Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "I’m not on TikTok, but that won’t stop me from making bootleg ones for IG 😉" / Twitter
noting
Public Citizen on Twitter: "Very much here for @AOC’s bootleg TikTok. https://t.co/9we1EGtfLf" / Twitter
Its text:
How progressives would have handled the pandemic:

Encourage universal mask wearing ASAP. Make COVID testing & treatment free & widely available nationwide. Offer *CONTINUED, REGULAR* stimulus checks & expanded unemployment protection until spread is under control. Require guaranteed hazard pay & healthcare for ALL essential workers, incl. the undocumented (who pay taxes too!). Allow EVERYONE to enroll in Medicare. Offer rent cancellation & mortgage relief. Guarantee childcare & cancel student loans.

Did I make a bootleg TikTok for you all?
Yes.
Am I sorry? NO
(Tears of laughter emoji)

New York Times Opinion on Instagram: “History suggests there is a relatively simple way in which companies can help America get one step closer to that goal: Share their profits, says @rbreich, former secretary of Labor. #inequality #profitsharing #nytopinion” - "If Amazon's 840,000 employees owned the same proportion of their employer's stock as Sears workers did in the 1950s - a quarter of the company - each would now own shares worth an average of about $386,904." - Robert B. Reich

The Conscious Kid on Instagram: ““A name is more than just a name: It's one of the first things children recognize, one of the first words they learn to say, it's how the world identifies them. …” - "Please don't let people mispronounce your name. Correct them every time." -- Yis, g0ldenyis on Twitter

AOC herself: "Every time. Say your name ten times if you have to. Don't ever be embarrassed for having to repeat your name when meeting someone for the first time. Say it loud and proud! Own. Your. Name."

Firing Line | Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez | Season 2018 | PBS - AOC's recent entry into the Israel-Palestine issue reminds me of this interview not long after her first primary victory, where she was asked about having tweeted about a "massacre" of Palestinians by Israel. She was asked about what solution she wanted, and she fumbled and stumbled before conceding that she was not very expert on Middle Eastern politics. In the third 2020-primary debate, she was asked about what to do about the Israel-Palestine issue, and she addressed it mainly as a human-rights issue.

That was what AOC is arguing -- and what some other people argue. I concede that the plural of anecdote is not data, but it's hard for me to find good numbers on how many crimes committed by people in affluent neighborhoods are kept from the notice of the criminal justice system, how many criminals avoid what is presumably the justice that they ought to suffer. Like the likes of Brock Turner.

I think that it's far more likely that crimes in suburban areas are less due to less poverty, higher average ages in suburban areas, higher police/security to citizen ratios, and etc.

Another factor: The long term loss to a middle class person from being arrested/convicted is a lot higher than the loss to a poor person. People really do commit less crime.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez On The Future Of The Democratic Party | The View - YouTube - "I spent the last year and a half knocking doors just thinking about 8:59 PM on Tuesday. And I had no idea or preparation for anything that would happen after that. I just figured: I'm going to work as hard as I can and just leave it up to the Universe."

She recalls that nobody else was willing to challenge Joe Crowley. She also recalls city councilmembers and the like being afraid to be photographed near her. She claims that a lot of local politicians and the like would say to her in private that they want to support her but that they were afraid of risking their careers.

$6,000,000,000.00 - "Death to Squirrels" - About its author: "Iris Vander Pluym is an artist and activist in NYC (West Village), and an unapologetic, godless, feminist lefty. Raised to believe Nice Girls™ do not discuss politics, sex or religion, it turns out those are pretty much the only topics she ever wants to talk about. Also: squirrels."

AOC she called "my #1 girlcrush" - IVDP then described AOC's biggest opponent, MCC. She's pretty much a Wall Street Republican, with her 2010 book, her heavy Wall Street and Republican-lobby backing, and her husband being an investment banker and a big Republican donor.
... she told CNN “I am a real Democrat,” in contrast to AOC whom she calls a “Democratic socialist.” She added that the people of NY-14 “don’t want revolution.” LOL 4EVAH at that big, hearty 75% Bronx cheer: “FUCK YOU Michelle.”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez - Eclipse the Establishment 2017 Interview - YouTube - this was from 2017 Aug 21, on the day of that total solar eclipse, and it was part of an online broadcast that originally included some music like Pink Floyd's "Eclipse". The original was taken down because of copyright problems, but this one is without that troublesome music.

AOC's opponent, Joe Crowley, hadn't had a primary opponent in a long time, and she describes how a lot of local progressive groups were supporting her, as someone who was willing to run against him after all these years.

She also describes how New York's Board of Elections describes its party-registration deadline in a complicated and confusing way, without being very explicit about it. She calls it voter suppression, and something that not just Deep South states do.

JUSTICE DEMOCRAT ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ DEFEATS JOE CROWLEY - YouTube - video of her 2018 win as followed by Cenk Uygur and John Iadarola and Michael Shure of The Young Turks.

