There are aftermarket anti-theft devices but shit, the manufacturers should provide some kind of protection. Elon Musk has done a good job, you never hear of Tesla catalytic converters being stolen.

That's fine for those with the means but what of all the low wage workers depending upon their vehicle to get to work? A new catalytic converter will set a person back as much as $2k or whatever insurance deductible they might have. Many poorer folks may not even have coverage for such.
Most every vehicle on the road has one or two catalytic converters. They are part of the exhaust between the engine and muffler(s). A vehicle can hardly be run without a catalytic converter. The exhaust would be so loud, a person wouldn't make it past the first cop.

I think the government needs to stop subsidizing ICE and fossil fuel industries and spend all that money and suspend all defense development contracts for ICE and other fuel based military projects and spend that money on getting the country off gasoline and into electrics.

It's time for buy-backs of ICE vehicles and EV vouchers.

So, just saying, maybe regulate the auto industry and require retrofit to protect such valuable components, or to exchange existing vehicles for electrics? Both of you, really.

It's time to start telling austerity to get fucked. We have the resources and the people to make a lot of cool shit happen and we waste it all on junk forced on us because we are "poor" and chasing the lowest common denominator to allow our wealthy to walk all over us and live lavishly.

We need some taxes up in this bitch, and to see the economy pushed towards things that actually make life better.

Two problems:

1) A lot of the cars predate the wave of cat thefts.

2) It's very hard to adequately secure them without causing other problems. Cats rely on airflow for cooling, wrap them up too much and they'll get too hot. (Basically, a cat "burns" the unburned fuel without needing a combustible mix. That combustion energy shows up in the cat and can only be disposed of into the exhaust or out the sides.)

Knowing how our CA politicians seem to care more for criminals more than their victims, we should just be thankful that they aren't making laws mandating vehicle changes to make it EASIER for thieves to steal the CCs. An "extremely dangerous and violent criminal" who had escaped from custody multiple times has been captured again in Mexico, the Orange County District Attorney's Office announced Wednesday. Ike Nicholas Souzer, 20, escaped from a halfway house in Santa Ana last week, where he had been transported after a release from jail on probation. Souzer's criminal history includes the killing of his own mother, attacking correctional officers and two prior escapes from custody.
Souzer had been brought to the halfway house after serving a 90-day sentence for vandalism after he was caught spray-painting a freeway underpass. But the DA's office says it has fought repeatedly for harsher sentences over the years for Souzer's multiple offenses given his criminal history. At age 13, Souzer fatally stabbed his own mother and was later convicted of voluntary manslaughter. While on trial for that case, he escaped from juvenile hall in 2019, but was arrested the next day at a McDonald's in Anaheim. While in custody, he was convicted in December 2021 of attacking three correctional officers. He was convicted in 2023 of making and possessing a shank while in jail. Prosecutors sought a three-year sentence on that case but he was sentenced to one year in custody and two years of supervised release. He was free in three months on credit for good behavior and work time, and then was arrested days later on the vandalism charge.
