What TV are you watching and how would you rate it? [Revive from FRDB]

Sony Bravia OLED 4K 55 inch. Picture so good some 4K content almost looks 3D.

Regular $1500 but Best Buy had it on sale for a grand so I snatched it up.

I like the OLEDs too.

It was January 2021 thought that I had* to stay at my parents vacant house and I brought my usual DVDs. A lot of Harry Potters especially. It was then that it became so obvious that while todays flat screen TV have great pictures, the speakers suck. I was watching on my parent's late generation Sony tube TV and the speakers were so much better. I was hearing stuff I never heard on my flat screens.

Since then I don't listen with the TV's speakers. Now in my basement room I have some powered psb speakers with a subwoofer attached to the LG C2 OLED via optical. Upstairs is a soundbar and sub.

* I had been visiting my mom in assisted living and next day I got a call that she had covid and I'd been with her for hours. So I packed and left with Walle and spent a week at the old house until I could get a test. My N95 protected me.

Rebecca, a Hitchcock film, from 1940.

I guess I can recommend it for film history buffs. Surprisingly good for its era?

Special effects sometimes impress, sometimes fail, and sometimes make you say, "Look, a special effect."

One major character has no motive, no basis for the way he or she behaves. She gives a false motive, but after it is exposed as false, we never get a real motive. One could call that realistic, I suppose, since we don't get to know why people do things in real life.

Just started the Man in the High Castle. Two episodes in, looks promising.
I liked it overall. However, it is a very slow burn though and they make a few choices in the plot that were unnecessarily convoluted to full-on unnecessary and stupid.

Since Southpark has been doing a great job of satirizing Trump and his ass lickers, we've been watching each new episode and enjoying each one a lot. This last one was that Trump was fucking Satan. Each one has been very funny and in the world in which we live in, we all need a good laugh.

Rewatching the old Beast Wars animated series from 1996. Loved this series when I was a kid and ReBoot. Have to rewatch ReBoot after.

The housekeeper is a lesbian, the narrator is a golddigger, and Max is just sort of a jerk. It's completely impossible to determine what Rebecca was, due to several equally plausible but contradictory characterizations suggested by those who knew her.

Have been bingeing Firefly for the last few days.

Then I'll binge Hustle.
I liked Leverage better, a rare case of the US version improving on the original British concept.

Firefly is just sad. A great show that was fucked by Fox. Want to have my daughter watch it, but it is too mature for her still. Also will not like the torture or reavers.

Same here. Waiting for my daughter to get a little older. She has liked all of my other favorite movies so far (she’s going as the man in black from Princess Bride for Halloween this year!)

I'm watching Evil Season 1 (2019); I'm in the middle of Episode 8. I'm not sure if I'll watch more seasons, but I am enjoying season 1. It gets high ratings: 7.8 IMDB and 96% Tomatoes. Those scores may be slightly too high, but I like it better than most of the TV and movies I've been watching lately.

The story is about demonic possessions but one needn't believe in a supernatural fiction to enjoy it. I do NOT like horror, but the horror here is kept very mild. The story is fun with engaging plots and excellent acting. (There was only one actor I recognized, but I couldn't place him. Google showed me he was Aasif from The Daily Show!)

It's not much of a Spoiler to say that the three top characters form a team to combat demons. Two of the three on the team don't believe in demons! The female psychologist maps the "demonic possessions" to known psychological maladies. When she mentioned the  Dancing_plague_of_1518 in episode 10 I decided to fact-check; I clicked Pause and Googled. And as you see, Wikipedia knows of this.

I'm totally hooked on CNN's "Have I got news for you". It's hosted by Roy Wood jr. and it's hilarious. You can stream it on HBO Max or watch in on CNN at 9PM Saturdays. It's in it's third season, I think and I hope this one will be longer than the last two. It's based on a British show.

Roy Wood Jr, Amber Ruffin, and Michael Ian Black are all returning for the show’s third season. “Now that we know that none of us will be pope, we proudly announce our return for Season 3 of Have I Got News For You this fall,” the trio joked in a joint statement.

Premiering in September 2024, the American adaptation of the long-running British series has been well-received by critics and audiences alike.

Airing on what has traditionally been a dead night for cable news, Have I Got News For You has been a strong ratings performer for CNN on Saturday nights, where it has often outperformed the network’s weekday primetime shows. The show also streams the next day on Max (er, HBO Max).

Though it’s not technically a late-night show (since it airs at 9pm), late night is in HIGNFY‘s DNA, and its success has been a rare glimmer of hope at a time of contraction for the time period. (The show is staffed with quite a few late night vets, including most prominently host Wood, along with Ruffin and Black, who serve as the show’s team captains.)

The British version is better. Paul Merton is a god.
