Black Jogger Gunned Down In The Street

these three need to serve a lot of time before society will be ready to take them back.
It would take a life without chances of parole amount of time for them to realize that what they did was wrong and more importantly, WHY it was wrong. They probably see themselves as a victim of a political climate and will do so until the reality of their new home sets in. These privileged dudes are thinking someone in a powerful position will bail them out soon because they are used to that bullshit.

That sentiment would outlast calls for the rapture if biology permitted it.

Edit: Think I'm wrong? Wait until an interview from prison. I won't be suprised.

Kemp is up for reelection in November. It would not serve him well to pardon these murderers. I've not known anyone who would support pardoning them for their vigilante crime.
OK.
To me, Georgia is something you drive through on your way somewhere else, like Key West. Or are forced to fly through, because you can't even get to Heaven without a layover in Atlanta. I don't pay much attention to Georgia political cycles.

But my point remains. If a politician could score political points by promising to undo the obviously excessive judgement they will. Not this year or next. But sooner than I think reasonable.

At the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist or something, life without parole sounds like a smart defense tactic. "We'll get you the utter max. You'll be out in much less than the 20 years you would otherwise get."
I could be wrong.

They almost did get some help here, because the prosecutors had reached a plea deal before the trial. But it was rejected by the judge, who didn't want her hands tied with the sentencing. They apparently wanted to serve the first 30 years of their terms in federal prison, in exchange for having to admit the murder was racially motivated. Arbery's family was adamantly against the deal, and was still angry about it today in their comments. I can see why the prosecutors would want the deal. It was far from a sure thing to get the hate crime conviction, but which was only one of the 3 charges. The other two counts were more certain, kidnapping and a weapons charge. The hate crime one was that they interfered with Arbery's rights because of his race. They had to prove that they wouldn't have done it but for Arbery being black. They did have lots of evidence of past racist comments but nothing from the day of the murder or directly at Arbery. But in the end, it was apparently a very easy verdict, the jury deliberated less than 4 hours.

I'm not a fan of Kemp. I think he's sleezy and dishonest. I just don't think it would be in his or anyone's best interest to pardon 3 men who have caused so much bad publicity for the state.
I have never understood your system of letting politicians parole prisoners. Too open for abuse and manipulation.
I am glad those 3 have been found guilty (again is it?)

More of an 'also.' Guilty of federal crime on top of the State's prosecution.

I don't understand it either. The second trial was to prove that their actions were a hate crime, a federal crime.

Sometimes someone is handed down an overly harsh sentence that might, at some point be appealed to the governor who might or might not commute a death sentence to life in prison or a long sentence to time served. Sometimes sentences are successfully appealed because over the span of a decade or two or more, society’s views on that crime have changed or because there is credible evidence that a sentence ( or verdict) was unfair.

You are probably correct that they think of themselves as victims. They are idiots, hateful, racist idiots. I just don't think any governor will pardon them under any circumstances. Nor will I lose any sleep over them having to spend the rest of their lives in prison.

When I said I don't believe in prison without a chance of parole for violent criminals, I was mostly thinking of when a former violent prisoner becomes frail and old, or is senile, and no longer a threat to society. At that point, it seems stupid, unnecessary and maybe even cruel to me to keep them in prison. If they don't have family to care for them in old age, their is always the alternate prison, aka, nursing homes. :pThey are cheaper than prison and the care is hopefully a bit better than holding such individuals in a prison infirmary. While, it's been abused frequently, one of our country's ideals is supposed to be that we don't provide cruel and unusual punishment, Sadly, we have ended up with what is probably the cruelest prison system in the Western world, and it's gotten worse in my lifetime After decades in a prison cell as punishment, what is the point of holding such people even longer? Do we have to lower ourselves to the level of the criminal and extract revenge like some versions of Bible God?

Without meaning to start an argument over free will, I see each individual as a product of their genetic and environmental influences. We all become who we are due to those influences, imo. So, while I feel disgust for people like these three, a part of me realizes that any of us could be like them if we had the exact same influences. So, considering that, it's hard for me to justify cruel treatment. At the same time, it's very sad that we have so many messed up, hateful humans. I just don't like revenge, but that's just me.

Capital punishment, imo, is giving society the green light to commit the same crime as the criminal. "Revenge is mine, saith the Lord!" I hate that. I know it's idealist but I don't support revenge. It's fine to have some retribution, but I would prefer to give criminals the opportunity for rehab. Just like they were influenced to become the harmful haters who they are, rehab sometimes influences a person to move in the opposite direction, to atone for their crimes, to realize the harm they have done, assuming they don't suffer from sociopathy, but I'm going way off topic. We can both agree that justice was served when these men were prosecuted and found guilty.

You know how congresscritters pass laws that they know won't make it thru the chambers, to score points thru meaningless posturing?

I could see A Gov pardoning these idiots of state crimes, but gosh shucks, they're still serving the fed's sentence. Can't be helped, darn, oh well, vote for me, i tried.
While telling the other voters "it's more significant that thry're punished for the Hate Crime. That's the problem we need to fight. And look, now it's feds paying for incarceration, not our state! Fiscal responsibility. "

At the same time, the next GOP candidate will be Bonespurs or his clone, making a campaign promise to free all political prisoners from Biden's regime....

Probably should start rumors thst the GOP candidate at either level will pardon them to get the vote out.

I guess I just don't see it in any governor's best interest to pardon these men. I haven't heard any of Georgia's Republican politicians say anything supportive of them. Sure, the direction that the country is taking, I guess anything could happen. But, for now, I think there are plenty of other idiotic things that our Republican politicians can use to stir up their base, rather than being supporting of 3 violent men who shot down an innocent man. It's not like Marjorie Taylor Greene is our governor!

Depends on their calculus. I mean, Ammon Bundy is running for Governor. if people like him are throwing hats in the rings, incombents are going to face diffuculties.
Both candidates and incumbents can use the same rhetoric (Dr. Seuss! Knees! The YouCrane! FASEMAKS!!), so the governor's advantage is stuff he can actually do. Pardon's don't require a cooperative Senate....

At the risk of destroying your faith in humanity...
The current GOP leadership blew off the Constitution to politicize the SCOTUS. In order to give a weak candidate a political football to use in the campaign.

True, but if my memory serves me correctly, Kemp barely won when he ran. If he thinks pardoning this racist jackasses will improve his chances of re-election, then I think there should be a mass exodus from GA.

I'm not necessarily talking about Kemp.

Perhaps a Republican vying for nomination. Who knows, in the wacky world of modern American politics. Nor am I talking about the current election cycle. Maybe the next governor.

Every state already has reasons for mass exodus. That's not much of a political threat to anybody.
Tom

ETA ~I've been listening to Californian Conservatives talk about how horrible California is. Stupid government, sky high prices, for over 20 years. And they're still there complaining, today.~

Well, if someone running for governor promises pardons, they are not paying attention to their overall electorate.

Nonsense. For example.,what reasons would Hawaii or North Carolina or Idaho or Utah have a mass exodus?

the doctor, excuse me, "Doctor" they put in charge of the state's Covid 19 response sells Ivermectin prescriptions....
Isn;t that what doctors do for a living? sell prescription drugs... you pay them to examine you, and then you go to the drugstore and pickup your prescription... SOP.

My dad & grandfather were pharmacists. I now how it works.
There's the little niggling detail of FDA approval, though. And giving a conspiracy theorist the keys is right up there with giving a howler monkey a bullhorn.
