2023 House vote for speaker

"We're open to that": AOC floats speaker deal with GOP after talks with Matt Gaetz and Paul Gosar | Salon.com - "Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Democrats would be interested if they can get some committee chair assignments"

Ursula Perano on Twitter: ".@AOC tells me a few mins ago that she wouldn’t outright rule out working w/ Rs to resolve the speaker battle, but McCarthy would not be a unity candidate + Ds would need more concessions than just things like committee ratios.

Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur said in an interview that she's open to voting for Rep. Kevin McCarthy for House speaker.

"I wish I could be part of some kind of a unity caucus that would yield him the votes."

"I'm a Democrat, but I have many Republicans in our district. And not that we would agree with him on everything, but at least let the man become speaker," Rep. Marcy Kaptur told a reporter.

Former Rep. Fred Upton, who has been floated as a potential bipartisan consensus choice for speaker, is not ruling out the proposition — even though the House has never picked a speaker who isn't also a member.

“I haven’t ruled that out,” Upton tells @NBCNews. “But we’re a long way from getting to that point.”
Upton says he still supports Rep. McCarthy but the deadlock "shows that you got real problems.”

Democratic Caucus Chair, Rep. Pete Aguilar, D-Calif., threw cold water on the idea of a pro-McCarthy Democratic compromise before the chamber's session.

"We would look at that, but I haven't seen any proof that Republicans are willing to engage," he told reporters at a press conference.

But some GOP members have raised the potential for negotiations.

Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., told CNN's Jim Sciutto that Republicans were already in "preliminary talks" with Democrats on a possible consensus candidate for House Speaker. Bacon reportedly mentioned possible concessions that could be made to Democrats, including skewing committee ratios more favorably for Democrats.

Matt Gaetz sent letter to Capitol architect accusing Kevin McCarthy of squatting in speaker’s office | Salon.com - "Gaetz's opposition to McCarthy grew even pettier on Tuesday after the GOP leader moved into Pelosi's old office"

AOC Discusses Drama Surrounding Kevin McCarthy's Speakership Bid On MSNBC's Alex Wagner Tonight Show - YouTube last Tuesday

She said that there were reports of up to 20 anti-KMC rebels on the Republican side, and she expected a lot of negotiations in the last day or two before a vote.

Then about her conversations with Matt Gaetz and Paul Gosar. She said that the Democrats would be standing firm. She also said that there was not a proper race for Speaker with other R's challenging KMC. She then said that Jim Jordan doesn't want the job, something that seems to be correct about him.

She then gave these anti-KMC rebels some credit for wanting rules that would make the House more democratic, by diluting the Speaker's power. From there, she moved on to how it's important for the Democrats to be united against the Republicans, because a little bit of division in the R's' ranks can be used against them.

Cori Bush Says Republicans Are Using Byron Donalds As Prop | HuffPost Latest News

Cori Bush on Twitter: "FWIW, @ByronDonalds is not a historic candidate for Speaker. He is a prop. Despite being Black, he supports a policy agenda intent on upholding and perpetuating white supremacy.

Byron Donalds on Twitter: "FWIW, nobody asked @CoriBush her opinion on the matter. Before you judge my agenda, let's have a debate over the policies and the outcomes. Until then, don't be a crab in a barrel!" / Twitter

Back to HuffPost, quoting CB:
“My issue is not with Byron Donalds himself. My issue is not with him being Black. My issue is not with him being Republican. My issue is because he was not someone that they have been promoting for the last two years,” Bush said.

...
The congresswoman noted that in claiming to be sincerely promoting Donalds, GOP lawmakers spoke about his niceness, background ― like Jeffries, Donalds is from New York ― and his past struggles.

“It seems as if they’re using him as a prop, as a tool, not because they think that he’s great, that he’s done all of these things to lead them,” Bush said. “I don’t like that they’re using him that way. I don’t want them to use him that way. And I want him to understand: They’re only using you... don’t let them do that to you. Make them treat you with dignity and respect.”

She continued: “To hear Chip Roy stand up and say this is not about color ... it absolutely 100% is because if you were nominating him on his worth and merit, I think none of us would have been surprised because we would have seen him do leadership things.”

The congresswoman deflected conservative criticism of her remarks.

“I’m glad they took offense because it shows their lack of knowledge. It shows how ignorant they are. I need them to read up and understand what white supremacy is, what it looks like, and what the patriarchal system looks like,” Bush added.

“So, if I’m going to use your words, and your methodology and your math, isn’t it time for you to pack it in and your side to pack it in considering he has over 200 and you have 20?” Hannity asked.

