What TV are you watching and how would you rate it? [Revive from FRDB]

I hated Silo.

Any current TV series or movie that uses the term "The Before Times" screams lazy and bad writing. The whole show was stupid and insufferable. I got through three episodes because I wanted to like it. Dedicated, die-hard Sci-Fi nerds tried to defend it, but even they lost interest in it.
That makes me feel better about not seeing it. I really enjoyed the books.

Alien Earth

There are some things that I wish would be done different e.g. the monster absolutely shredding an entire room full of people in seconds, but completely failing to similarly dispose of another character because that character is important to the plot.
I noticed that. The technical term is “plot armor”.
Yeah, it's expensive to avoid, but well worth it. A good writer will put in the hard work to develop a detailed, relatable, and heroic character, and then just as the audience have decided he is centrally important, he is suddenly killed. Ned Stark in Game of Thrones is a good example of this.

It's really hard on an author though, and the temptation to bring back that character as a ghost, deus ex machina, or even just in endless unproductive flashbacks, is strong. Worse even than flashbacks is a prequel; Obi Wan Kenobi was a far better character dead in the first movie, and even as a ghost in the next two, than he was alive in three (omg do we really need three?!?) prequels.

Poirot and the two series based off of Miss Marple. I know there are a number of complaints about the Marples, but they are at minimum watchable. And Poirot is generally excellent.

It may not be to everyone's taste, but many do find it entertaining.

I couldn't get into the novels, but enjoyed the videos.

Right now I'm hooked on the White Lotus series. Rich Folks playtime resort drama. 🫤

I have not read the books but I enjoyed the first season the show. The second was a bit of a let down though.

I haven’t gone back far into this thread but is anyone else watching The Three Body Problem? Has anyone read the books?

I’m two episodes into the series, which, by coincidence, began right after I started the first book. I did not yet get far into the book—the first chapter was really rough.

God, I hope the struggle sessions aren't on their way back in...
That was my first thought and why I stopped ( temporarily) reading. It chilled me to the core because I could see it happening here.

The series has moved past that part or at least the gruesome aspects of it and into a period of time years later —but there are still references.

I have to say that this is an intriguing book/series.

I loved the books. Haven't seen the TV series though.
Having barely started the first book, I cannot compare or comment on how faithful the series is but the series is really good—draws you in and makes you think. I do NOT find it bingeable because I want to think abd process what happened in each episode before I start the next.

Peacemaker (Season 2)

Uh-oh.

I've only seen the first episode, but the entire vibe has changed. The first season was fun, crazy, sleazy, violent, redemptive, and always clever.
Even the opening credits were worth watching every time.

Now the opening sequence is a poor imitation of the first. It just doesn't work, especially compared to the first season:

New Season:

It appears it's going to be much more dramatic and serious, which sucks because the first season premiered in January of 2022.

I'll keep watching though. Different doesn't always mean bad, but disappointment is looming.

Star Trek - Strange New Worlds

Finished season one. I like it in part. Struggles with too many we're all going to die episodes. It'd been helped by having the old school length season for character development. It also felt a bit rushed for 10 episodes. But good enough to get Season 2 a go.
Near the end of Season 3. It looks great, like the characters. But the show at times gets a bit lost and some of the episodes make little sense. And if the seasons are only going to be 10 episodes long, let's nix the homage episodes to one or so. I want Strange New Worlds, not remasters of what I've already seen.

I just finished Lioness Season 1, a "spy thriller." I was very disappointed despite the 7.8 IMDB rating -- I'll give it 6.1 -- and am very unlikely to bother with Season 2.

I love many spy thriller movies, and some spy thriller series (e.g. The Americans and Smiley's People) but this one annoyed me: many plot elements were irrelevant, unrealistic, far-fetched, exaggerated and/or contrived. A good spy story or thriller will have 1 or 2 personal elements, developed only slightly just to let the characters seem human. But the story in Lioness is just one exaggerated comic-book event after another. It pretends to give a look into high-level decision making, but all we see is confusion and incompetence. Do not waste time on this series.

I like Nicole Kidman; it's too bad she wasted her time here, and just for a minor role.

What TV are you watching and how would you rate it? [Revive from FRDB]

I'm watching a LG C2 TV and it's great.
As the originator of this thread on FRDB, allow me to commiserate with you about the poor choice of thread title. About once a month, someone will saunter along and describe their television (Sony 45 inch, blah) and how they would rate it. They'll do this with the "I both take things hyper-literally AND am completely ignorant of context" style of "humor" that serves as a back-handed criticism of your inattention to proper thread title verbiage.

IT NEVER GETS OLD!

I am watching a Panasonic Viera TH-P46S10A TV, and it still has excellent picture and sound quality, despite being four years older than when I first posted about it; So you are correct, it really doesn't ever get old. 9/10, would recommend.
That TV is now eight years older - a full dozen years older than when I first rated it in this thread - and it is still going strong!

Presumably this model long since went out of production, but if you are looking for a second hand TV that will go the distance, I can strongly recommend it.

@James Brown, it seems that you were overly pessimistic, as the frequency of such posts is only about one every six years or so.

Nevertheless, it doesn't get old (unlike my trusty Panasonic Viera TH-P46S10A, which is now practically old enough to vote).

I have three old crappy TVs, none of which is large enough to make split screens worth a damn. Now some channels are showing like, four football games at once, and they might as well be on an iWatch.

I had no idea that this was a thing.

I have seen TVs that let you split the screen for yourself, and watch two channels at the same time (though I can't see the benefit myself); But having a single channel do it seems completely bizarre to me.

If two footy matches are on at the same time, typically there will be a channel for each - Channel 9 might show one, with the other on their subsidiary channel 9Gem, for example. All of the free to air broadcasters split into several subsidiaries when broadcasts went digital, and the cable channels always had lots of sub-channels.

I can't really follow two matches at once, if there were four, I would definitely switch to a channel that was only showing one.

Oh I knew what the tread was supposed to be about when I saw that the first post mentioned Stargate SG-1, an excellent show by the way.

But I decided to answer the question in the title of the thread anyway.
