Anita Sarkeesian: Lingerie != Armor

Some of us men would rather look like Brad Pitt than Conan.

Sorry, didn't mean to exclude gay or bisexual men from my comments. They are also excluded from the current paradigm, of course.

I love MMORPGs, but they're some of the worst when it comes to lingerie armor, and stuff like the image above always bugged me to no end.
I'm glad I don't like MMORPGs, because that armour is really stupid and I would not play a female character that looks so comical. Full-plate-Bieber looks ridiculous too, but in a different way.

I don't understand the tastes of MMO players, but I don't need them to conform to mine--live and let live.

Only gay or bi men would rather look like Brad Pitt?

Apparently. Since it's been proven that manliness is defined by a Conan body, then any man who doesn't want a Conan body must therefore be gay, because being gay is not being a man. Don't you understand the logic here?

I've never sucked a dick but I guess it's never too late to start.

Reality is boring, routine and dangerous for most people for most of the time.
1000 years ago we were too busy trying to survive. Fantasy was only possible in dreams. Leisure time was only for the rich and famous.
So, as amazingly intelligent modern humans with spare time, we create fantasy. Film, music, games, etc. We use drugs to enhance fantasy. We lust for fantasy because it feels better than reality. We participate in fantasy for amusement and pleasure and to combat reality.
Why do we then have to ask the question: Should we modify the content of our fantasies for the sake of those offended by that content?
NO NO NO. Why would we want to? We made it all up. It's NOT real. Which is why it exists. It can never be real and we shouldn't want it to be.
In the free market of fantasy, there are thousands of ways of getting your fantasy fix. Soft core, hard core, anything you want. It's all out there and waiting for us.
Fantasy is basically free thought. Anything you want to think up, you can turn into fantasy in your own mind or create a product that shares with others.
I am wary of those who want to censor free thought because some fantasies scare them. The belief that fantasy should be reigned in, back to more realistic portrayals is ridiculous. If you remove all material that might be objectionable to any who see, then you have destroyed the concept of fantasy and returned to the dreaded reality.

The problems arise when some try to mix the two. If you want to be a vampire in your fantasy, it doesn't turn out well if you bite a strangers neck and try to suck blood.
And when fantasy addicts bring their desires back to reality, it only feeds those that criticize the details of the fantasy.
When the violent rape fantasy moves out of a staged porn movie and into reality, it destroys everything, creates "real" victims and criminals, etc. And then the fantasy destroyers use that as proof positive that fantasies are bad.
"See, we told you. If you make all this disgusting porn, people will just do it in real life." Don't they always say that... but we know that the violent rapist would still have his own personal fantasy in his head and commit the crime, even if there were absolutely no "material" available. Violent rape was here long, long before movies, games and music were invented.
So please, have and participate in any fantasy you choose. Just don't think that after the Star Trek convention, that you are Spock and you can do the Vulcan Mind Meld on your friends..YOU CAN'T.

Also, I'm kind of bummed she didn't mention Mirror's Edge in her positive examples. The female characters in that game just wear practical running outfits, just like the men do. Both the male and female characters are wearing outfits not all that different from what you might find on joggers in any city.
why would she mention that? her whole schtick is manufacturing outrage at an imaginary conspiracy of sexual enslavement, it doesn't fit her narrative to acknowledge that the vast majority of games that exist don't fit that.
She does mention things that she finds positive. Haven't you noticed?

I really like how Star Wars: the Old Republic did it. You could have complete control over what your character looks like no matter how many upgrades you get, and I was able to make my Jedi character look like, well, a traditional Jedi in a robe instead of a stupid Halo character in space armor, which is what most of the high end drops looked like.

No, the anti-woman crowd is usually too busy getting their panties in a wad to notice such things.

She raises perfectly valid points, so they have to exaggerate her claims and ignore her own caveats in order to convince themselves that she is the one being unreasonable. It's just typical MRA-whining.

Come to think of it, Diablo III has a similar system: any armour piece can be modified to look like any other. I've made use of it a couple of times to alter silly-looking helms or to keep a particularly cool-looking pauldron design. I suppose you could put this mechanism in almost any MMO and please the Fanservice crowd plus the...normal people.

That was one of the great things about City of Heroes. Huge number of options for appearance, and just about all of them available from the start. Upgrades did not affect appearance, and there were special options that could be unlocked by certain missions. (capes at lvl 20 for example) They even let you have multiple costume slots that you could switch between, and near the end added the option of transformation sequence when you switched.

Works for me. More options to suit more tastes. Options for more modest armor for those who desire it, while skimpier options for those who would prefer more revealing clothing.

So you're saying, anyone who disagrees with Sarkeesian is anti-woman? Anyone who disagrees is just "whining"? Can you get off your high horse for once? This is the same kind of stupidity that leads Christians to say "anyone who disagrees with us must be Satanic".

When one's arguments are all regurgitations the only way to deal with a challenge is to lash out with blanket accusations of misogyny and schoolyard-level antihomosexual slurs.

You go to war with the army you have.

Also doesn't the phrase "panties in a wad" promote gender stereotypes? :D

DDO has this for any piece of equipment, not just armor. It's a microtransaction, though, not free. You also have to have the item you want it to look like--you don't choose the look, you transform item A to look like item B. (B must fit the same slot as A, it must be in your inventory and you can only do it to items that have an appearance--not everything does.) I have no idea how it handles male/female armor rendering, though.
