I don’t see any strategic value to the pick; he’s just another white nutbag from a state that Biden had no shot to win.

He's young and inexperienced in politics. I can see why tptb (which is not Trump) would nudge Vance forward. I think it helps a bit to muddy the waters that he shares a name with unrelated persons prominent in earlier administrations (Cyrus Vance, Cyrus Vance Jr.) No voters will not remember exactly who those men are/were but the name will seem familiar and that's comforting. I absolutely know that all of these reasons are stupid but here we are.

He said some choice anti-Trump words in the past, but if Ted Cruz and Lindsey Graham have taught us anything, it's thaat all you gotta do is bend the knee and all is forgiven in MAGA world.

He even said that Trump might be America's Hitler!!
I wish to apologize to the nation, as an Ohioan, for this Buckeye asshat. (But Trump and Vance do deserve each other.)

The classic tactic is to select a VP who is an attack dog. I haven't seen that in a while but this is what Vance is. Both Trump and Vance will make tons of noise together. Every day. Multiple times a day. BUT I believe the tactic is supposed to be that the Presidential candidate acts mature and above the fray while the VP candidate does dirty work. I just can't see Trump maintaining that he's "Teh Unifier" for very long... Thus, my prediction of how this will spiral into our next phase of Idiocracy.

He's young, popular, articulate, and has that rare advantage of not being associated by the public with the Washington "Elites" despite being on most of their dinner invite lists. What more could you ask for in an electoral side-chick?

Truly a man who will help bring America together in this time of crisis.

(Sarcasm).

And he can bring his own knee pads!

How did it come to be that both the Presidential and VP candidates for the Republican Party wear makeup? Or rather, how do Republican voters just not say anything about it, but still engage in the worship when they're completely against this sort of thing?

Vance probably still has plenty of contempt for Trump as I expect most of the Heritage Foundation folks do as well. But Trump is a means to an end for them. They got their judges. They got their first billionaire tax cut in 2017. They've got courts and GOP congress that want to eviscerate labor and environmental protection enforcement and personal liberty. Vance can just say that he has seen the light and changed his mind about Trump and that will be good enough for the GOP base to ignore everything he said about Trump being a fraud and horrible person.

JD Vance is a true believer. Also, being less than a 2 yr Senator, while the position of VP small, it is bigger than his political clout. Also, the VP will likely be more busy in this Administration if they win and fire most of the Executive Branch.

I dunno that he was the "best" choice in the sense of best for Donald personally. But as an expedient to get himself elected, Vance has been an obvious choice for a while. In the longer term, if Trump wins, JD might get a little more ambitious than Donald would prefer. Four years hence, if there is an election JD would almost certainly try to unseat the boss. Term limits will be tested, and if Donald is alive he will almost certainly cling to power just as desperately as he is seeking it right now.

Jeff Stein on X: "Hearing A LOT of alarm ..." / X
Hearing A LOT of alarm today among GOP donors & Reaganite conservative types about JD Vance

On trade, taxes, unions, antitrust — he’s signaled sharp departure from traditional conservatism, despite venture capitalist roots

Now he’s heir apparent for the party, & Reaganites fear being shut out

Vance had troubled them by:

— Praising Biden FTC pick Lina Khan
— Suggesting openness to higher corporate taxes
— Backing Trump’s major tariffs & trade barriers
— Being tied to Oren Cass’s pro industrial & family policy group
— Visiting UAW picket line

OTOH plenty of reason to feel these fears are overstated

Vance has:
— Given no indication he’ll resist Trump plans on cutting corporate taxes & the rich, deregulating businesses
— Rejected PRO Act
— Signed Grover Norquist’s tax pledge
— Tied himself to billionaire Peter Thiel
and noting
"What they're trying to do is tap into white working-class cultural and social signifiers, while doing as little as possible to actually reduce incomes at the top and actually redistribute them down. It's a delicate game they play," said Matt Bruenig, co-founder of the People's Policy Project, which advances left-wing policies. "Obviously, it's going to miss the welfare state, it's going to miss tax- based redistribution these things that are essential to creating an egalitarian society.'
