The Race For 2028

If the Democrats could get someone who isn't beholden/hostage to the left/right/big money/big tech/nutters/party machine of all types then they might have a chance.

Oh. I see the problem.

Well, someone that I enjoyed watching bash Trump, a solid liberal Democrat. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker is a multi-billionaire.
I guess that he'd not be beholden to big money except for his own.
He looks encouraging.

He does have big money behind him even if family owned.

The last thing the US needs is another billionaire in charge.

Dens’ best bet might be Beshear or Kelly. I wouldn’t call either a mediocrity or a hack, contra what I wrote above.
I like Mark Kelly. I think he could win abd do a great job.
Kelly was an astronaut. So, he is capable of just about anything. But I see him more as a VP than a Presidential Candidate. It is always difficult to tell this far out. The electorate, the state of the nation, whether we actually have an election are all going to likely have a heavy influence on the 2028 election. The Democrats have a lot of options. But it could be a real shit show, much like 2009, when Obama gets to inherit the worst economy since the Great Depression. But this time, it'll be the results of the previous "Republican" President who drained our energy reserves and gave us higher inflation that is now getting cooked permanently into pricing.

Gretchen Whitmer, the present governor of Michigan, has been brought up as a candidate several times. She has always stated she is not interested in the presidency but she'll be out of her job soon. I think she's done a pretty good job for us here in Michigan so I hope she will reconsider.

Kelly is a mature but not elderly white man. He’s been married a long time, has taken care of his wife after she was shot and has served as a US Senator. Plus the astronaut part. Plus he was elected as the first Senator to hold that seat since 1962. The only stumbling block I can see is his firearms stance. His wife is Jewish and he is good friends with an Israeli astronaut. Those two things are the good thing/bad thing column, depending on how you see things.

He was raised by two police officers and came up through the Merchant Marines. So nice middle class background. His wife’s shooting triggered a strong embrace of religious faith.

I’m struggling to find negatives in terms of appeal to the electorate.

Personally? I'm thinking he could be the biggest thing in the way and not wanting to go that route. And charisma, he doesn't have it. Kind of falls into the 'would be a great President, but not a great leader' sort of thing. Think the opposite of Reagan.

almost any Dem would be a vast improvement over any Repbug.
I been mulling over the fate of the R party in a post-Felon environment. Will it splinter into two factions? I could see one faction trying to continue The Felon’s lawlessness and attacks upon democracy, and another one “correcting” itself to pre-trump/bush conservatism while aggressively distancing itself from Trump’s fetid legacy.
Would one such faction prevail over the other, or would the entire party devolve into one huge squabble-fest?
Hard to envision the wreckage left behind by Trump, ever rising to the level of a serious political party.
Thoughts?
That was the hope following Obama's 2012 re-election. There was some introspection within the GOP, but it was quickly quelled and then we ended up with Trump. The lesson of winning by doubling and tripling down is not lost on them.

The best that can be hoped for is they're less extreme, but considering how extreme they are now, that may not mean much.

I believe that to be true. But a cult of personality without the personality… is just a cult. Trump trumps all his sycophants because he really truly believes his delusions and lies, and especially his whole fantasy self-image as the greatest super-intelligence in the universe.
The Mule, in short.
Real true belief in one’s superiority over all others, in all regards and regardless of evidence, is hard to fake consistently.

I don’t think the GOP can assemble an effective coalition of actual voters any time soon. Whether that will matter, is an entirely different question.

Of course, a lot of tech bros are race nationalists, that is true, but I am talking about the average person who lives in rural America, is racist, and has little or no knowledge of technocracy and is likely to oppose data centers. A real overlap here is that a great many people on the so-called right and left oppose data centers and the rise of AI.
I have friends who live in rural America and one is a white woman married to a black man. The other one is former poster Jobar, so I'm not so sure that the average rural dweller is racist.

There are plenty of racists in cities, especially in the Northeast, which is much more segregated compared to Georgia. For example, my sister lives in a town in NJ that doesn't have a single black resident. My neighborhood is about 70/30 white to black. It should be about 50/50 imo to match the local demographics. My black neighbors are the best and some of my neighbors are also in mixed race marriages. The more integrated an area becomes, the less racist it usually becomes. ( usually, not always )

There are a couple of MAGA cult members in my neighborhood that might be racists, but I don't know them personally. I just know they still have their fucking Trump signs on the lawn. One has several crosses near the Trump sign. Perhaps they are hoping for a White Christian theocracy.

I agree that the one thing that unites both sides is the mutual hatred of data centers. In some areas, power bills are skyrocketing, leaving low income people to have their power cut off.

That is exactly what happened, at least among the intellectual right. Then come 2016, they were the ones saying 'okay, a vote for Trump in November, but only because it helps with the judicial appointments'. Now people like Dennis Prager sound like Sean Hannity for Trump.
The best that can be hoped for is they're less extreme, but considering how extreme they are now, that may not mean much.
The problem is that the Heritage Foundation is getting everything they want at this point. And with Loper-Bright, the regulatory/administrative state has been effectively repealed. So even if the Democrats get to 55 seats in the Senate, they can only try to limit the blood loss.

Do not worry. Someone will come along and find those 'negatives' for you.

My mother always told me charisma is a pathetic substitute for intellect and character. Have seen nothing to say she was incorrect.

I really like Beshear. I've seen him interviewed. I think he's very smart and realistic, without acting like an asshole. The fact that he's easily won twice as governor in a bright red state is very impressive. If he runs, I'll vote for him in the primaries. I also think Shapiro could be a good candidate as PA isn't exactly blue and he's been the governor there twice, I think. I would like to see a governor run as I think having that type of administrative experience is important, especially after the mess the current idiot has made. Having said that, almost any Dem would be a vast improvement over any Repbug.
Beshear does a podcast every Saturday.

Are you sure she wasn’t consoling you for your utter lack of charisma?

(I’ll show myself out) - pls do. You are not worth throwing out.
Is it that obvious?

I did a lot of reading about him the other day and while he is considered a moderate by most people, I found his views and what he has done for Kentucky to align with what is usually considered fairly progressive by US standards. I really like him and most of his policies. I think he'd be a good president. He has the experience and demeanor to help us move on from the mess we are in currently. Sure, it will probably take a couple of decades to move us out of this, and all of the things going on here and in Europe these days make it hard to have any hope, but it doesn't hurt to have a little bit of positivity in such dark times.

Then again, maybe it is the end of the world as we know it.....

But that doesn't mean that charisma doesn't matter (see Ronald Reagan). It's arguably the most important factor, especially in a national election.

I thought and still think that Hillary might've been the most qualified person to ever run for office given her background/experience, but on a scale of 1-10 her charisma was a 5 at best. Had she been more charismatic I don't think that election is ever close. Good on the Dems for running the most qualified candidate, but about half of Americans are, let's face it, about as deep as a dinner plate when it comes to even knowing whether someone is qualified for office.

I'll never forget "He's someone I could sit down and have a beer with" with respect to Dubbya.

The Dems don't need to run the most qualified person to win the POTUS election. They need the most charismatic.
