No reason for them to be there? It is/was their only warm water port. Those ships now have no where to go but Kaliningrad. Those bases were a staging area for their African shenanigans. Is Putin a loser in Trump's eyes now? This weakens Russia's hand in Africa. They are expending so much of their resources in Ukraine. Their dreams of projecting power are imploding.

Syrian state institutions will be supervised by former Prime Minister Mohammed Jalali until they are handed over, rebel leader Abu Mohammed al-Golani said on Sunday.
It signals efforts to secure an orderly transition.
Signed in his real name - Ahmed al-Sharaa - Golani's statement banned military forces in Damascus from approaching public bodies.
It also prohibited the firing of guns in the air.
In an interview with Al Arabiya, Jalali - appointed prime minister by Assad in September - said he had been in contact with Sharaa to discuss managing the current transitional period.
He said Syria should hold free elections.
Jalali said he remained in his home and was ready to support continuity of governance.
Syrian telecommunications minister Eyad al-Khatib, in an interview with Al Arabiya, said he had been contacted by a representative of Sharaa's Hayat Tahrir al-Sham responsible for telecoms services.
They agreed that telecoms and internet would continue to function, Khatib said.

Anyway, seems Israel's destruction of Hezbollah in Lebanon has weakened support of Assad and his general incompetence too, played the role. Russia put a lot of money into that airbase which have to be abandoned now.
Good job Israel and Turkey.

Good riddance to rubbish.
A terrible shame it did not happen years ago esp. when Assad's father was in power.
Hopefully the Syrians will get more say in their own futures.

Look on a the bright side Barbos.
In anaother thread you said that S400 systems were in great demand and had a waiting list. The waiting list is now shorter.

Syria was not on the list. In any case, Russian monetary losses are not even close to yours in Afghanistan

His flight path was odd, he first headed east towards the Iraqi border and then west towards the coast before making a u turn and then disappearing from radar near Homs. If he descended from radar altitude, he could have been shot down easier from rebels in the area. Not sure what is going on.