“Sean, I understand the frustration, I promise you, but ... ,” said Boebert, before Hannity cut her off.

“I’m not frustrated. You didn’t answer any question,” Hannity replied before the two went into a tense back and forth.

Boebert later suggested she could nominate Trump as speaker. The position has always been held by a member of the House, but being a member of the body isn’t a requirement to receive a nomination, PBS reported.

“Is this a game show?” Hannity asked after he interrupted Boebert.

“No, no, no ... ,” Boebert replied.

″We’re going to pick Jim Jordan one day, [Byron] Donalds the other day, Trump the next day?” Hannity added.

In the 8th round, so far Boebert and Brecheen have voted for Kevin Hern of Oklahoma. Hern voted for McCarthy. Douchebag Gaetz voted for Trump again.

'A Disaster': Speaker Fight Exposes GOP Leadership Vacuum | HuffPost Latest News

Donald Trump:
“Do not turn a great triumph into a giant & embarrassing defeat,” Trump warned in all-caps on his social media platform Wednesday morning, urging the 20 or so insurgents to “close the deal” and back Kevin McCarthy.
Without any success.
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich warned that the anti-McCarthy Republicans were “playing with fire.”

“This is the greatest danger we’ve had as a party since 1964,” Gingrich said in an interview, referring to the Republican National Convention that saw moderates facing off against conservative insurgents. The Republican base, he said, is "watching chaos in the House and they're watching the potential for a Never-Trump and an Always-Trump collision that could be devastatingly divisive.”
Referring to LBJ defeating Barry Goldwater, who was supported by right-wing activists.
“This is a disaster for the Republicans,” Fox News host Steve Doocy said Wednesday on “Fox & Friends.” Sean Hannity said Tuesday night that House Republicans “are now on the verge of becoming a total clown show if they’re not careful.”

...
“What I’m hearing from grassroots Republicans, donors, candidates and even federal elected officials is that there’s a significant leadership vacuum on the Republican side,” said Harmeet Dhillon, a California attorney who is challenging Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel to lead the party's organizing committee.

Dhillon declined to issue an endorsement in the speaker's election, noting only that “there’s a feeling that the old guard doesn’t get it.”

...
Much of the dysfunction plaguing the current-day GOP is linked to the party's embrace of Trump's slash-and-burn politics and the former president's weakened political standing. McCarthy exemplifies that model, having traveled to Mar-a-Lago in early 2021 to visit Trump after the Jan. 6 insurrection — a move that helped cement Trump's political resuscitation and was widely seen as part of an effort by McCarthy to bolster his speaker bid.
House Democrats ought to bring plenty of 🍿 with them.

Some other R pols on this drama llama:

NH Gov Chris Sununu:
“Should we really be surprised that a bunch of morons in Congress are holding things up? Of course not,” Sununu said in a statement.
Departing MD Gov Larry Hogan:
“Republicans are hungry for meat-and-potato conservative results from the new majority in Washington like Republican governors are already delivering, but all they're getting is a handful of mixed nuts,” Hogan said. "It's time to move past this circus and show the country that we can govern with competence and common sense."
Former NJ Gov Chris Christie:
“We need to have this fight out in public. We need to have it out loud. And we need to then resolve it,” Christie said in an interview. "This is what happens when you’re a party out of power that doesn’t have a clear national leader.”

Here, I'll say it for you Cori Bush.

America doesn't need a House nigga.

Tom

Just vote for George Santos already. He's clearly the most qualified candidate: Nobel prize winner, an astronaut, veteran of 5 different wars, and the host of popular daytime talk show "Oprah".

Or so I've heard.

8th round is over, and despite the the new names today, the final vote tally for McCarthy remains the same as yesterday at 201.

The adjournment vote today might be interesting. Dems could have helped reject it yesterday if they all had been there voting.

It astounds me that so many Americans are unembarassed to identify as Republicans, with these types of clown shows going on in Washington.

On AM radio, one guy said it wasn't bad to be having a discussion and letting this work out. And I'm thinking, "what discussion?" Gaetz et al are seeking a blank check from McCarthy. Gaetz voted for Trump today in a succeeding effort to thumb the eye of McCarthy because he can. The guy is trolling the US House Speaker vote.

Seems like the never Kevin's have just a few demands.
1) Allow just one person to crash and burn legislation.
2) Allow just one person to fire the Speaker.
3) Don't allow GOP to fund "mainstream" candidates over populist madmen in gerrymandered districts

All great ideas, if they’re adopted and we live to get rid of these morons in 2024.

That last one is a very swampy deal since it involves an agreement with a fucking PAC.
