords. Individual conservatives vary, of course, but studies show a correlation between fear and being conservative. This is why they cling to structure and traditional power, for security and even in an idea of an afterlife. Alleged other principles about honesty or whatever are often bullshit and just used as a means to achieve an end, even though if you ask them, they have the most Honor ever. Amy Coney Barrett completely supports the power structures at the heart of conservative ideology and so she was non-threatening. Trump's choice of openly choosing a woman was also seen as a sly counter to identity politics possibly gaining moderates but also a big "you want a woman, here you go." They believe identity politics can always be used to make Democrats look bad....which is why they are now logically inconsistently trying to score political points by screaming racism.

Glynda C. Carr, Higher Heights president and CEO of Higher Heights, had more to say on the matter in a statement issued Wednesday:

“There are zero Black women on the Supreme Court, zero Black women in the Senate, zero Black women governors, and zero Black women have ever served as president of this country.

I’m sure that Sohy is as familiar with polling and statistical analysis as most people posting on this forum. Like most people, I welcome the day when race and gender will no longer be a factor in any decisions for any position anywhere. The best way to get to that point is to start recognizing and rewarding the achievements of people who have been and still are overlooked or trivialized as being ‘affirmative action hires’ rather than well qualified.

I’m not black and I don’t live on Sony’s neighborhood or state but I’m thrilled thot the next Supreme Court justice will likely be female and black. It’s about damned time.
Like Sohy, for most of my life, power has been in the hands of white men. The Supreme Court should reflect the nation. We all need to start seeing positions of power held by people of all demographics, not just white and/or male.

How? What is racist about selecting one of the several qualified black female law professionals to be on the Supreme Court?

Selecting only Black Females because only black females are superior enough would be racist. Selecting Black Females in order to pack the court to enact judicial findings that only benefit blacks would be racism. Selecting one because one hasn't ever been selected yet is about time.

One could consider the selecting one of the several qualified black female law professionals to be on the Supreme Court as prejudicial, but that'd be stretching that word's meaning as well.