New York Primary Election Results - The New York Times for 98% (27,658 votes), New York's 14th Congressional District election, 2018 - Ballotpedia for final (29,778 votes). For anyone who likes to follow election nights, this is a very typical trajectory of vote pcts as a function of votes counted -- even very early in the count, the pcts are usually close to the final pcts.

AOC on "cancel culture":

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "People who are actually “cancelled” don’t get their thoughts published and amplified in major outlets.
This has been a public service announcement." / Twitter

then
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "The term “cancel culture” comes from entitlement - as though the person complaining has the right to a large, captive audience,& one is a victim if people choose to tune them out.
Odds are you’re not actually cancelled, you’re just being challenged, held accountable, or unliked." / Twitter

then
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "I have an entire TV network dedicated to stoking hatred of me. A white supremacist w/ a popular network show regularly distorts me in dangerous ways, & it’s a normal part of my existence to get death threats from their audience.
You don’t see me complaining abt “cancel culture”" / Twitter

then
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "Many of the people actually “cancelled” are those long denied a fair hearing of their ideas to begin w/:
Palestinian human rights advocates
Abolitionists
Anticapitalists
Anti-imperialists
Not spicy “contrarians” who want to play devils advocate w/ your basic rights in the NYT" / Twitter

I don't know what she was referring to. This article? Writers Warn in Open Letter Against Threat to Free Speech - The New York Times

Her first one got this response from Sam Harris (author of "The End of Faith", etc.):
Sam Harris on Twitter: "Concerns that false accusations of racism, misogyny, etc. can ruin a person's career = "entitlement"?" / Twitter

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if that Cortez woman is an admirer of Che Guevara, Fidel Castro, Maduro etc.

Trump supporters tried to cancel AOC for blowing 'covid bubbles' at a child but forgot one important thing | indy100 - she blew some soap bubbles at a campaign event. I remember doing that a lot as a kid. The kid was wearing a mask and AOC was a little over 6 ft / 2 m away (rough estimate).

Some right-wingers and Trumpies got all worked up over that.
.@RaheemKassam: @AOC is the Karen of wearing masks. Meanwhile, this weekend she's pulling her mask down in New York to blow bubbles in a child's face.

AOC did a virtual town-hall meeting last Thursday: NY-14 Virtual Town Hall with Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez - among her guests were family members of certain people killed by cops, like Eric Garner.

The Hill on Twitter: "Rep. @AOC: "Crime is a symptom of a diseased society that neglects its most marginalized people, and we do not solve that problem with police." https://t.co/IVki5Kenlo" / Twitter

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "Republicans are all upset that I’m connecting the dots between poverty and crime. ..." / Twitter
Republicans are all upset that I’m connecting the dots between poverty and crime.

I know most of them haven’t experienced or seen these issues first hand, but I have.

This may be hard for them to admit, but poverty and crime are highly linked, both violent & nonviolent alike.

Let me give you a real life example that I’ve encountered often (wording vaguely to protect people).

Growing up I was friends w/ a boy who was the son of a single mom. They struggled to pay rent.

As we know, hourly work doesn’t pay a living wage - especially then. /2

It’s virtually impossible to pay rent on $8/hr.

And when you are teenage boy in a fatherless home (his dad passed away), there is a drive to be “the man of the house.” To help your mom.

And what makes money fast when a full time job doesn’t pay enough to live? Selling weed. /3

For Black & Brown communities, especially in the era of criminalization, the choice to sell weed of course is a risky one - not just w/ police, but with those you get tied up with.

Yet when a teenage boy believes the other option is homelessness, they may take the chance. /4

Mind you, there are entire TV series glamorizing, humanizing, and sympathizing White Americans in this exact situation of selling drugs to live - Weeds, Breaking Bad, etc.

But fact is, Black & Brown communities have been in this predicament forever & get called “animals.” /5

I take this issue seriously. Unlike many of GOP pundits theorizing from suburban homes, I’ve had multiple family members shot, shot at, stabbed, etc.

Crime + community violence isn’t some thought experiment to project your thoughts & theories abt communities you’ve never met. /6

It’s our real life.

While it takes months, sometimes years to study crime data, I personally can tell you that fed & state relief is NOT reaching people.

We aren’t getting stimulus checks (mixed status fams), millions can’t pay rent, & summer youth employment has been cut. /7

What AOC posted is a great argument for ending drug warring. A lot of crime would stop because of not doing that. Looking at the comments, I can't help but snicker at the right-wingers who looked down on selling marijuana, when they should have celebrated doing so as proudly being capitalist and defying government regulation.

