Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez can't afford to live in DC

She can't afford to live in DC (while maintaining her NY residence) or she can't afford something she likes in DC?
She can't be the first newly elected representative of her means. But I guess she is the first one to whine about it. What do other people do?

Derec, she’s not whining about anything. She’s standing up for herself against a bunch of classist bigotry at the TrumpNetwork.

I’ve mentioned upthread what other people do. It’s an issue for non-millionaire legislators to find housing while maintaining a legal residence in the area they are representing. She needs housing now, BEFORE her salary kicks in, so that she can be up and ready to tend her duties from the beginning.

dC is a pretty expensive place to live.

So we should have sympathy for poor rural white folk who can't get jobs cause of dem illegal immigrants, but not her. Okay then.

Those poor "rural white folk" are not starting a job where they get paid $174k for not doing that much actual work.

Seriously, Derec, what do you know about how much actual work goes into being a legislator? And again, what the fuck is it that you do not understand about needing to move before the salary kicks in?

Or is it just that she’s female AND not white and earns more than you?

How did Fox find out about it anyway?

There are differently priced neighborhoods in DC, and she can get a small apartment - maybe even room with a fellow freshman. Median household income in DC is $75k, or $100k less than what she will be pulling in. So if they can find housing, I bet she can too.
Note that any bank would be happy to loan her $10k or two against her future salary for purposes of relocating. So I am quite skeptical that her problems are genuine, unless she has really high expectations of where she wants to live.

I know that most of the actual work is done by staffers. Most congresscritters don't even read the legislation they vote for or against.

Have you ever heard of banks?

Or is it just that she’s female AND not white and earns more than you?

Nope. It's that she whines about things that 1000s of freshmen congresscritters had to deal with before her. Of all genders and hues.
Speaking of hues, how come Z is considered "white" but somehow Occasional Cortez is not?

It is amazing what google reveals. It is an old article but revealing:

Meet The Lawmakers Who Sleep, Shower, Work — All On Capitol Hill

... snip ....

The most prominent member of this "Couch Caucus"? Newly minted House Speaker Paul Ryan, who's been sleeping in his office for years.

The Wisconsin Republican told CNN's Dana Bash in a recent interview that he would keep doing it even if he is, now, second in line to the presidency.

"I'm just a normal guy," Ryan said.

"But normal guys don't sleep in their offices!" Bash replied.

Maybe it's not normal, but there are no rules against it.

There's also no official data on how many do it. Lawmakers estimate, though, that at least 40 House members sleep in their offices.

So do you support minimum wage increases, then? Wage increases in general?

If I got pay like that of a Representative, I easily could afford two living locations. Her only problem is that the pay hasn't started coming in yet because she didn't actually plan on what to do if she won.

She'll fit right in.

Yes, why didn't she scuttle such fanciful notions of representing the people.

I didn't say she should scuttle any notions. Nice way to read in something that isn't even in the same neighborhood of what I wrote.

Straw men are easier to argue against.

It was sarcasm. Point being it is such a trivial thing to "plan if she actually won". She can live in her office as many do.

The planning opportunity also isn't even over yet so his claim makes no sense. She can plan now and make it work. The fact that her current wage does not cover the cost is more just a thing to say--to say, "hey look, I'm a regular person." She can go get a loan or sign onto a lease because the landlord will know she's a congress critter, same with a loan, if she even needed it. It's odd because I expect RWs like Jason and her critics to be capitalists and therefore understand all the opportunity that her new wealth will create but they seem more interested in superficial analysis and ideological claptrap. While I personally think she's awesome, there isn't a real problem here of any significant length of time.

Fake news. She never said she "couldn't afford" to live in DC.

Here is the quote from which the story is based on:

Ms. Ocasio-Cortez said the transition period will be “very unusual, because I can’t really take a salary. I have three months without a salary before I’m a member of Congress. So, how do I get an apartment? Those little things are very real.” She said she saved money before leaving her job at the restaurant, and planned accordingly with her partner. “We’re kind of just dealing with the logistics of it day by day, but I’ve really been just kind of squirreling away and then hoping that gets me to January.”

Yep.

The whiny crybabies seem to live at Trump Network or suck at their teat.

That's a real funny meme you posted. It's amazing how you can take the time to actually find a meme that you think supports your position--but not enough time to read enough to know what you are posting about.

Or maybe not actually...amazing.

I think she's more worried about where she'll sleep out of office hours.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wins the rigged conservative shame game — by refusing to play | Salon.com -- "Woman wears clothes, becomes butt of conservative journalist’s snark. Of course it’s not really about a jacket"
And even when Ocasio-Cortez does sign a lease on new D.C. digs, there's no winning their shame game, which is a barely-disguised excuse to act out what my colleague Amanda Marcotte, author of "Troll Nation," characterizes as the contemporary conservative's culture of resentment and hatred towards liberals. Ocasio-Cortez's apartment, even if it's utterly standard for a member of Congress, will either be “too nice,” mark her as a hypocrite and scam artist who just says what she needs to say to get that sweet taxpayer-funded check, or it will be too shabby, branding her as a loser in barely-coded terms that will saunter right up to the line of suggesting that such rundown housing is all she could know, poor dear.
But most recently,
Last night, a Washington Examiner reporter named Eddie Scarry tweeted out a photo of Ocasio-Cortez walking down a hallway — taken from behind, surveillance/creeper-style — with this off-brand Regina George caption: “Hill staffer sent me this pic of Ocasio-Cortez they took just now. I’ll tell you something: that jacket and coat don’t look like a girl who struggles.” (Cue Elle Woods' response to Vivian Kensington: Oh, I like your outfit too ...)

Scarry’s smarmy tweet got ratioed so hard he deleted it, then floated the hilariously disingenuous claim that he was just trying to compliment her, you guys!
She tweeted in response,
If I walked into Congress wearing a sack, they would laugh & take a picture of my backside.

If I walk in with my best sale-rack clothes, they laugh & take a picture of my backside.

Dark hates light - that’s why you tune it out.

Shine bright & keep it pushing.
