Stephen Breyer to retire at the end of this court session.

In an effort to make conservative talking heads have strokes and to hasten Clarence Thomas's retirement, he should nominate Anita Hill.
I'd prefer Al Sharpton. The intensity of the strokes would be lethal and much more widespread and we could get our country back.
Justice would be Anita Hill. That would cause enough strokes and she’d actually do well in the job. Plus, she actually went to law school.

Despite what Trumpsters think, nominations are not about revenge.

A new ABC poll shows most Americans (76%), and in fact, most Democrats (54%) are not in favor of Biden's plan to automatically nominate a black woman (as opposed to considering candidates of all races and genders) to fill the Court vacancy. Only 28% of non-white Americans want him to automatically nominate a black woman.

Majority of Americans want Biden to consider 'all possible nominees' for Supreme Court vacancy: POLL

A new ABC News/Ipsos poll finds that a plurality of Americans view the Supreme Court as motivated by partisanship, while President Joe Biden's campaign trail vow to select a Black woman to fill a high-court vacancy without reviewing all potential candidates evokes a sharply negative reaction from voters.

The ABC News/Ipsos poll, which was conducted by Ipsos in partnership with ABC News using Ipsos' KnowledgePanel, comes days after the most senior member of the Supreme Court, Justice Stephen G. Breyer, announced his retirement at the end of the current term. Breyer's announcement provides Biden the opportunity to change the demographic makeup of the conservative-leaning bench.

I find it a little odd that we have white people here who seem to think and feel they are supporting the desires of non-whites by agreeing with Biden's plan, but in fact they are largely in direct opposition to their desires, according the polls. If you are going to claim you are supportive of the needs and desires of non-whites, shouldn't you change your tune and instead advocate for Biden to consider all races and sexes for the nomination, as the majority of non-whites would prefer?
I'm skeptical of that poll. I discussed this issue with some Black female friends this morning after we worked out. They are delighted that Biden has promised to choose a highly qualified Black woman for the next SCOTUS justice. My closest friend there is excited that the sister of Stacey Abrams is on the list. I am going to try and find more info on her, since I didn't even know that Stacey had a sister who was qualified for the position. For me, it's interesting just learning about all of these well qualified women, despite the fact that only one will be chosen. I always enjoy learning more about successful women, and since most Black women have had more obstacles to deal with, than most White women have, I especially like learning more about them.

For most of my life, almost everyone in a powerful position was a white male. You apparently have no idea how happy most women are to finally see more of us in powerful positions. The courts should always reflect the diversity of the country. We're getting there, slowly but surely.

So, you question the poll because of what a few Black Friends said to you? You do realize the difference between anecdote and statistics, yes?

Also I’m trying to remember all the outrage when Trump promised to replace Ginsberg with another woman. Sure plenty are disgusted with his choice, and the fact that her confirmation was rammed through. But zero outrage that Trump openly stated he would replace Ginsberg with another woman.

Why?

That's a great question. My take: For the most part being conservative is based on maintaining power structures: The Church, Patriarchy, Whiteness, our Corporate Overlords. Individual conservatives vary, of course, but studies show a correlation between fear and being conservative. This is why they cling to structure and traditional power, for security and even in an idea of an afterlife. Alleged other principles about honesty or whatever are often bullshit and just used as a means to achieve an end, even though if you ask them, they have the most Honor ever. Amy Coney Barrett completely supports the power structures at the heart of conservative ideology and so she was non-threatening. Trump's choice of openly choosing a woman was also seen as a sly counter to identity politics possibly gaining moderates but also a big "you want a woman, here you go." They believe identity politics can always be used to make Democrats look bad....which is why they are now logically inconsistently trying to score political points by screaming racism.

Not if you ask Black women, who were non-coincidentally a major portion of Biden's voting base (and without whom he would not have taken South Carolina and stopped the Sanders steam train when he did).

Biden's Pledge To Nominate Black Female Supreme Court Nominee Exceedingly Popular With Black Women Voters, Poll Shows

The poll conducted by Higher Heights in conjunction with Change Research found that 86 percent of Black women voters support prioritizing the nomination of the first Black woman to the nation’s highest court when a vacancy next arises. This was done from January 4 to 9 among 507 Black women voters nationwide and had a margin of error of plus or minus 5.04 percent.

Glynda C. Carr, Higher Heights president and CEO of Higher Heights, had more to say on the matter in a statement issued Wednesday:

“There are zero Black women on the Supreme Court, zero Black women in the Senate, zero Black women governors, and zero Black women have ever served as president of this country.
“There is no doubt that Black women are uniquely qualified to lead in these roles, and we call on President Biden to address this major gap in representation and ensure that our country’s leadership is fully reflective of the people it serves, beginning with our nation’s highest court,” Carr said.

I think it's more important for Biden to fulfill the campaign promise he made than to pay attention to the polls. A similar promise several ex-presidents also made.

I’m sure that Sohy is as familiar with polling and statistical analysis as most people posting on this forum. Like most people, I welcome the day when race and gender will no longer be a factor in any decisions for any position anywhere. The best way to get to that point is to start recognizing and rewarding the achievements of people who have been and still are overlooked or trivialized as being ‘affirmative action hires’ rather than well qualified.

I’m not black and I don’t live on Sony’s neighborhood or state but I’m thrilled thot the next Supreme Court justice will likely be female and black. It’s about damned time.
Like Sohy, for most of my life, power has been in the hands of white men. The Supreme Court should reflect the nation. We all need to start seeing positions of power held by people of all demographics, not just white and/or male.

And finally selecting one of the many qualfied candidates because they are black and female isn’t racism or sexism. Racism and sexism is the reason no one has nominated such a person for this position ever before.

Unless you're hiring an actor or the like, if race is part of your selection criteria you're being racist. If gender is part of your selection criteria then you're being sexist.

You can't get around this by pretending you're comparing those who are otherwise equal.

Proper:

Select Name from People Order by Qualification asc limit 1

So, wait, we’re saying that a Black woman has to be the most qualified possible but for white men it’s fucking Bret Kavanagh??

His Flatulence's abysmal appointments are not a rebuttal. As far as I'm concerned they should be impeached over the SB 8 garbage.

Yes. You are comfortable that Biden, whose advisors are operating by checkboxes, will appoint a well qualified candidate. That is the she will have record of consistent fairness and be of unimpeachable moral character.

So, the million dollar question is: do you think all 200ish white men nominated and appointed were because of racism?

Or do you think that if they didn't state in advance that they were nominaing an old white guy, it's totally cool and not racist at all?

How? What is racist about selecting one of the several qualified black female law professionals to be on the Supreme Court?

Selecting only Black Females because only black females are superior enough would be racist. Selecting Black Females in order to pack the court to enact judicial findings that only benefit blacks would be racism. Selecting one because one hasn't ever been selected yet is about time.

One could consider the selecting one of the several qualified black female law professionals to be on the Supreme Court as prejudicial, but that'd be stretching that word's meaning as well.

My husband likes his dentist because she has small hands that are not hairy. Is he sexist for preferring a female dentist or was he required to search all the dentists in town looking for small, non-hairy hands?

Is a woman sexist if she prefers the person performing a gynecological exam to be female? If she prefers to talk about menstruation, pregnancy, menopause or childbirth with a woman?

Is a man sexist if he prefers the person performing a digital rectal exam to be male?

Personally for me, I just want to be certain they are a doctor! :D

I don't know what kind of man would rather have a man put a finger up his ass than a woman. <-- From the book of Navy SEALs (most likely).
