Florida authorities detained a U.S.-born citizen on the charge of entering the state as an “unauthorized alien,” forcing him to spend more than 24 hours in a county jail on an immigration hold, despite the man having proof of his citizenship through his birth certificate and social security card, his attorney and an advocacy group said Friday.
Juan Carlos Lopez-Gomez, 20, was arrested by Florida Highway Patrol on Wednesday when a trooper pulled over the car he was a passenger in for speeding, his attorney, Mutaqee Akbar, told The Washington Post.
