Police Misconduct Catch All Thread

The cop’s saying “what else would we do?” Highlights the issues with police training that need addressing in this country.

I don't think it is a training problem with this guy, it is a recruitment problem. This guy is a fucking psycho.
That's what I was thinking. Aren't prospective cops supposed to undergo a psychiatric evaluation first thing? I seem to recall hearing that it is getting so hard to find decent LE recruits that some areas have been softening the pysch evaluation criteria.

Training should help identify the psychos that slip through the initial evaluation process.

Officials release video of officer fatally shooting Sonya Massey in her home after she called 911

Illinois officials and President Joe Biden spoke after bodycam video of the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey was released by Illinois State Police Monday afternoon. The video shows the chaotic scene after a sheriff's deputy shot Massey in the face during a tense moment over a pot of water in her home.

Sangamon County Sheriff's Deputy Sean Grayson has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and official misconduct. He is being held in the Sangamon County Jail while he awaits trial.

"(The video) is going to shock the conscience of America. It is that senseless, that unnecessary, that unjustifiable, that unconstitutional," civil rights attorney Ben Crump said. "This sheriff's deputy was twice as large as Sonya. Why would you have to use a gun to shoot her in the head?"

Authorities said Massey, who is Black, called 911 in the early morning hours on Saturday, July 6, to report a suspected prowler outside her house in Springfield, Illinois.
Video won't play for me.

However, if she really had the pot of boiling water above her head that's a big issue.

Also,

Jimmy Crawford, who was the first of Massey's family and friends to arrive at the scene of the shooting, said at first officers suggested it was a neighbor who had a previous dispute with Massey who shot her, and then later suggested the shooting was self-inflicted.

Massey's oldest son, Malachi, said no one from law enforcement ever told the family who actually shot Massey. He didn't learn until he saw it on the news the next day.

She did not. She had the pot over the sink, and was not making any threatening move. She replied to something he said with”I rebuke you in the name of Jesus” in a calm voice, no yelling or threatening tone. He drew his gun, she put her hands up and dropped down, he fired. Then he lied to the other cop that she was ‘coming at him’

Also he was the one that sent her to the stove to tend the pot.

It appears that when she first approached the pot (as instructed by the officer), she placed it in the sink and turned on the water. Adding cold water to boiling water stops it from boiling, according to basic science. Then in a panic, after she initially dropped to the floor & the officer's aggression peaked, she appeared to grab the pot from the sink. It's unclear if she threw the pot towards the officer, but by then, it was no longer boiling water. The sound of running water can still be heard as background noise to her choking on her own blood.

But let me guess, some people will see her reaching for the pot as justification for the officer's actions.

They didn't even need to enter the home. There was absolutely no reason for them to go inside or remain if they felt unwelcome. Both officers should have taken that rebuke in Jesus' name as an invitation to leave. Instead, one of them explicitly admitted he was going to shoot her in the face & closed the gap between them to do precisely that. Then followed up with delaying medical treatment. First-degree murder charges make sense.

The cop, Sean Grayson has a checkered past;

The terminated Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office deputy involved in the shooting death of a woman who called for 911 assistance worked at six different law enforcement agencies in the last four years, state records obtained by WGN’s Nexstar sister station show. Since August of 2020, Sean Grayson worked less than one year at the Auburn (Ill.) Police Department, one year at the Logan County (Ill.) Sheriff’s Office, and then just over a year with the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office, the records obtained by WCIA show. He was also employed with police departments in Virden, Kincaid and Pawnee. Grayson was arrested twice for Class A misdemeanor DUIs, once in 2015 and once in 2016.

News

I'm sure there had to be signs that Grayson was a raging psycho.

The officers did need to inform the victim of the results of their efforts and to check if she was alright. But that does not justify or excuse their subsequent actions.

The fact this killer had s hard time staying in one police force for any significant period of time should have been a gigantic red flag to his hiring.

If I'm allowed to speculate like those who didn't watch the video speculate that she raised a pot of boiling hot water over her head. All of that was established outside. It was when Officer Murder decided he needed to get her ID—presumably to see if her name matched what he ran on the vehicle he was fixated on—that things escalated. I think he got annoyed because she wasn't making it easy for him to racially profile her.

Edit: You know, because she has to be the owner of a vehicle that might have code violations. She's black!
