Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur said in an interview that she's open to voting for Rep. Kevin McCarthy for House speaker.

"I wish I could be part of some kind of a unity caucus that would yield him the votes."

"I'm a Democrat, but I have many Republicans in our district. And not that we would agree with him on everything, but at least let the man become speaker," Rep. Marcy Kaptur told a reporter.

Former Rep. Fred Upton, who has been floated as a potential bipartisan consensus choice for speaker, is not ruling out the proposition — even though the House has never picked a speaker who isn't also a member.

“I haven’t ruled that out,” Upton tells @NBCNews. “But we’re a long way from getting to that point.”
Upton says he still supports Rep. McCarthy but the deadlock "shows that you got real problems.”

Democratic Caucus Chair, Rep. Pete Aguilar, D-Calif., threw cold water on the idea of a pro-McCarthy Democratic compromise before the chamber's session.

"We would look at that, but I haven't seen any proof that Republicans are willing to engage," he told reporters at a press conference.

But some GOP members have raised the potential for negotiations.

Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., told CNN's Jim Sciutto that Republicans were already in "preliminary talks" with Democrats on a possible consensus candidate for House Speaker. Bacon reportedly mentioned possible concessions that could be made to Democrats, including skewing committee ratios more favorably for Democrats.

She said that there were reports of up to 20 anti-KMC rebels on the Republican side, and she expected a lot of negotiations in the last day or two before a vote.

Then about her conversations with Matt Gaetz and Paul Gosar. She said that the Democrats would be standing firm. She also said that there was not a proper race for Speaker with other R's challenging KMC. She then said that Jim Jordan doesn't want the job, something that seems to be correct about him.

She then gave these anti-KMC rebels some credit for wanting rules that would make the House more democratic, by diluting the Speaker's power. From there, she moved on to how it's important for the Democrats to be united against the Republicans, because a little bit of division in the R's' ranks can be used against them.

I don’t want them to use him that way. And I want him to understand: They’re only using you... don’t let them do that to you. Make them treat you with dignity and respect.”

She continued: “To hear Chip Roy stand up and say this is not about color ... it absolutely 100% is because if you were nominating him on his worth and merit, I think none of us would have been surprised because we would have seen him do leadership things.”

The congresswoman deflected conservative criticism of her remarks.

“I’m glad they took offense because it shows their lack of knowledge. It shows how ignorant they are. I need them to read up and understand what white supremacy is, what it looks like, and what the patriarchal system looks like,” Bush added.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich warned that the anti-McCarthy Republicans were “playing with fire.”

“This is the greatest danger we’ve had as a party since 1964,” Gingrich said in an interview, referring to the Republican National Convention that saw moderates facing off against conservative insurgents. The Republican base, he said, is "watching chaos in the House and they're watching the potential for a Never-Trump and an Always-Trump collision that could be devastatingly divisive.”

Referring to LBJ defeating Barry Goldwater, who was supported by right-wing activists.

“This is a disaster for the Republicans,” Fox News host Steve Doocy said Wednesday on “Fox & Friends.” Sean Hannity said Tuesday night that House Republicans “are now on the verge of becoming a total clown show if they’re not careful.”

“What I’m hearing from grassroots Republicans, donors, candidates and even federal elected officials is that there’s a significant leadership vacuum on the Republican side,” said Harmeet Dhillon, a California attorney who is challenging Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel to lead the party's organizing committee.

Much of the dysfunction plaguing the current-day GOP is linked to the party's embrace of Trump's slash-and-burn politics and the former president's weakened political standing. McCarthy exemplifies that model, having traveled to Mar-a-Lago in early 2021 to visit Trump after the Jan. 6 insurrection — a move that helped cement Trump's political resuscitation and was widely seen as part of an effort by McCarthy to bolster his speaker bid.