Dana Loesch on Twitter: "Crime is up because you and others pushed for a reduction in both policing and penalities. Also, whenever you want to talk about poverty, I’m happy to tell you about how hard it was for my single mom and me when I was growing up — and it wasn’t in tony *Westchester.*" / Twitter
then
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "None of these policing reductions have even *happened yet.* ...." / Twitter
None of these policing reductions have even *happened yet.*

So a spike is happening WITH a $6 billion dollar NYPD budget.

You either know this & are intentionally lying, or you‘re a bad spokeswoman & haven’t verified your claims.

Given your work with @NRA it’s probably both.

It’s not as though a vote happens and the full sum of money disappears the next day. That not how it works.

People who study crime know that (despite how many pundits pretend otherwise), *causes of crime are complex* and there are few neat and tidy causal relationships.
Seems like AOC actually did the research.

When I first saw AOC's platform late in 2018, I was a bit surprised that there wasn't anything about labor unions in it. But she has been making up for that ever since.

AOC’s Campaign Staff Just Ratified a Union Contract
As part of the contract, Ocasio-Cortez campaign staff secured a salary floor of at least $4,000 per month, an $18 minimum wage for hourly employees, and a number of paid leave policies. Notably, the contract caps salaries for managers, making it so that the highest paid employee of her campaign is paid at a rate no more than three times the rate of the lowest paid full-time employee. Putting a salary limit on managers is still uncommon, but staffers for Bernie Sanders’s 2020 presidential campaign locked down a similar provision in their contract earlier this year.

...
The deal also includes paid time off to vote in any election, at least 12 weeks of paid parental leave, an upcoming bonus, a fund to help underwrite classes to help with professional development, and stipends to cover remote work-related expenses and even child care.

Though the union didn’t provide the full contract, excerpts shared with The Intercept show entire sections dedicated to robust anti-discrimination policies and to fighting the exploitative working conditions that often develop in political campaigns, which can be grueling. And as one of the more progressive Democrats in Congress, the unionization of Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign staff is also about the political messaging in the contract, and the lawmaker practicing the same policies she promotes. Members of the bargaining committee told The Intercept that they hope their contract inspires other campaigns to fight for these protections, though they ultimately want these rights to be universal and extended to every worker.
aída chávez on Twitter: "NEW: @AOC’s campaign workers just ratified a union contract (link to article) by me" / Twitter

AOC responded:
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "From living wages to parental leave, it’s always been impt to me that wherever possible, my campaign walks the walk. ..." / Twitter
From living wages to parental leave, it’s always been impt to me that wherever possible, my campaign walks the walk.

I’m proud to say that Team AOC is a union shop!

Some deets:
- $18/hr min
- Overtime
- Childcare benefit
- Healthcare
- Paid leave
- Immigrant & Trans protections

This whole process was really eye-opening & I learned a lot!

As a nonprofit employee & a waitress, I always worked in right-to-work places. Seeing the power of a union up close was inspiring.

I also gained insight into anti-union arguments, which is helpful for countering them.

For example, I have heard employers say “we already offer great benefits, why bother unionizing?”

We offered great benefits too - many of which were ratified in our contract!

A union can also:
a) Protect these benefits, &/or
b) Establish impt non-monetary rights & protections
Curious that she was willing to go along with that unionization. It seems almost too good to be true.

I understand this will of course be ignored as the report is from an alt right source. But I'd love to see any rebuttals, or where it's not fact!

https://gellerreport.com/2020/07/th...onated-270000-meals-during-the-pandemic.html/

The guy in charge behaved in a fashion many find disgusting. They don't want to deal with his company and are publicizing why. This is nothing compared to the conservatives calling for a boycott of Keurig for the horrible offense of pulling advertising from Hannity's show.

Eh, it's soap, so probably helped protect kid.

angelo, what do you find hard to believe? That Trump is something other than some Hero of Capitalist Labor?

Ayanna Pressley on Black Lives Matter, 2020 Election, Having Alopecia - Rolling Stone
The day her hair finished falling out, due to an alopecia diagnosis she’d gotten just weeks before, was also the anniversary of her mother’s death. “I was missing her. I was mourning my hair. I was mourning the state of our democracy,” Pressley told The Root in her official January revelation. “I was mourning my mentor, Chairman Elijah Cummings,” who had recently passed away.

...
More than a year ago, Pressley introduced the People’s Justice Guarantee, a resolution laying out many of the principles now being talked about in city halls across the country in the wake of the Black Lives Matter protests: decriminalizing nonviolent offenses, shifting money to community-led public-health and safety initiatives rather than punitive policing. And since the uprising, Pressley has put forth a series of bills and resolutions calling for reforms to policing, criminal justice, transit, and other areas where under-served communities are being discriminated against. “You believe black lives matter? So legislate like it. Invest like it,” she tells Rolling Stone. “This is the moment. This is the reckoning. I don’t see this waning. I really don’t.”

No. I find it hard to believe that the sheeples would vote for the air head twice! But seeing where she's from, and her constituents, it's no surprise at all.
