there was a lot of noise made about giving the Panama Canal away, as I recall. Various high-ranking people were upset for various reasons... But there were also a number of high-ranking people pointing out the thing outlived it's strategic usefulness, what with the size of modern ships, and so on.

So nowhere near a collective opinion of presidential idiocy, but that's as close as I can recall.

I think it's more that they realize which way the wind is blowing and see no need to compromise either themselves or their departments by attempting to justify Trump's bullshit while under oath. When the dipshit flames out, they'll be able to stand back and say "Hey, we gave him the good advice but he just chose not to listen".

Stop it? You must be kidding. He HAS to keep it up. For one thing, his base counts on him to continually reassure them that he is a saint. But the biggie is the fact that he knows what he has done, and is barely sentient enough to know that he will eventually be called to account. That's when he can shout "I told you so!!", and offer his own indictment as proof that it is a witch hunt.
