The illegal mass migrants are not being 'imprisoned' in any gulags. They are being housed - for free, mind you! - in offshore camps. They are free to go home where they belong anytime they want. The problem is that they want to enter Australia.
I guess this Patrick Stokes fellow supports unlimited mass migration from places like Afghanistan and Pakistan. I think this is a far better strategy:

They are being 'housed' in conditions that are driving them to kill themselves, rather than endure them any longer. Does that sound to you like the behaviour of people who are free to go anywhere else?
Perhaps they are just committing suicide to make the right wing look bad. That's just the kind of sneaky trick they would pull, right?

I would suggest the same way they got there. They managed to get there in the first place, so why can't they go back the same way?
Ok, ok, maybe Australia can pay for charter flights back to Kabul or Islamabad. Is that a good compromise?
So what is your solution? Just let them all in? That would lead to many new migrants leaving their countries to take advantage of the changed policies.
Same as what happened in Europe. For example Afghans started flooding toward Europe not in the 1990s when there was a civil war in the country, and not in 2002 when US invaded, but in 2015 when Merkel open the floodgates to unrestricted migration.
It's not just about the people currently in these camps. It's about deterrence, and about the message being sent to millions of potential migrants that the borders are open again.
I don't know why they commit suicide. Maybe they are just nuts. Better they kill themselves on Nauru then go on stabbing sprees in Australian cities like many Afghans are doing across Europe. Btw, there was one Afghan that got deported from Germany that killed himself back home in Kabul. I guess to you that means that Germany should not be deporting any Afghans.

2. In Europe they charter planes for deportees. Australia could do the same. Charter a few planes to Kabul and Islamabad and wherever else these people are from.

Why are they having children in the first place if conditions are that bad?
Medical cases should not have been ignored. However, the solution is not to let all these mass migrants in. The success of the Australian policy is that by blocking boats they removed the incentives for migrants to come and they stopped coming. Europe did the opposite. They allowed so-called NGOs (really migrant smugglers) to pick up migrants 12 miles off the coasts of Tunisia and Libya and bring them all to European ports. Of course, that fuels more and more migration because the word spreads. If they were brought back to where they took off from the word of futility of these crossings would spread too and they would cease.
I do not think people should be mistreated - it would be best to just send them back home - but I do not think Australia nor any other country should create a pull factor for mass migration either.

Sure. You can ask the federal government why they haven't done that, if it's so easy.
Perhaps it only looks easy to someone who hasn't bothered to find out what the real situation is, because his bigotry is sufficient basis for determining the best solution to every problem. Perhaps reality isn't that simple.
