Australian Deputy Prime Minister ruled ineligible to sit in parliament by High Court

wait, what? Who has been sacked or resigned? Fraser Anning?

Yes; Apparently he has quit the One Nation Party. Which was the only thing that got him elected in the first place.

OK, I see. He quit his political party but not his position as Senator.

So is this good or bad?

And... 19 votes? Yikes. That's some mandate... not

It’s unclear if he quit or was kicked out. Apparently he wasn’t allowed into party rooms this morning and when he did gain admission, he was abused so he left.

And this comes only days after Pauline Hansen found out one of her candidates not only owns an adult shop, but apparently has a website that promotes kinky sexual stuff that isn’t ‘domestic violence’!

*shakes head in disbelief.

Well, anything that weakens the One Nation Party has to be a good thing (particularly with the Queensland state election only a couple of weeks away, on 24 November).

But it is quite astonishing that 19 personal votes plus the support of a party you instantly separate from, can make you a senator. If I had known it was that easy, I would have done it myself - I reckon I could persuade 20 or even 21 people to vote for me...

Crickey, our family here alone would be 10! No, wait - 9! My idiot middle brother can’t, and won’t make himself available, to vote!

LOL even if he took up citizenship, he wouldn't vote for me. We have a couple of fundamental political differences - most importantly on the subject of whether hemp is a universal solution to every possible problem.

True!

It gets worse - or better, for those of us rolling on the floor laughing - Now two notoriously anti-immigration, personality cultist senators, Jacqui Lambie, eponymous leader of the Jacqui Lambie Network, and Pauline Hanson, eponymous leader of Pauline Hanson's One Nation Party, are being accused of unlawfully holding dual citzenship (Lambie's father was born in Scotland, and Hanson's parents were from the UK and Ireland).

There are questions being asked about a number of other government senators and representatives, including the President of the Senate, Steven Parry, who has resigned after admitting his British citizenship after the High Court ruling was handed down.

There's a real possibility that the Prime Minister might be forced to call a snap election before Christmas - an election that his coalition would almost certainly lose. If he doesn't, then it is quite possible that he will be left without a workable majority in the House of Representatives, and will be forced into an early election on the opposition's terms.

Right now, the Government are in crisis talks with the opposition regarding an audit of the citizenships of all parliamentarians; If that goes ahead, I reckon we can expect to see quite a few more Senators and Representatives disqualified or forced to resign.

This has been brewing for decades - when I was more deeply involved in politics back in the 1990s, it was quietly discussed that the ALP might try to 'out' a number of suspected Liberal and National party dual-citizens sitting in federal parliament in breach of s44, but at that time there was some concern that some of our own party members could be caught up in the scandal. So far, the ALP seems to have been immune, perhaps because of their tighter vetting processes for candidates standing for federal office.

That the latest senators caught up in this debacle are rabidly anti-immigrant, hyper nationalist types is just about the funniest thing ever.

And Jacqui Lambie is GONE.

There is a theory that says that homophobes are mostly secretly gay themselves; It appears that, in a similar vein, our anti-immigration politicians are mostly dual citizens.

Times like this I wonder if there is a wise and benevolent god. The irony on Lambie getting the flick this way is borderline divine.

I'm hanging out for Hanson's dual citizenship to come to light - certainly back in 2010, when One Neuron were imploding, she claimed that she was going to emigrate to the UK where she was eligible for dual nationality - if true, then that strongly suggests that she is not eligible to sit.

I need to start adding popcorn to my weekly shopping list. Though I'm a bit worried now Fundamentalists First might have a resurgence to fill in the gap this shitstorm has created.

So now the High court has ruled that dumped National Party senator Fiona Nash's expected replacement, which on countback was determined to be Liberal candidate, Holly Hughes, is also ineligible - in Ms Hughes case, because she took a job on the Administrative Appeals Tribunal after her unsuccessful run for a senate seat. Members of this tribunal are ineligible to stand for parliament due to conflict of interest provisions in the constitution; Ms Hughes resigned from the AAT just 45 minutes after Ms Nash was ruled ineligible by the court.

Jeez, what a clusterfuck.
